There is no verified single fix for multiplayer lag in Ale & Tale Tavern. First work out whether the symptom is low FPS, network delay, or a slowdown tied to one world: graphics changes will not fix rubber-banding, and router changes will not fix choppy rendering. Start by updating every player’s game, restarting the session, swapping the host, and comparing the affected save with a temporary new world.
Identify what kind of lag you have
Use the symptom and first test to choose the right troubleshooting path. “Lag” alone does not show whether the problem is rendering, networking, or the game’s simulation.
| What you notice | Likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| The game looks choppy on both PCs | Graphics or simulation load | Lower graphics settings and compare performance. |
| Only one player’s screen stutters | That PC’s performance, drivers, overlays, or connection | Test solo play on the affected PC. |
| Players teleport, or actions arrive late, while local movement looks smooth | Network or host connection | Swap hosts and test with Ethernet. |
| Menus are smooth but the playable world slows down | Gameplay rendering, simulation, or save state | Try a temporary new world. |
| Lag starts after loading an older save | Save-specific or patch interaction | Preserve the save and compare it with a new world. |
| The game freezes while joining, creating, or loading a tavern | Possible game bug, damaged files, or compatibility issue | Verify files and record the steps that reproduce the freeze. |
| Performance worsens around many characters or customers | Possible rendering or simulation load | Reduce effects, shadows, view distance, and resolution. |
Community discussions include reports of FPS drops when more characters are present and slowdown in gameplay while menus remain responsive; these are player reports, not proof of a single cause (Steam community discussions).
Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Update every player’s game
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Ale & Tale Tavern and choose Properties.
- Open Updates and make sure Steam is allowed to update the game.
- Let updates finish, confirm all players are on the same build, then restart Steam.
The official update feed surfaced patches through version 1.6.9, dated June 26, 2026. Updates have fixed assorted stability, controller, gameplay, and multiplayer-adjacent bugs, but the surfaced notes do not establish a universal multiplayer-lag fix. Check the official Steam update history for later notes and the full Steam news history before troubleshooting an issue that began after an update.

2. Restart the complete session
Have everyone exit to the desktop, close Steam completely, reopen it, and recreate the lobby. Restart the PCs too if they have been running the game for a long session. This is a simple reset, not a confirmed game-specific cure.
3. Verify the game files
- In Steam Library, right-click Ale & Tale Tavern.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish.
- Restart Steam and test the session again.
Verification can repair missing or damaged local files; it does not establish that the game’s multiplayer code is faulty.

| Operating system | Windows 10 x64 | Not stated in the Steam listing. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4440 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 | Intel Core i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |

| Network | Broadband internet connection | Not stated in the Steam listing. |
| Storage | 7 GB available space | 7 GB available space |
These specifications come from the Steam store listing. Meeting the minimum is not a guarantee of steady performance in every multiplayer situation: the relatively high listed minimum GPU and RAM, together with player reports of slowdowns as characters increase, make system load worth checking. That is an inference, not an official diagnosis.
Reduce rendering load in a controlled order
- Lower resolution or render scale first.
- Reduce shadows and view distance, followed by effects, foliage, lighting, and post-processing.
- Disable optional effects such as bloom if the game’s settings offer them.
- Cap FPS at a value the PC can sustain instead of pursuing an unstable maximum.
- Compare fullscreen and borderless mode. Temporarily toggle V-Sync to test for stutter, then restore it if screen tearing is distracting.
One player has reported improvement after disabling bloom, while other community posts discuss FPS and V-Sync problems. Treat those settings as experiments rather than guaranteed fixes (Steam community page; Steam discussions).

Check load and drivers
During a slowdown, note whether CPU or GPU usage rises, whether temperatures become unusually high, and whether the issue starts after a consistent amount of play. A slowdown after 20–30 minutes is useful evidence to report, but it does not by itself prove a memory leak. Install a current stable driver for the relevant NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU and restart. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, record the version and consider comparing with the previous stable driver rather than assuming the newest one is best. Install pending Windows updates if the system is substantially behind.

Swap the host to isolate the bottleneck
The Steam listing advertises online co-op for up to six players, but does not promise that a full group will perform well on minimum hardware. Test the same players in a new session with the usual client hosting, then with the usual host joining instead.

- If everyone improves with a different host, investigate the original host’s system load, upload connection, Wi-Fi stability, and background traffic.
- If one client remains affected regardless of host, investigate that player’s PC, drivers, overlays, and connection.
- If the problem is limited to one world, focus on its save or simulation state.
Test Ethernet and reduce competing traffic
For a diagnostic run, connect the host and affected player to the router by Ethernet if practical. Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, streaming, VPNs, and other high-bandwidth activity. Steam specifies only a broadband connection; it publishes no game-specific speed or ping threshold. Raw download speed alone cannot establish whether a connection is suitable: latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, bufferbloat, and host processing can also matter (Steam store listing).
Check whether the world or save is the trigger
Do not delete an existing save as an early troubleshooting step. Back it up, create a temporary new world, invite the same players, and compare performance after a similar amount of play. Then reload the original world. Note whether the slowdown begins on loading, after a particular event, or as characters and activity accumulate.
A December 2024 community report described severe in-world lag in an established save while a new world initially worked normally; the poster later said a subsequent patch appeared to resolve it. That single report supports testing worlds separately, not assuming that all lag is caused by a corrupted save (Steam community report).
If the game freezes or crashes
A freeze or crash is different from low FPS or network delay, even if players call it lag. First verify files using the Steam steps above, update or compare graphics drivers, and temporarily disable overlays. Record whether it happens while hosting, joining, creating a tavern, or loading a particular save; also note whether the same action works in a new world. A community report describes a join/create freeze and a developer request to use the bug-report guide, so report repeatable steps rather than assuming a general connection problem (Steam discussion).

Report a reproducible problem
Steam’s technical support page lists [email protected] as the support contact and names Scienart Games as developer (Steam technical support page). Include enough detail to distinguish a PC, connection, host, and world issue:
Quick Recap
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics driver version.
- Game version/build, number of players, and whether you were host or client.
- Whether the problem occurs solo, in a new world, or only in an existing save.
- Whether all players are affected, and whether the world looks choppy or actions are delayed.
- Exact reproduction steps, approximate time before the issue starts, and any recent game or driver update.
- Screenshots or video; provide a backed-up save only if the developer requests it.
