Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has received patches that address a PlayStation saving failure and improve console performance, but the available evidence does not show that every PS5 crash is fixed. If you’re affected, update the game, protect your saves, then work through PlayStation’s troubleshooting steps from least to most disruptive.
Is Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon fixed on PS5?
Not completely, based on the available evidence. The game has received substantial fixes, including a targeted PlayStation save-system fix, but that is not the same as a verified fix for every crash, freeze, or loading hang. Players continued to report occasional PS5 crashes in 2026; those accounts are anecdotal, not proof that all players share the same reproducible bug.
What the patches addressed
- Version 1.16, January 2026: The developer reported optimization work and a 3–5 FPS improvement on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This was a performance improvement, not a promise that crashes were eliminated. Read the developer’s version 1.16 update.
- Version 1.20, March 3, 2026: The notes describe a fix for a PlayStation “saving failed” problem associated with exploring almost all scenes, along with 40 FPS support on consoles. They do not claim that the patch fixed every type of crash. The notes recommend pairing 40 FPS with VSync when the display supports it; this is a performance option, not a confirmed crash remedy. Read the version 1.20 notes.
- Later 1.23-series hotfix announcements: The linked announcements confirm additional hotfix coverage, but their available details do not establish a comprehensive PS5 crash fix. Check the current in-game notes or the announcements for their full text: version 1.23a announcement and mini-hotfix announcement.
Because a specific current PS5 build number is not established here, check the version shown on your own console rather than relying on a number that may have changed.
Protect your saves before troubleshooting
The PS5 listing describes the game as supporting manual saves, so make a fresh manual save in a separate slot when possible. - If you have PlayStation Plus cloud storage, confirm the save has synchronized before making changes. Check that the cloud copy is the version you intend to keep before downloading or overwriting data.
- Do not delete saved data as an early troubleshooting step. Reinstalling the game and deleting its saved data are separate actions; deleting the latter can remove your progress.
- If you suspect one save is affected, preserve it and test a new save separately rather than overwriting the only copy.
Try these PS5 fixes in order
These are general PlayStation game-launch troubleshooting steps, not all confirmed Tainted Grail-specific crash fixes. Start at the top; stop once the problem is resolved.
- Update the game. Highlight Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon on the PS5 home screen, press Options, select Check for Update, and install any available update. Note the displayed game version for your records, then restart the console.
- Update PS5 system software. Open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings and install an available update.
- Restart the console. Press the PS button, choose Power → Restart PS5. A normal restart does not delete saves.
- Move the game to internal storage if it is on USB extended storage. Open Settings → Storage, move the game to the PS5’s internal SSD, and test again. PlayStation specifically recommends this for games that will not start; it is especially relevant to launch and loading failures.
- Restore licenses if the issue looks like an access problem. Go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses. This is relevant if the game is padlocked or will not launch after an account or console-sharing change; it is not a confirmed fix for a repeatable in-game crash.

Advanced steps: Safe Mode, reinstalling, and save testing
Clear the cache or rebuild the database
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database in Safe Mode, then select the rebuild-database option if needed.
These Safe Mode maintenance options are not the same as resetting the PS5. They are not expected to delete installed games or personal data in normal use, but do not interrupt the process. PlayStation recommends cache clearing and database rebuilding for persistent game-start problems; neither is a confirmed title-specific cure.
Reinstall the game without deleting its save
Try this only after protecting your save. Confirm any cloud copy has synchronized, and do not delete saved data. Then highlight the game, press Options, select Delete, and download and reinstall it. If practical, test the base game before reinstalling optional DLC so you can tell whether the add-on changes the result.

Compare a new save with the affected save
- Start the game after reinstalling and create a separate test save.
- Play until you can determine whether the issue recurs.
- Load the older save separately and compare the result.
- Note whether both saves crash, only one save crashes, or the problem is tied to a location, loading transition, autosave, or DLC area.
If only one save fails, that points toward a save-specific or location-specific problem, but does not prove the save is damaged. Keep the original intact and include the comparison in a support report.
Choose the next step based on when it crashes
During autosave or after a “saving failed” warning
First verify that the game is updated: version 1.20 specifically addressed a PlayStation saving-failed issue related to extensive scene exploration. Make a separate manual save if you can do so safely. A crash at this point could still involve a particular save, location, installation, or another bug; do not respond by deleting all saves.
While loading or immediately after launch
Prioritize the update, system software, full restart, internal-storage test, and license check. If those do not help, use Safe Mode maintenance and then consider reinstalling the game while leaving saved data alone. A title that fails before reaching gameplay may have an installation, storage, or license problem rather than the same cause as a crash after a long session.
In one location or the Sanctuary of Sarras DLC
Record the region, nearby quest or landmark, and whether the failure happens when loading, using a portal, interacting with something, or autosaving. One 2026 player report described repeated crashes near portals in the Sanctuary of Sarras and suggested reducing the number of saved files. That is an unverified player experiment, not an official fix. If you choose to test save-count changes, back up first and do not remove your only usable save. Read the player report.

After a long session
Try restarting the game periodically and keeping manual saves in separate slots. You can also test a supported 40 FPS/VSync configuration if your display supports it, but the version 1.20 notes present that as a console performance option, not a guaranteed way to prevent crashes.
Only one save crashes
Keep that save untouched and compare it with a new test save. If the new save works, tell support which save, location, and activity trigger the problem; do not assume deleting the older save is necessary.

- Several games crash: Stop treating this as only a Tainted Grail issue. Check system software and storage, and contact PlayStation support if other titles also fail.
- The console powers off: That is different from the game closing to the dashboard. A full shutdown can involve a wider console, power, or thermal issue and warrants PlayStation support rather than save deletion.
- Only this game fails: Game software, a particular save, DLC interaction, or installation corruption become more plausible, but the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
- It freezes briefly but recovers: Record whether it is a short hitch, frame-rate issue, screen tearing, or a lasting freeze. A temporary hitch is not the same as an application crash.
How to report a reproducible crash
Send Questline a concise report with enough detail to reproduce the problem. Include:
- PS5 model (standard, Slim, or Pro) and whether the copy is digital or disc.
- Game version and PS5 system-software version.
- Whether the game is installed on internal or USB storage, and whether DLC is installed.
- Exact location and activity: loading, autosave, combat, dialogue, resting, fast travel, or another trigger.
- Whether every save is affected or only one, and whether a new test save behaves differently.
- Any error code, the date and approximate time, and a screenshot or video if available.
Questline support lists [email protected] and its developer Discord as contact routes. Start from the publisher’s support page. PlayStation likewise recommends providing error codes, reproducible steps, a detailed description, and screenshots or video where possible.

Should you buy the PS5 version?
The patch history makes the current version a more reasonable prospect than launch-era reports suggest, but it does not establish flawless stability. If occasional instability is tolerable, consider trying the free PS5 demo listed on the PlayStation Store page first, install available updates, and judge performance on your own console. If you require reliably crash-free play, waiting for stronger player-confirmed evidence is the cautious choice. An edition upgrade, DLC purchase, or cloud-streaming subscription is not a verified fix for crashes.
