How to Fix an Application Using 100% CPU on Windows or Mac

If one application is using nearly all of your CPU, first determine whether the reading is a brief burst or remains high while the computer is otherwise idle. A short spike can be normal; sustained load can make the system slow, hot and noisy. Identify the exact process, note what it was doing, stop only what you can safely identify, and then check whether the CPU reading falls.

On Windows, start with Task Manager and Resource Monitor. On macOS, use Activity Monitor. Microsoft treats CPU usage that stays at 80 percent or higher for an extended period as a condition worth investigating; its Performance Monitor guidance uses continuous utilization above 85 percent as an indication of a possible CPU bottleneck. Those are troubleshooting thresholds, not proof that an application is defective.

What high CPU usage means

CPU percentage describes how much of the processor’s available capacity a process is consuming at that moment. A demanding, intentional task can briefly use most or all of a core or the whole processor. Video encoding, compiling, importing a large project or calculating a complex simulation may therefore produce a high reading without an error. The useful question is whether the work finishes and the reading returns to normal, or whether the same process remains busy without an obvious reason.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance focuses on usage that “consistently remains at 80 percent or higher for extended periods.” A separate Microsoft Performance Monitor guideline says continuous utilization above 85 percent indicates a CPU bottleneck. Treat both figures as investigation triggers. They do not establish that every application showing 80 or 85 percent is broken, and they do not mean a momentary 100 percent spike needs repair.

Situation What to do first Risk of the first action
Brief spike during a known task Let the task finish and watch whether CPU falls Lowest; interrupting may discard work
Sustained high usage from a visible application Save work, close or restart that application, then recheck Low if work is saved
Sustained usage from an unfamiliar process Record its name and process ID (PID), inspect its owner and activity before stopping it Stopping the wrong process can close a session or destabilize Windows
Repeatable load with no clear trigger Correlate the time, task, scripts, sign-in events or scheduled work; collect a short trace if necessary Low when observation comes before disabling software

Find the process on Windows

1. Confirm that the load is sustained

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. On the Processes tab, select the CPU column to sort from highest to lowest. Select it again if the order is ascending.
  3. Watch the list for several minutes. Record the process name, the approximate CPU percentage, the PID (you can display it on the Details tab), and what task was running. Note whether the usage is constant, intermittent or tied to an action such as opening a file or signing in.
  4. Expand grouped entries. The top-level group can represent several windows or services; expanding it shows the application or service actually consuming the CPU.

Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar. A system process may be legitimate, and a visible application may be performing a task you started. Identification comes before removal, reconfiguration or service changes.

2. Check average use in Resource Monitor

  1. Press Win+R, type resmon, and press Enter.
  2. Open the CPU tab. Sort by Average CPU to reduce the chance that a one-second spike dominates your decision.
  3. Use the process name and PID from Task Manager to match the entry. Look at associated services and the time pattern, then write down what was happening when the load appeared.

Resource Monitor is especially useful when Task Manager shows a host process containing several services. It helps you distinguish the process that is busy from a related service that only happens to be grouped with it.

3. Apply the least disruptive action

  1. Save documents and complete or cancel any operation that should not be interrupted.
  2. Close the application normally. Reopen it only after CPU usage has returned to an ordinary level.
  3. If the window will not close, select the application in Task Manager and choose End task. This can lose unsaved work, so use it only when normal closing fails or the application is unresponsive.
  4. If a Windows service is responsible, identify its role before stopping it. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Go to services when that option is available. Stop a service only when you understand what depends on it and can restore it.
  5. Wait and observe the CPU column again. A successful intervention is one in which the identified process falls and overall responsiveness improves; if another process immediately takes its place, record that change rather than assuming the first process was the root cause.

4. If the process returns, correlate the trigger

Microsoft’s WMI troubleshooting guidance recommends checking when the load occurs, how often it recurs and which client process or script initiated the work before disabling or uninstalling anything. Keep a simple log with the date and time, process name, PID, CPU pattern, the task in progress and any sign-in, scheduled or monitoring activity at that moment. A process that appears only during a particular job needs a different response from one that starts at every boot and stays busy.

Find the process on macOS

1. Read Activity Monitor’s CPU view

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.
  2. Select the CPU tab and sort the process list by CPU. Select the column heading again if needed to place the highest consumers at the top.
  3. Observe the process for long enough to distinguish a sustained load from a brief spike. Note the process name, what task was running and whether the value changes in a repeating pattern.

Activity Monitor separates processor time into System, used by macOS processes; User, used by applications and their processes; and Idle, the unused CPU capacity. A high User value points toward applications or their child processes, while a high System value indicates that macOS itself is doing the work. The categories describe where CPU time is going; they do not by themselves identify a fault.

2. Check the current view and recent trend

Use Window > CPU Usage for a current view or Window > CPU History for a recent trend. CPU History can show whether the load is a single event, a repeating burst or a continuous plateau. That distinction helps you decide whether to let a task finish, restart an app or investigate a recurring trigger.

3. Quit or force-quit the troublesome process

  1. Select the application or process in Activity Monitor.
  2. Choose the Stop button in the toolbar, then choose Quit when available.
  3. If it does not respond, choose Force Quit. Unsaved work can be lost, just as with an enforced termination on Windows.
  4. Watch the CPU view after the process exits. If the same process returns, record what action or system event preceded its return instead of repeatedly force-quitting it without investigating.

Apple’s support guidance specifically recommends Activity Monitor when a Mac is sluggish or unresponsive because it can locate and force-quit troublesome applications or processes.

When the same application keeps using the CPU

Separate workload from malfunction

Repeat the operation that triggers the load, if doing so will not risk data, and note the exact input or command. A task that consistently consumes CPU only while it is actively processing may be working as designed. A process that remains busy after the task has finished, or that becomes busy while the application is idle, deserves further diagnosis.

Check timing and recurrence

  • Does the load begin at sign-in, at startup, when a file is opened, or on a schedule?
  • Does it recur at a predictable interval or only after a particular action?
  • Does closing one window stop it, or does a background process continue?
  • Does the PID change when the load returns? A new PID can indicate a restarted worker, service or helper process rather than the original instance.

These observations are more useful than uninstalling software immediately. They preserve a path back to the cause and prevent an unrelated service from being disabled.

Restart, update or repair in a controlled order

  1. Restart the application after saving work. This clears a stuck session without changing system-wide settings.
  2. Restart the computer if the process or its helper remains active after the application closes. Confirm the CPU level before launching other programs.
  3. Use the application’s own repair, reset or update option if the trigger is repeatable and isolated to that application. Keep a record of the version and the operation that reproduces the load.
  4. If the load began after a configuration change, undo that one change and test again. Changing several settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret.

Advanced Windows diagnosis

Inspect ownership, threads and stacks with Process Explorer

For a persistent or uniquely named Windows process, Microsoft documents Process Explorer as a way to inspect the process owner, its threads and the call stack. Use the process name and PID recorded in Task Manager, verify the path and owner, and inspect which thread is consuming time. Thread and stack evidence can reveal whether the work originates in the application, a helper component or a service host.

Process Explorer is an investigation tool, not a reason to terminate every unfamiliar entry. Do not delete files or disable services based only on a name. If ownership, path or behavior does not make sense, preserve the details and ask an administrator or the software vendor for interpretation.

Collect a short performance trace

When the problem is repeatable but process-level views do not explain it, collect a short Performance Monitor or Windows Performance Recorder trace while the CPU is high. Microsoft cautions that logs grow quickly; a few minutes is usually sufficient. Start the trace before reproducing the issue, stop it soon after the pattern is captured, and label the file with the time, process and operation tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A trace is most useful when paired with a clear question: which process starts the work, which thread stays busy, or what event coincides with the spike? Capturing hours of data without a defined interval creates a large file without improving the diagnosis.

Investigate WMI-related load before disabling anything

If the busy process or service is associated with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), correlate the PID and recurrence pattern with scripts, monitoring tools, sign-in events and scheduled work. A client process can repeatedly issue expensive requests while the WMI service appears to be the visible consumer. Identify the initiating client first; disabling WMI or a monitoring service can break legitimate administration and still leave the initiating script unchanged.

What developers and power users should profile

Apple notes that an idle program should not use CPU time and that an active program should consume a proportionate amount based on the complexity of its task. For software you maintain, profile the workload rather than guessing from the total percentage. Check whether an expensive function is called too frequently, whether a loop has a termination condition, and whether work continues after the user-visible operation has completed.

  • Capture a profile while the application is idle and another while the reproducible task is running.
  • Compare the hottest functions and the number of calls, not only the overall CPU percentage.
  • Check background workers, timers and retry paths that may continue after an error.
  • Test with the smallest input that reproduces the behavior, then with a normal input, so the cost of the workload is clear.

This evidence distinguishes an algorithm that is legitimately expensive for a large input from a regression that calls the same expensive operation repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heat, fan noise and apparent slowdowns

Sustained CPU work produces heat, so a loud fan or a warm chassis can accompany the high reading. Those symptoms confirm that the processor is busy; they do not identify why. First reduce or understand the workload using the process steps above. Consider cooling or hardware service only when you also have documented thermal throttling, abnormal temperatures or a cooling-system problem. A cooling accessory is not a default fix for an application that is simply doing heavy work.

If CPU usage falls after the process exits but the computer remains slow, record that separately. Memory pressure, storage activity or a driver can create a different bottleneck, and treating every slowdown as a CPU fault can send the investigation in the wrong direction.

A practical decision path

Observation Next step Evidence to keep
One brief spike during an intentional operation Allow the operation to finish; watch the trend Operation name and start/end times
One application remains high and responds normally Save, close, relaunch and test the same operation Process name, PID and trigger
Application is unresponsive Use End task on Windows or Force Quit on macOS after saving what you can Unsaved-work risk and CPU level after exit
Unknown process or service Inspect owner, path, services and timing before stopping it PID, owner, associated service and recurrence
Repeatable unexplained Windows load Correlate scripts and scheduled work; inspect with Process Explorer; capture a short trace Trace interval and reproduction steps
Mac application you maintain is persistently busy Profile the workload and inspect call frequency and background tasks Idle and active profiles plus the smallest reproducing input

Actions to avoid

  • Do not treat a single 100 percent reading as proof of a defect.
  • Do not uninstall an application before recording the process, PID, timing and trigger.
  • Do not stop a Windows service when you do not know its role or what depends on it.
  • Do not force-quit before saving work when the application still responds.
  • Do not collect an unnecessarily long performance log; a few minutes around a reproducible event is usually enough.
  • Do not assume that a fan, cooling product or hardware replacement will fix a software task that is intentionally CPU-intensive.
