If it is still responsive, use the normal stop command or control-panel action. If it is frozen, record the time and symptoms before terminating it.
- Make a complete copy of
ShooterGame/Saved. Include world saves, configuration, cluster data, and any other files in that directory. Keep the copy outside the live server folder and label it with the date and build. - Copy existing logs and crash dumps. Preserve
ShooterGame/Saved/Logs/ShooterGame.logand any operating-system or engine dump before another launch can overwrite useful context. - Record the failure point. Note whether the process exits, hangs, fails while downloading or loading a mod, stops while loading a map, or is killed by the host for running out of memory.
- Only then begin one controlled test at a time. Change one variable, record the result, and retain the backup so you can restore the original state.
The ARK Official Community Wiki recommends a backup before updating a server because the installation contains saves, configuration, logs, and cluster information. That same discipline is essential before mod removal, file replacement, or a rollback.
Crash, hang, or out-of-memory termination?
These symptoms look similar to players but require different fixes. Use the server process, CPU graph, operating-system events, and the last log lines to classify the incident.

| What you observe | Likely class | First investigation |
|---|---|---|
| The server process disappears and a new launch starts normally or fails again. | Process or engine crash | Read the crash dump and the final lines of ShooterGame.log; check recent updates, mods, and configuration changes. |
| The process remains, players cannot connect, and CPU usage falls to zero. | Engine hang | Capture logs and resource graphs without immediately restarting; compare the timing with a mod, map, or configuration change. |
| The host or operating system kills the process during startup or heavy activity. | Memory pressure or out-of-memory event | Check RAM, swap/pagefile, and system event logs at the exact failure time. |
| The failure occurs while a mod is downloading or initializing. | Missing, mismatched, or incompatible mod | Verify mod IDs and server-side files, then run a no-mod launch. |
| The server fails only while loading one map or existing world. | Corrupt or incompatible save/map state | Test a fresh world on the same server build and mod list while preserving the original save. |
An external watchdog can restore availability after a hang, but it should not erase evidence. Configure automatic restarts only after logs and a save copy are secured; repeated forced stops can roll back or damage world state.
Read the log before changing anything
Where to look
Start with ShooterGame/Saved/Logs/ShooterGame.log. Also collect the newest crash dump and the host’s service or operating-system event record. Compare timestamps: a memory kill may appear in the host log rather than in ARK’s own log, while a mod exception may be visible only in the final ARK lines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the final lines can tell you
- A named mod, package, asset, or download operation points toward a mod mismatch or incomplete server files.
- Repeated save, serialization, or map-loading errors make the world or persistent mod data suspect.
- Allocation failures, an operating-system out-of-memory event, or a steadily rising resident-memory graph support a memory diagnosis.
- No new log lines while the process remains alive, combined with zero CPU use, is consistent with a hang rather than a normal crash.
Do not infer a cause from one generic “fatal error” line. Correlate the message with the launch stage, recent change, and resource measurements. Starting again before reading runtime output can clear the only useful context.
Validate the installation after updates or suspected corruption
Use SteamCMD’s app_update operation with the validate option for the ARK dedicated-server application. Validation compares installed files and reacquires damaged or missing content. Perform it after an interrupted update, unexplained binary errors, or a suspected corrupt installation.
- Stop the server and copy
ShooterGame/Saved, configuration files, and cluster data to a safe location. - Run SteamCMD for the dedicated-server application, selecting the installed branch and invoking
app_updatewithvalidate. - Wait for the operation to finish without launching the server in parallel.
- Confirm that the server and every connecting client are on compatible versions.
- Start once with the original configuration and inspect the log before making another change.
If validation does not help, a clean re-download can remove installation corruption, but it must come after the save and configuration backup. Replacing binaries cannot repair a damaged world file or an incompatible mod.
Isolate mods with a controlled bisect
A crash immediately after a mod update, during mod download, or while loading mod content is strong evidence of a mismatch, missing server files, or a mod that no longer supports the current build.

Run a no-mod baseline
- Record the current mod IDs and copy the save before changing the list.
- Disable every mod in the server’s configuration without deleting its files or the original save.
- Launch the same server build and map. A stable no-mod run establishes that the core installation can start.
- If the no-mod run still fails, return to file validation, memory, permissions, and save testing instead of blaming a mod.
Find the failing group
If the clean server is stable, re-enable mods in small groups, restarting only after each controlled change. When a group reproduces the crash, split that group and test each half; continue until one mod or a specific interaction is identified. Verify that every configured ID exists on the dedicated server, that its files completed downloading, and that it is current for the server build. Keep the list as small as the server design permits.
Back up again before removing a mod that added persistent items, creatures, structures, or storage. Removing content can leave references in the world; restoration of the pre-change copy is safer than experimenting on the only live save.

Check memory pressure instead of guessing a RAM number
There is no authoritative one-size-fits-all minimum or recommended RAM figure for an ARK dedicated server. Requirements vary with map, connected players, world age, structures, creatures, stored items, configuration, and installed mods. A small new world can run normally while an older, populated world exceeds the same host’s limit.
Prove that memory is the bottleneck
- Watch total RAM, the server process’s resident memory, swap/pagefile use, and disk activity while reproducing the failure.
- Check the operating-system event log or host panel for an out-of-memory kill at the crash timestamp.
- Compare a fresh world and the production world on the same build and mod set; a failure only with the mature world supports a workload-related limit.
- Check free disk space as well. A full volume can prevent paging, logs, saves, or mod downloads and may mimic a memory problem.
Choose a remedy
If measurements show sustained memory exhaustion, reduce the workload or add capacity. A compatible server RAM upgrade must match the host’s RAM generation, maximum capacity, speed, channel layout, and any ECC requirement. Confirm the platform’s limits before purchasing modules.
Recommended Free Tools
The official server-configuration reference documents -GBUsageToForceRestart=<value>. This option saves the world and restarts the server when the configured gigabyte threshold is reached, providing containment for a process that approaches exhaustion. It does not create RAM, cure a leak, or make an undersized host adequate; set it only after determining a safe threshold and confirming that saves complete correctly.
Test for a corrupt or incompatible save
When the server crashes while loading one map or world, preserve that original directory and perform a comparison test:
- Copy the affected save and label it as the original. Never experiment on the only copy.
- Use the same server build, configuration, and mod list to create a fresh world.
- Stop the test and inspect whether the fresh world reaches a playable state without crashing.
- If the fresh world works, focus on the original save, map state, or persistent mod data. Try a known-good backup if one exists and compare the timing of the last successful start.
- If both fresh and existing worlds fail, return to installation validation, resource checks, permissions, and service setup; the save is less likely to be the primary cause.
Do not overwrite the original with a test result. Keep the failed copy available for later recovery, and restore a backup only when you have confirmed which files belong together for that build and mod set.
Fix directory permissions and service setup
The server must be able to create and write its ShooterGame/Saved folders and files. A service that can read binaries but cannot write saves, logs, or downloaded mods can fail during startup or appear to crash after a successful launch.
Linux
- Run the service as an unprivileged account that owns the server directory or has explicit read/write permission throughout it.
- Confirm that the account can create a file in
ShooterGame/Savedand its log subdirectory, then remove the test file. - Set the service’s
WorkingDirectoryto the actual server installation path. The ARK dedicated-server guidance notes that a missing working directory can cause issues, including failed automatic mod downloads. - Check mount options, disk quotas, and available space if permissions appear correct but writes still fail.
Windows
- Identify the account used by the scheduled task, service wrapper, or control panel rather than assuming it is your interactive login.
- Grant that account write access to the installation and
ShooterGame/Saveddirectories. - Review User Account Control and security software rules that may block the server from creating files or launching child processes.
- Launch once under the intended service account and verify that a fresh log entry and save-related files are created.
Avoid running permanently as an administrator or root merely to hide a permission error. Correct ownership, path, and service identity are safer and make future backups and updates predictable.

An engine hang leaves the process present but unresponsive: players cannot connect, no useful log progress appears, and CPU usage may drop to zero. Treat this differently from a process exit.

- Note: This memory is ECC Unbuffered and cannot be mixed with different ECC types such as ECC Registered, ECC Load Reduced, or Non-ECC Unbuffered; (Memory compatibility can vary among different system models and their installed components; please verify compatibility and follow memory channel guidelines to ensure maximum performance)
- Capture the current log, process ID, CPU and memory graphs, and the time of the last successful player action.
- Check recent mod, map, configuration, and update changes against that timestamp.
- Allow a reasonable observation period if the server could be performing a long save or world operation; do not assume every pause is a crash.
- After evidence is preserved, use the host’s controlled restart or watchdog policy to restore service.
- Review the next launch’s logs and compare whether the hang recurs at the same stage.
A watchdog improves availability but cannot diagnose the underlying fault. Set restart limits and alerting so a loop is visible, and retain each pre-restart log and save copy.
Recovery playbooks for common crash loops
Crash began after a server update
Stop the service, back up the save and configuration, validate the installation, and verify client/server version compatibility. If the update introduced the failure and you have a known-good backup, restore the matching binaries and data as a coordinated rollback rather than mixing versions.
Crash began after a mod update
Preserve the save, disable all mods, and establish a clean baseline. Reintroduce groups until the failing mod or interaction is isolated. Confirm server-side files and compatibility before restoring the mod to the production world.
Only the mature world crashes
Measure memory and test a fresh world with identical build and mods. If only the mature world fails, work from a backup and investigate save or persistent mod state; do not delete the original while testing.
The process disappears with no useful ARK error
Correlate the timestamp with operating-system events, host resource graphs, and crash dumps. An out-of-memory kill, permission failure, and binary corruption may produce little application-level evidence, so those external records are decisive.
If you move to managed hosting or add a control panel
Evaluate operational features rather than a headline player count. Before migrating, confirm that the service supports your ARK edition and map, accepts the mods you use, and lets you retrieve the actual save and log files.
| Capability | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Backups | Are backups automatic, how many generations are retained, and can you download and restore a specific world? |
| Logs and dumps | Can you access ShooterGame.log, crash dumps, and timestamps without opening a support ticket? |
| Monitoring | Are RAM, CPU, disk, swap/pagefile, process state, and player connectivity visible during an incident? |
| Mod handling | Does the system verify downloads, expose mod IDs, and let you disable or bisect a list safely? |
| Updates | Can you stage an update, validate files, and roll back after a failed release? |
| Restart controls | Are watchdogs, restart limits, maintenance windows, and alerts configurable? |
A management panel can automate routine work, but it cannot replace a tested backup or a diagnosis based on logs and measurements.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next crash
- Back up
ShooterGame/Savedbefore every server update, mod removal, or major configuration change. - Keep dated copies of logs and note the build, map, player count, and mod list for each change.
- Monitor RAM, swap/pagefile, CPU, disk space, and process state instead of waiting for player reports.
- Keep the mod list minimal, verify server-side files, and update one mod or group at a time.
- Run the service with the least privilege that still permits required reads and writes, and set the correct working directory.
- Use a restart threshold or watchdog only as containment, with alerts and evidence retention.
- Periodically restore a backup to a test instance so you know the files are usable before an emergency.
