First check Roblox’s official status page, restart Windows, and identify whether you installed Roblox from the Microsoft Store or the Roblox website. Then repair the Store app or clean-reinstall the desktop client before moving on to security software and Windows repairs.
Start with checks that do not change your system
- Check service status. Visit Roblox status. If Roblox confirms a service incident, wait for it to be resolved rather than changing Windows settings. If the status page shows normal service, continue; that does not by itself prove the issue is local.
- Restart Windows. A stuck Roblox process or installer can interfere with another launch. Roblox recommends restarting as part of its desktop troubleshooting and reinstall guidance: desktop issues and reinstalling Roblox.
- Close Roblox-related processes. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Close Roblox Player or Game Client, Roblox Studio, the Roblox installer, and any browser tab repeatedly trying to launch a game. End only processes you can identify as Roblox-related, then try again.
- Compare what fails. Note whether Roblox Studio opens, whether every experience fails or only one, and whether the problem began after a Roblox, Windows, driver, or security-software update. If only one experience fails, the cause may be specific to that experience rather than the Windows client; see Roblox’s connection troubleshooting.
Identify which Roblox installation you use
Windows may have the Roblox app installed from the Microsoft Store or the traditional desktop client installed through Roblox’s website. The Store app has Windows-provided Repair and Reset controls; the desktop client is better handled with a clean uninstall and removal of its remaining local Roblox folder. You may have both installed. Roblox also recommends trying the other official version if one remains broken: Roblox’s failed-to-load-library guidance.
To check, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or the installed-apps list in Windows 10 Settings, then search for Roblox. If the app’s entry offers Advanced options, it is the Store app. Labels and placement can differ slightly by Windows version.
Fix the Microsoft Store Roblox app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Roblox, select the three-dot menu beside the Store app, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for it to finish, then try Roblox.
- If the launch error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, then try again. Reset is more aggressive than Repair and may remove local app data or require you to sign in again.
If Advanced options or these controls are not present, check that you selected the Store app rather than the desktop client. Microsoft documents the repair, reset, uninstall, and reinstall options for Store apps in its Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guide.

Clean-reinstall the desktop Roblox client
Use this path if you installed Roblox from the website, or if the desktop client remains broken. The Roblox folder can contain installation files and cached data, so removing it may mean downloading files again and signing in.
- Close Roblox, Roblox Studio, and the installer. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Roblox, and uninstall the desktop client.
- Restart Windows.
- Press Windows+R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - In the folder that opens, delete the Roblox folder if it remains. Do not delete unrelated folders. If Windows says the folder is in use, restart and try again.
- Install Roblox again only from the official Roblox website or Microsoft Store, sign in, and try launching an experience.
Roblox recommends restarting around reinstallation and clearing temporary data as part of desktop troubleshooting. Its guidance identifies the local Roblox directory as a location for Roblox files and cache: reinstall instructions and file and cache troubleshooting. If the browser opens Roblox but does not hand off the Play request, clearing that browser’s cache and cookies is a separate, optional test; you may need to sign in to websites again.

Check security software and background utilities
Antivirus, firewall, parental-control, web-filtering, or endpoint-security products can quarantine Roblox files, block network access, or interfere with updates. Overlays, screen recorders, RGB utilities, injectors, and unofficial launchers can also conflict with startup or anti-cheat behavior. Roblox discusses third-party security restrictions here and firewall issues here.
- Update your security product and check its quarantine or detection history for Roblox files.
- Restore a quarantined file only if you can verify it belongs to an official Roblox installation. If needed, add the official Roblox installation folder to that product’s allow list. The desktop client’s local folder is typically
C:Users<YourWindowsUsername>AppDataLocalRoblox. - In Windows Defender Firewall, allow Roblox on the network types you use. Follow your security product’s instructions rather than turning protection off as a lasting workaround.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, or close third-party filtering and overlay utilities, then test Roblox. If you briefly disable protection solely as a diagnostic test, use only an official Roblox installation and turn protection back on immediately afterward.
If Roblox opens but cannot join an experience, test a different network, such as a phone hotspot, and restart your router. That points toward a connection or network-filtering problem rather than a client that cannot start. Roblox says client ports are dynamically selected, so generic instructions to forward one fixed Roblox port are not dependable.

Repair Windows system files
If Roblox still fails after reinstalling, Windows components may be damaged. Run Microsoft’s built-in repair tools from an elevated terminal; Roblox includes DISM and System File Checker in its advanced troubleshooting.
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Then run:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows and try Roblox again.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. DISM can take time even when progress appears slow. If it reports that the component store cannot be repaired, install available Windows updates and retry; repeated command failures may point to a broader Windows problem.

Install Windows and graphics updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install pending updates and restart.
- Check the graphics adapter under Device Manager > Display adapters. If a suitable update is not offered there, use the official driver page for your graphics manufacturer, such as NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
Roblox lists outdated Windows and graphics drivers among possible compatibility causes in its troubleshooting guidance. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities, which are unnecessary for this diagnosis and can install unsuitable software.
Use a second account or official Roblox version as a diagnostic
Test another Windows account
Open Settings > Accounts > Other users, add another user, sign in to that account, and install or launch Roblox. If it works there, the original profile may have damaged app data, permissions, or security settings. Roblox suggests testing a new Windows user account as an advanced check in its troubleshooting guidance. This is a way to narrow down the cause, not a reason to abandon the original account immediately. On a school or managed PC, an administrator may control account creation, app installation, or security settings.

Try the other official Roblox client
If one installation path fails, try the other: use the Microsoft Store app if the website-installed desktop client fails, or the official desktop client if the Store app fails. This can distinguish an app-package problem from a wider Windows or account issue.
When to contact Roblox Support
Contact Roblox Support if both official client versions fail, a clean reinstall and Windows repairs do not help, or the error names a DLL, memory dump, anti-cheat component, or security violation. Also escalate if Roblox began failing after an update and the problem affects multiple users.
Include the exact error wording, Windows edition and version, which client you use, when the problem began, whether all experiences are affected, troubleshooting already tried, relevant security software, and any named DLL or crash-log reference. Roblox’s desktop troubleshooting page may also help with details to collect.
Final troubleshooting order
- Check Roblox status, restart Windows, and close identified Roblox processes.
- Identify the Store app versus desktop client; repair or reset the Store app, or clean-reinstall the desktop client.
- Check quarantine, allow-listing, VPNs, proxies, and conflicting overlays without leaving security protection disabled.
- Run DISM and SFC, then update Windows and the graphics driver.
- Test another Windows account or the other official Roblox version, then contact Roblox Support if neither resolves it.
Do not download DLLs, modified clients, or launchers from unofficial sites, and do not edit the registry or reset Windows as early fixes. Running Roblox as administrator is not a universal remedy.
