FFmpeg retry options can help with some supported network operations, but they do not guarantee that a live output will resume after your broadband path fails. YouTube’s backup ingest is also not a backup internet connection. Diagnose the failure, then choose a recovery method that addresses the layer that actually broke.
First, identify what failed
Do not change FFmpeg flags until you know whether FFmpeg stopped producing video or lost its route to YouTube. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, CPU load, stream-health dashboard, and a local recording. If the local output remains healthy but the outbound connection is failing, the problem is likely on the network path rather than in the encode.
- Input or encoder failure: FFmpeg reports source-read, decoding, or encoding errors; the local recording may also freeze or fail.
- System overload: CPU load is high and FFmpeg cannot keep up, even if the connection is available.
- YouTube ingest or stream configuration: YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health errors, or the ingest session is rejected.
- Broadband or route failure: the local encode remains healthy while the outbound connection drops or YouTube’s connection test reports a problem.
YouTube advises: “If you find issues with your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider to troubleshoot.” See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Save useful diagnostic details safely
Record the time of the failure, FFmpeg version and build information, the relevant end of the FFmpeg log, whether the process exited or remained blocked, and whether the source and local recording stayed healthy. Redact the YouTube stream key from commands, logs, screenshots, and support requests. Anyone with the key may be able to publish to your stream.

Check FFmpeg reconnect behavior without assuming it fixes publishing
FFmpeg documents protocol-level options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their applicability depends on the protocol and the installed build. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and run ffmpeg -h for the protocol and version you actually use.
These options do not establish that an RTMP live output will automatically resume cleanly after an ISP outage. In particular, distinguish reconnecting an input—such as a network source—from reconnecting the output publishing session to YouTube. A retry may restore a supported network operation without restoring the live session in the way you expect.

If FFmpeg exits and you use a supervisor to restart it, test the whole recovery path before relying on it. Confirm what YouTube shows after the restart and avoid launching a second process that publishes a competing session. Recovery time and session behavior depend on the specific setup; they are not guaranteed by a retry flag.
Set bitrate for the connection you can actually sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test your sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends a preflight that includes movement and audio representative of the intended stream, followed by monitoring stream health. These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance or a promise that a connection will remain stable. The table is only for the listed H.264 modes; consult YouTube’s page for other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates. As a practical precaution, leave room for upload variability and other household traffic rather than planning to consume every bit of measured capacity. There is no single universal bitrate for Indian connections.
Lowering bitrate may help when the connection is overloaded or variable, but it cannot restore a broadband path that is completely unavailable. If a representative test shows an outbound connection problem while the encode is healthy, contact the ISP rather than treating the issue as an encoder setting.

Know what YouTube backup ingest can—and cannot—do
YouTube’s Live Streaming API provides primary and backup ingestion addresses for supported protocols, and allows the same content to be sent to the backup address. This provides an alternate ingest destination; it does not create a second route from your location to the internet. If the broadband path is down, neither destination can receive your stream over that path. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
For failover to work, the primary and backup streams must match. YouTube lists resolution, video and audio codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio parameters among the settings that must agree. YouTube states: “Your primary and backup streams must have the exact same settings for failover to work properly.” Check the current YouTube live-stream error guidance before configuring failover.

Consider an independent internet path only after diagnosis
A separately routed mobile-data or other internet service may help if the failure is on your primary ISP route and the alternate path is still available. Whether it is useful depends on local coverage, power, data allowance, and whether the providers share relevant infrastructure. No single provider or device can be recommended without location-specific availability information. Treat this as a possible connectivity-redundancy approach, not a guaranteed fix.
Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the command
