How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream That Freezes on One Video

A video-specific freeze can start in the source file, FFmpeg’s output, YouTube’s ingest, or the network. Diagnose the fault before changing settings.

If an FFmpeg stream freezes only with one video, don’t assume a particular encoder setting is to blame. First find out whether the file itself stalls, FFmpeg stops producing or sending output, or YouTube reports an ingestion or configuration problem. Compare the same file locally, inspect FFmpeg’s complete log, and check YouTube Live’s stream-health diagnostics before changing settings.

Identify where the freeze starts

A freeze is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The available evidence does not establish a single cause for this exact one-video problem, and without your command, logs, file details, and YouTube health report, no specific root cause can be confirmed. Use the same affected file and stream conditions while checking each part of the path.

  1. Save the exact FFmpeg command and full output around the freeze. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing logs or commands. Check whether FFmpeg continues advancing frames, whether its reported speed stays near real time, whether output packets stop, and whether an explicit connection, decoding, timestamp, or muxing error appears.
  2. Play or decode the file locally. Compare its behavior with a known-good video. Check the input and output stream information and logs for decode or timestamp errors, and confirm the expected video and audio streams are present. Local playback working does not by itself rule out an issue in the live output, but a local stall or decode error gives you a source-file problem to investigate.
  3. Check YouTube Live’s stream-health panel. If you use the Live API, inspect status.healthStatus and configurationIssues[]. YouTube health states include good, ok, bad, and noData; stream states include active, inactive, ready, and error. noData means the backend has no health information; it does not confirm that the stream is healthy. See Google’s LiveStream health-status messages.
  4. Follow the reported issue, not a guess. YouTube’s issue categories cover bitrate, frame rate, codecs, GOP length, missing or multiple streams, and video-ingestion starvation. The videoIngestionStarved issue means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, so viewers may experience buffering. See the configuration-issue catalog.
  5. Change one evidence-backed setting at a time. Repeat the same stream conditions and compare the new FFmpeg log and YouTube health messages. That makes it easier to tell whether the change addressed the reported problem.

Check keyframes, GOP, and video encoding

If YouTube reports a keyframe or GOP problem, target one keyframe every two seconds and use a closed GOP. YouTube Help says to send keyframes every two seconds; at 30 fps, that is 60 frames. It also says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. The API issue catalog flags keyframe intervals longer than four seconds, but the two-second interval is the more conservative target in YouTube’s Help guidance. These are configuration recommendations, not proof that a GOP setting caused your freeze.

Verify the encoded output and YouTube’s report after changing encoder settings. A requested encoder setting does not guarantee that the delivered stream has the intended keyframe interval or GOP structure. YouTube’s guidance and error messages are documented in Live streaming error messages and LiveStream configuration issues.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • If the health report names GOP or keyframe length, correct that before changing unrelated settings.
  • If it reports bitrate too high or too low, use the report and your actual encoder configuration to choose a correction. There is no universal bitrate established for this particular symptom.
  • If frame rate or resolution is flagged, compare the actual output with the configured YouTube stream settings and the report’s stated limit.

Verify streams, codecs, and primary/backup consistency

Inspect the output that FFmpeg is actually sending. In the configuration described by YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance, use H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with one video stream and one audio stream. The guidance also flags missing or multiple video/audio streams, interlaced video, frame rates above the configured limit, and incorrect resolution. Follow the requirements for your specific YouTube setup rather than treating a codec change as a general-purpose freeze fix.

If you send both primary and backup streams, compare the corresponding settings. YouTube can flag mismatches in frame rate, resolution, codec, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio properties. Use the values in the health report and the current encoder settings; do not assume the two streams match because they use the same source file. See YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance and the API issue catalog.

Use reconnect options only for a transport failure

If the log shows an RTMP/RTMPS or other relevant network disconnect, investigate the connection route and FFmpeg’s reconnection behavior for the protocol in use. FFmpeg documents protocol reconnection options in its protocol reference. Reconnection can address a disconnection; it does not repair a bad GOP, unsupported stream structure, source decode error, or an ongoing stream that is not delivering enough video. It also does not guarantee that playback resumes from the exact frame where it stopped.

If there is no transport error and FFmpeg continues sending, reconnect settings are unlikely to address the evidence you have. Resolve the health-report or media issue that matches the observed behavior instead.

Don’t increase FFmpeg’s muxing queue as a blanket fix

FFmpeg’s documentation explains how the muxing queue behaves and says its defaults should be sufficient for most uses. Increase a queue only when the logs point to that queue as the problem; changing it without evidence can obscure the actual cause rather than fix it. See FFmpeg’s documentation.

Common symptoms and the next check

What you observe What to check next
The local file also stalls or FFmpeg logs decode or timestamp errors. Investigate the affected input and its timestamps separately; compare its stream information and decode behavior with a known-good file.
YouTube reports videoIngestionStarved. Check whether FFmpeg is delivering video steadily and whether its output falls behind or stops. The report means YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming.
YouTube names a keyframe, GOP, codec, stream-count, frame-rate, or resolution issue. Correct that specific reported configuration and verify the delivered output rather than changing unrelated options.
YouTube reports bitrate too high or too low. Compare the actual encoder output with the reported problem and adjust based on that evidence, not an assumed universal bitrate.
The primary and backup streams have a mismatch. Compare frame rate, resolution, codec, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio properties across both streams.
FFmpeg logs a TCP/TLS or RTMP/RTMPS disconnect. Investigate the route and relevant protocol reconnection behavior; reconnect options address disconnections, not media or encoding faults.
There is no specific health issue, no transport error, and no source error. Keep the command and full logs, reproduce under the same conditions, and change only one testable variable at a time. A noData health state is inconclusive.
