If your FFmpeg stream reaches YouTube with audio but no picture, first check whether FFmpeg detects video in the intended input. Then trace that video through stream mapping, filters, encoding and YouTube’s ingest preview. Audio arriving only confirms that an audio path works; it does not prove the video path is intact. Without your command and log, there is no reliable one-line fix.
Find where the video disappears
Read the FFmpeg log from the start and follow the video path in order: input, mapping, filters, encoder and output. The first stage where video is absent or fails is the one to investigate.
1. Check the input streams
Run the command with its usual inputs and inspect the Input #... sections near the beginning of the log. For the input that should provide the picture, look for a Video: entry as well as any Audio: entry.
- No video entry: FFmpeg is not receiving video from that input. Check that you selected the intended file or capture device, and that the input format and input options match the source. Capture devices may support only particular formats; available format-listing controls depend on the device and platform. Consult the FFmpeg device documentation for the relevant input.
- Video entry is present: Continue to stream mapping. The input probe establishes that FFmpeg sees video, not that it will send it to YouTube.
2. Check the stream mapping
Find the Stream mapping: section in the log. It should show the intended input video feeding an output video stream. FFmpeg selects streams automatically when you do not specify -map; explicit -map options take manual control for that output and can leave video out.

For example, if the probe shows video on input 0 and audio on input 1, a deliberate mapping could be -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0. Use that only when those input and stream indices match your actual log. Mapping an audio stream alone, using the wrong input index, or mapping the wrong stream can produce audio without video. See the FFmpeg documentation on stream selection.
3. Trace any filtergraph output
If the command uses -filter_complex, verify that the graph creates a video output and that the output is mapped. For example, a graph that labels its video output [outv] needs a matching output mapping such as -map "[outv]". The actual label and input selectors must match your graph; adding this example blindly can make the command wrong. FFmpeg also gives unlabeled complex-filter outputs special handling, so inspect the graph and the resulting mapping rather than assuming an unlabeled output is being used as intended.

4. Check video encoder initialization and format
If the log shows video mapped to the output but encoding fails, inspect the selected video encoder and its error messages. Check that the encoder is available in your FFmpeg build and that it accepts the input dimensions, frame rate and pixel format. Encoder options and supported formats vary by encoder; FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes them.
A pixel-format conversion may be needed, but the correct conversion depends on the source and encoder. Do not treat -c:v copy as a general fix: stream copy skips decoding and encoding, so it cannot perform filter-based pixel-format conversion.

5. Verify the stream at YouTube
After correcting the FFmpeg path, test the live ingest before a public broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the planned stream. Confirm that the preview shows moving video as well as sound. YouTube can transcode an accepted incoming stream for viewers, but that does not restore video that FFmpeg never sent.
6. Consider HLS only for a protocol or codec reason
Switching from RTMP to HLS is not a fix for missing input video or incorrect mapping. YouTube documents HLS ingest for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support; HLS has its own required format and encoder settings and higher latency. Consider it only when the content or codec calls for that route, not as a generic no-picture remedy. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

What to share if you need an exact correction
The fix depends on the command and the point where the video path fails. To get useful help, provide:
- Your FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key removed.
- FFmpeg version and build information.
- The relevant
Input #...stream listings andStream mapping:lines. - Any video encoder errors and, if available, what the YouTube ingest preview shows.
Keep the stream key private: it allows someone to send a stream to your channel.
