A 500 Internal Server Error immediately after editing .htaccess usually means Apache cannot parse a directive, a rewrite rule is invalid, or the server is configured not to allow that directive in the file’s directory. Make a backup, rename the file temporarily, and check the Apache httpd error log before changing anything else. The log normally identifies the offending file and line; once the cause is corrected, WordPress sites can regenerate their standard rules from Settings > Permalinks.

What an .htaccess 500 error means
Apache reads .htaccess files while handling a request for a directory. A syntactically valid-looking line can still be unacceptable in that directory, on that server, or with the enabled modules. When Apache cannot apply the file, it returns a generic 500 response instead of serving the page.

- Malformed directive: The directive name or its arguments are not valid.
- Invalid syntax: A directive exists, but a flag, delimiter, regular expression, or argument is written incorrectly.
- Override policy: The server’s
AllowOverrideorAllowOverrideListsettings do not permit that directive in an.htaccessfile. - Missing rewrite support: A rule depends on
mod_rewriteor another module that is not loaded. - Application conflict: WordPress, a plugin, or a theme may have written rules that do not work with the current Apache configuration.
The browser’s 500 page does not distinguish these causes. Treat it as a pointer to the server log, not as a diagnosis.

- Preserve the current file. Download or copy the existing
.htaccessbefore changing it. Keep the copy outside the public web root if possible. If the file is hidden in your file manager, enable “show hidden files.” - Rename the active file. Rename
.htaccessto a temporary name such as.htaccess_old. Do not delete it. With shell access, the equivalent operation ismv .htaccess .htaccess_oldfrom the directory containing the file. - Request the site again. Test the home page and one URL that previously failed. If the site loads after the rename, the file is implicated. If the 500 remains, the cause is elsewhere or another parent directory contains a failing
.htaccess. - Open the Apache error log. Look at the
httpderror log entry generated at the time of the request. Apache’s guidance is: “If, on the other hand, you are getting server errors when trying to access documents, check your httpd error log.” Record the complete message, the file path, and the line number before making a correction. - Correct one cause at a time. Restore a clean file or add one corrected directive, then test. Avoid pasting several unrelated rule sets while the original failure is still unknown.
- Retest the affected scope. Check the home page, a static asset, an existing page, a nonexistent URL, and (for WordPress) an administration page. A rule can fix one route while breaking another.
- Keep the backup until the site is stable. Do not remove
.htaccess_olduntil successful requests and log entries confirm that the final file works.
Renaming the file is an isolation test, not a permanent repair. On a WordPress installation, the normal next step is to regenerate the file after the bad version has been removed or corrected.
Read the error log and classify the failure
The exact wording in the Apache log determines the branch to follow. A 500 page alone cannot tell you which branch applies.
“Directive is not allowed here”
This message indicates an override-policy problem rather than a spelling mistake. Inspect the directory or virtual-host configuration for AllowOverride and AllowOverrideList. Confirm that the directive’s permitted override category includes the directive you are trying to use in this directory.
Only an administrator who can edit the relevant Apache directory or virtual-host configuration can change that policy. If you have access only to the site files, remove the disallowed line or ask the host to permit the required directive. Do not work around a policy error by repeatedly changing punctuation; Apache will continue to reject a directive that is forbidden in that context.
Invalid directive, flag delimiter, or syntax
A syntax message means Apache reached the line but could not parse it. Common examples include a misspelled directive, an unmatched quote or parenthesis, an incorrectly separated flag, or an argument in the wrong order. Compare the line with the Apache documentation for that directive and check the line immediately before it as well; an unclosed construct can make the following line appear to be the problem.

Correct only the reported construct, save the file, and request the same URL again. A directive can be legitimate and still produce a 500 when its syntax is invalid, so “this directive is supported” is not enough evidence that the line is correct.

If the log names a rewrite directive or says that a rewrite command is unknown, verify that mod_rewrite is loaded for the Apache instance serving the site. Also verify that the rule is valid in the current directory context. A rule copied from a virtual-host configuration may not be valid when placed in a per-directory .htaccess file.
Restore WordPress’s standard rules
WordPress commonly fails after a permalink change, a plugin update, or manual editing of rewrite rules. Once the faulty file has been moved out of the way, restore the standard block in the document root that serves the WordPress installation:
# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# END WordPress
Keep the BEGIN WordPress and END WordPress markers intact. They identify the block that WordPress can replace. If your installation is in a subdirectory, the base and target paths must match that installation’s directory context; do not blindly use root paths for a subdirectory site.
Regenerate the block from the WordPress dashboard
- Sign in to WordPress.
- Open Settings > Permalinks.
- Leave the selected permalink structure unchanged unless you intend to change it.
- Click Save Changes.
Saving this screen makes WordPress write its standard rewrite rules again. Test a normal page and a nonexistent page afterward. If WordPress cannot reach the dashboard because every request still returns 500, place the clean block manually, restore access, and then save the Permalinks screen.

Validate rewrite rules in their current Apache context
Rewrite directives are context-sensitive. Check each of the following before adding custom redirects or front-controller rules.
mod_rewrite is available
RewriteEngine, RewriteBase, RewriteCond, and RewriteRule require rewrite support. On shared hosting, the module may already be enabled but hidden from you; on a server you administer, verify that the Apache instance serving the site has mod_rewrite loaded. If it is absent, no change inside .htaccess can enable it. The host or server administrator must enable the module.
Per-directory syntax is correct
Rules in .htaccess are evaluated relative to the directory containing the file. A pattern copied from a virtual-host configuration may include a leading slash or a path assumption that is wrong in per-directory context. Confirm the expected path, substitution, and flags in the Apache documentation for the directive.
Flags and conditions are complete
Review brackets, commas, colons, and separators in every flag list. Check that each RewriteCond belongs to the RewriteRule immediately following it and that regular expressions are balanced. A single malformed flag can stop Apache from parsing the entire file and cause a site-wide 500.
Override permission covers every directive
Even when mod_rewrite is loaded, Apache can reject a rewrite directive if the directory policy does not allow it. Check both the broad AllowOverride setting and any directive-specific AllowOverrideList. If the policy is outside your account, send the log message and the affected path to the host instead of guessing at replacement rules.

Separate a WordPress conflict from an Apache failure
If a clean, standard .htaccess works but the 500 returns after WordPress loads its normal rules, isolate application-level changes.
- Deactivate plugins temporarily. If the dashboard is inaccessible, use the host’s file manager or another available WordPress recovery method to disable plugins, then test again.
- Switch temporarily to a default WordPress theme.
- Request the previously failing URL after each change.
- Re-enable plugins one at a time and restore the normal theme only after the site remains stable.
This process identifies a plugin or theme conflict without permanently removing settings. Keep the original .htaccess backup separate: WordPress-level isolation does not prove that every custom Apache rule is safe.
Choose the fix from the evidence you have
| Situation | First action | What it establishes | Access usually required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site-wide 500 immediately after editing the file | Back up and rename .htaccess, then request the site |
Whether the file is implicated | File-manager, FTP, or shell access to the document directory |
| Log says a directive is not allowed here | Inspect AllowOverride and AllowOverrideList |
Whether Apache’s override policy blocks the directive | Directory or virtual-host configuration access, or host assistance |
| Log reports invalid syntax or flag delimiters | Correct the named line against the directive documentation | Whether parsing can complete | Ability to edit and retest the file |
| Only WordPress routes fail after permalink changes | Restore the standard WordPress block and save Settings > Permalinks | Whether generated front-controller rules are the issue | WordPress administrator access or manual file access |
| Clean rules work, but the error returns with the application enabled | Deactivate plugins and switch to a default theme temporarily | Whether a WordPress component is conflicting | WordPress administrator or equivalent recovery access |
Use the narrowest test that matches the evidence. A file-only change is reversible; changing server policy affects every site or directory covered by that configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon symptoms and targeted corrections
The site works after renaming the file
Keep the renamed copy. Read the error log entry from the failed request, then rebuild from a minimal known-good file. For WordPress, use the standard block above and regenerate it through the Permalinks screen. Add custom rules individually, testing after each addition.
The site still returns 500 with no active file
The failing file may be in a parent directory, or the problem may be in the virtual-host configuration, PHP/application code, permissions, or another server component. Check the log for the current request rather than assuming the renamed file was the cause. If you cannot access the log, ask the host to identify the exact file and directive path.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Only one directory fails
Look for a separate .htaccess in that directory and for inherited rules in parent directories. Compare the failing path with a working sibling path. A directory-specific override or an inherited policy can produce a 500 even when the document root file is valid.
The homepage works but permalinks fail
This pattern points toward rewrite processing rather than basic file serving. Verify mod_rewrite, the per-directory rule syntax, the RewriteBase, and the WordPress front-controller conditions. Then save Settings > Permalinks to regenerate the standard block.
A redirect rule creates a loop instead of a 500
A loop is a different failure from a parser error. Remove the newest redirect or rewrite rule, restore the last working backup, and test one rule at a time. Check the log and the browser’s redirect chain; do not treat a redirect loop as proof that Apache rejected the file syntax.
When to contact your hosting provider
Escalate when the required fix is outside file or WordPress access. Give the host enough information to investigate without asking them to guess:
- The exact UTC or local time of a failed request.
- The requested URL and whether the failure is site-wide, directory-specific, or limited to WordPress routes.
- The complete Apache error-log message, including the file path and line number.
- The name of the file you backed up and the temporary name used during the isolation test.
- Whether renaming
.htaccesschanged the response. - Whether
mod_rewriteis enabled for the serving Apache instance. - The applicable
AllowOverrideandAllowOverrideListpolicy, if the host can inspect it. - Recent changes to the virtual-host or directory configuration, enabled modules, permissions, plugins, or themes.
Ask specifically for a check of the vhost and directory configuration, enabled modules, permissions, and recent server-log entries. Managed Apache hosting support or WordPress hosting support can perform these checks when your account cannot.
Prevent the next .htaccess outage
- Download a dated backup before every edit.
- Make one change at a time and keep a short note of the line changed.
- Validate the directive against the Apache documentation for the version and context in which it will run.
- Test the home page, an existing content URL, a static file, a nonexistent URL, and the WordPress dashboard after each change.
- Keep WordPress’s managed block intact and place custom rules outside its markers so a permalink save does not overwrite them.
- Retain the last known-good file until logs show normal requests after the change.
- Do not change
AllowOverride,AllowOverrideList, or module configuration without understanding which directories and sites the change affects.
The shortest reliable path is therefore: preserve the file, rename it to test the hypothesis, read the Apache log, fix the precise syntax or override problem, verify rewrite support and context, and regenerate WordPress rules only after the server accepts a clean file.
