If a local video in OBS plays once and stops, open the source’s Properties and turn on Loop. The similarly named Restart playback when source becomes active setting does not repeat a file at the end; it controls what happens when the source becomes active and visible in the current scene.
First identify which OBS source you added
OBS has two relevant source types for this problem. Media Source is for an individual local media file. VLC Video supports playlists. The right loop control depends on which one is in your scene.
- If you added one local video file, use Media Source and enable Loop.
- If you added several files as a playlist, use VLC Video and check Loop Playlist.
The phrase “on YouTube” could mean YouTube is where your OBS stream is going, or that you are trying to play YouTube-hosted media. The settings below address OBS’s documented local-file and playlist sources; they do not establish how a YouTube video embedded or otherwise brought into OBS behaves. See OBS’s Media Sources guide for its source types and properties.
Loop one local video file in OBS
- In OBS, find the relevant scene in the Scenes list and select it.
- In Sources, select the Media Source that contains the video.
- Open that source’s Properties.
- Enable Loop, then apply or confirm the change.
OBS documents Loop as the setting that plays the file again after playback completes. Its guide lists the default as Off, so a source using its default setting will stop at the end rather than repeat.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not confuse Loop with Restart playback when source becomes active
Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether the file starts again when the source becomes active and visible in the current scene. OBS lists this setting’s default as On. It can make a file begin at the start when the source becomes active, but it does not by itself make the file repeat when it reaches the end. For end-of-file replay, enable Loop.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Make sure VLC is installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to be available.
- In the scene’s Sources list, add or select a VLC Video source and configure its playlist.
- Open the source’s properties and check Loop Playlist.
OBS documents Loop Playlist as On by default. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s guide specifies installing 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear in the source list, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches that requirement.

If the video still stops
- Check the source type. Confirm that the scene contains the Media Source or VLC Video you intended to configure, rather than a different source.
- Check what is being looped. A single local file needs Media Source’s Loop; a playlist needs VLC Video’s Loop Playlist.
- Reopen the properties. Verify the relevant loop option is enabled for the source that is actually in the scene.
- For VLC Video, check installation. VLC must be installed for the source to be available; 64-bit OBS calls for 64-bit VLC.
- Separate playback from streaming. The title alone does not establish a YouTube-specific cause. First confirm that the OBS source is a documented local-file or playlist source and that its loop option is enabled.
OBS’s Source API Reference documents media restart and stop controls, but that documentation does not identify a particular user-facing shortcut as the fix for this scenario.
