OBS automatic reconnect can help after a connection drop, but it cannot prevent Windows from restarting the PC.
Set Windows Update controls around your broadcast
These instructions are for Windows 11. Labels and rollout behavior can vary by version and device. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ describes active hours and scheduled restarts as restart-timing controls—not a promise of uninterrupted streaming. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ
1. Set active hours
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Set the active-hours window to cover your broadcast as far as the available daily schedule allows.
- For a round-the-clock stream, do not assume active hours cover every hour. Plan a maintenance window for restarts and check Windows Update before a long broadcast.
Active hours tell Windows when to avoid automatic restarts; they do not lock the PC against every update-related interruption.
2. Schedule a required restart
If Windows Update says a restart is needed, select Schedule the restart and choose a time when an interruption is acceptable—ideally before going live or during a planned gap. Check update status ahead of a long stream rather than waiting for Windows to prompt during the broadcast. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ

3. Pause updates for a short-term buffer
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates.
- Choose an end date. Microsoft’s current guidance allows pausing up to 35 days from the current date.
- Before the pause expires, plan when to resume updates and install them. After the selected date, Windows checks for and installs the latest available updates.
During the pause, updates that require a restart are not downloaded or installed. A pause is a temporary deferral, not a permanent way to turn off automatic updates. Microsoft’s instructions for pausing updates
Know what each setting does—and does not do

What changed in Windows 11’s 2026 restart behavior
Microsoft says that, starting with Windows updates released on and after July 28, 2026, selected restart-requiring updates can be combined with the monthly security update so they need one restart. Its August 14, 2026 guidance names driver, .NET, and firmware updates and applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The rollout is gradual, and Windows schedules the combined restart outside active hours whenever possible. Microsoft’s one-restart-a-month guidance
This is a reduction in some restart interruptions, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Microsoft says critical or expedited drivers, emergency or out-of-band updates, Defender security intelligence updates, and AI component updates are not held for that combined monthly restart. Combined updates will not be held indefinitely.

Configure OBS as a recovery layer
In OBS, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a streaming baseline suited to your hardware and network, then test the setup before relying on it for a long broadcast. OBS’s overview guide describes Automatic Reconnect as an available option for connection drops. That recovery feature is separate from Windows Update: OBS documentation does not promise that it will reopen the YouTube stream automatically after the entire PC restarts.

Troubleshoot interruptions and notifications
Windows says a restart is required during the stream
Use Schedule the restart to select an accepted maintenance time, then check Windows Update status before the next long broadcast. Active hours reduce the chance of a routine restart landing in the stream; they are not a 24/7 lockout.

Update banners appear, but the PC is not restarting
Review Do not disturb settings if you want fewer banners, including its automatic triggers for full-screen apps. Keep this separate from the restart plan: silencing a notification does not schedule or prevent a restart.
The stream drops while OBS is still open
Check OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting and test the broadcast setup. It is intended as a connection-recovery layer, not a way to block an operating-system restart.
Windows resumes updates after a pause
That is expected when the chosen pause date arrives. Windows checks for and installs the latest available updates after the pause ends; plan a maintenance window rather than relying on the pause as a standing policy.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates and security fixes. If the streaming PC is still on Windows 10, check Microsoft’s support information and your upgrade or support options. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ
