Start by checking controller power and moving closer to the Xbox or PC. Then test a wired USB connection: if the controller works over USB, focus on wireless pairing or the host’s wireless connection; if it does not, check the cable and ports before suspecting the controller. The right steps depend on whether you’re using an Xbox console or a Windows PC, and on the controller’s connector.
First identify the host and controller
Are you connecting to an Xbox console or a Windows PC? Also check which port is on the controller: different models use USB-C or micro-USB, so the cable must fit and support data, not just charging. Microsoft lists USB, Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless as connection options for Xbox controllers on Windows: Microsoft’s Windows connection guide.
Check power and distance
- Replace or recharge the batteries or battery pack, as appropriate, then try connecting again.
- Move closer to the console or PC while testing. Microsoft lists low battery and being out of range among possible causes of Bluetooth connection trouble: Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting.
Test the controller over USB
- Use a known-good USB data cable with the connector that fits your controller.
- Connect it directly to a suitable USB port on the console or PC and make sure both ends are firmly seated.
- If it does not respond, try another suitable port and another cable.
If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, that points the next checks toward pairing, range, or the host’s wireless connection; it does not prove which one is at fault. If it also fails over USB, rule out the cable and port, and check power before deciding the controller needs repair. Microsoft also recommends trying a different cable when a controller firmware update does not complete. Microsoft Helps’ controller troubleshooting video (published February 23, 2021) covers a range of controller issues.
Pair the controller again on a Windows PC
- Open Windows Settings and confirm Bluetooth is turned on.
- Put the controller in pairing mode with its Pair button. A Microsoft Q&A community answer advises holding the button for three seconds, but the exact procedure can vary by controller model; follow the instructions for your controller if they differ. Microsoft Q&A.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose the option to add a device, then select the Xbox controller when it appears.
- If it will not pair or drops the connection again, check distance and battery, then use Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance for possible driver, service, or update issues.
Check controller firmware
Connect the controller by USB and open Xbox Accessories. On an Xbox console, Microsoft’s troubleshooting video gives this route: Guide > Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the controller, open its “…” menu, and check its firmware status. If an update is offered, follow the prompts.

If the update does not complete, Microsoft’s guidance is to disconnect accessories, power-cycle the console if needed, ensure the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends, and try another cable. An update running in the background may take up to five minutes. If console updating still fails, Microsoft advises trying the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC. See the Microsoft Helps troubleshooting video for the update sequence.
Choose a connection method for a Windows PC
| Method | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | You want a direct connection or a way to distinguish a wireless problem from a broader controller or host issue. | Use a data-capable cable that matches the controller’s port; try another cable and port if it fails. |
| Bluetooth | Your PC supports Bluetooth and you want a wireless connection without a cable. | Bluetooth must be enabled; check pairing mode, battery, distance, and Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting. |
| Xbox Wireless | You want to connect through Xbox Wireless on a compatible Windows setup. | See Microsoft’s Windows controller connection guide for supported connection methods. The sources cited here do not establish current adapter availability or pricing. |
Use the results to narrow the fault
- Works by USB, fails wirelessly: keep troubleshooting pairing, range, the PC’s Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless path, and controller firmware.
- Fails by USB: try another data cable and port, and verify power. A wired failure with one cable or port alone is not enough to establish that the controller is defective.
- Connects, then drops: start with battery or charge and distance; on Windows, also check the Bluetooth troubleshooting steps for driver, service, or update problems.
These tests narrow down likely areas but do not identify one universal cause: the symptom alone cannot tell you whether the controller, cable, port, or host is responsible.
