The best Pokémon Go alternative depends on what you want to do outside: play team-based territory strategy at landmarks, turn walks into a collecting routine, hunt monsters along your route, or search for real hidden containers. Ingress, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, and Geocaching cover those different kinds of exploration—but Geocaching is an outdoor GPS treasure hunt, not a creature-collection game.

These are different outdoor activities, not interchangeable versions of the same game. Decide whether you want to walk anywhere or visit particular destinations, and whether you prefer collecting, combat, team competition, or finding a physical cache. Then check the map and community near you: local points of interest and player activity can affect how worthwhile a location-based game feels.
Ingress: play for landmarks and team territory strategy
Ingress is built around real-world Portals and two competing factions. Players discover Portals, neutralize rival control, link locations, create fields, and coordinate with teammates. The official site calls it “worldwide, team-based, geomobile territory control.”
Choose it if visiting landmarks and working with a team sounds more appealing than collecting creatures. The game’s official description emphasizes collaboration and territorial control, so it is a more strategic fit than a relaxed walking-and-collecting routine.

On March 12, 2025, the Ingress Team said the game would continue to be owned and operated by a new startup, Niantic Spatial, with the Enlightened and Resistance continuing their battle for global control. That statement describes the plan announced at that time; it is not a broader update on the ownership of other games.
Pikmin Bloom: make walking and steps the main activity
Pikmin Bloom makes walking the center of play. Grow Pikmin, plant flowers while you walk, review daily steps and activity, and collect Decor Pikmin associated with places. Its official site reported more than 600 Decor Pikmin types when accessed in 2026; the count can change as the game adds content.

Pick Pikmin Bloom if you want an incentive to get out for a walk and enjoy collection without making combat the main attraction. Its Party Walk feature supports group walking. The feature announcement says location information is not shared with other Party Walk participants or hosts; that assurance applies to Party Walk and should not be read as a general privacy guarantee for the app.
Monster Hunter Now: fit short hunts into a route
Monster Hunter Now ties action combat to movement through your surroundings. Its launch page describes turning a regular commute or walking route into a hunting ground, with brief hunts rather than requiring every outing to revolve around a long session.

The game also uses regional exploration bases and distinct habitats. Monsters and gathering points vary by habitat, and what you encounter can depend on your area and progress. Choose it if you want combat as the reason to walk, rather than walking itself or landmark control.
Geocaching: search for real containers outdoors
Geocaching is the most literal destination-led exploration option here. Geocaching HQ describes it as “a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game”: use GPS-enabled devices to locate hidden physical containers, then share the experience online.

A GPS-enabled phone can be used; a dedicated GPS receiver is optional. Consider dedicated hardware only if you want a separate device for navigating outdoors. Unlike the other options in this list, Geocaching is not a mobile creature-collection game: the goal is finding real caches.

A game can sound ideal and still offer little nearby activity. Points of interest, available map content, events, app availability, and player communities can vary by location and change over time. Before investing time, check that the game is available in your market and inspect the nearby map or community features where possible. No universal “best” choice can account for activity in every town or neighborhood.
