If Google Earth Pro is already installed but will not start, use its built-in Repair Tool first; if the installer itself fails, switch to Google’s full/direct installer. The browser version of Google Earth is a separate product and cannot repair a failed desktop installation.
Work through the steps below in order, stopping when your specific failure is resolved. The least invasive actions clear cached data or reset Earth preferences. Deleting saved places and repairing Windows system files require more care.

What error 0x80070057 means in Google Earth Pro
In this context, 0x80070057 is a Windows-style installer or system error. Google Earth Help Community reports show it appearing while Google Earth Pro is being installed, but those reports do not establish one universal cause for every computer. A failed download, damaged installer state, graphics incompatibility, corrupted Windows components or another local configuration problem can produce similar symptoms.
First identify where the failure occurs:
| What you see | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google Earth Pro is installed but crashes, hangs or shows a blank globe when opened | Google Earth Pro Repair Tool | It can clear the disk cache, restore preferences and change graphics mode without reinstalling Windows. |
| The program starts only in some sessions or fails during rendering | Safe Mode, atmosphere settings and OpenGL/DirectX switching | These options disable or change advanced graphics features. |
The installer stops with 0x80070057 |
Google’s full/direct installer | The small online installer may fail even when the complete installer works. |
| Other Windows updates or installers fail with the same code | Windows troubleshooting and System File Checker | The problem may extend beyond Google Earth Pro. |
Before repairing: protect My Places
Google Earth Pro stores saved locations in a My Places file. Most Repair Tool actions are low risk, but the option that removes My Places changes that file. Use it only when saved places appear to be causing crashes or startup failures.
#1 Best Overall
When you use Delete My Places, Google Earth renames the removed file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml. That backup can be opened to recover your saved places. Do not delete that backup until you have confirmed that the places you need are available.
Run the Google Earth Pro Repair Tool
The Repair Tool is the correct first-line repair for an installed copy of Google Earth Pro. It is designed to clear cache data and fix startup issues while keeping the repair inside the application.
- Start Google Earth Pro.
- Open Help and choose Launch Repair Tool.
- Leave the Repair Tool window open, then close the main Google Earth Pro window.
- Apply the repair that matches your symptom, beginning with the least disruptive option.
Clear the disk cache
Choose Clear disk cache. Cached globe and imagery data are recreated when Google Earth needs them, so clearing this cache is generally the safest repair. The first launch or navigation after clearing may take longer while data is rebuilt.
Rank #2
Restore default settings
If a preference has become incompatible or corrupted, select Restore default settings. This returns Google Earth preferences to their original state. Any custom settings that matter to you will need to be configured again, but this action is reversible by changing those settings later.
Try Safe Mode
Use the Repair Tool’s Safe Mode option when startup or display behavior suggests an advanced-graphics problem. Safe Mode turns off advanced graphics. If Google Earth opens reliably there, the application itself may be intact and the fault is more likely related to rendering settings or the graphics driver.
Turn off atmosphere
If the globe fails while drawing the horizon, glow or sky, turn off Atmosphere in the Repair Tool. This removes the globe glow and darkens the sky. It is a graphics workaround rather than a reinstall, and you can enable the effect again later.
Switch between OpenGL and DirectX
Google Earth Pro on Windows can use either OpenGL or DirectX. In the Repair Tool, choose Switch between OpenGL and DirectX and then restart Google Earth Pro. A mode change can resolve a compatibility problem that appears as a crash, missing imagery or a black or otherwise incorrectly rendered window.

Use the driver supplied for your graphics hardware and Windows edition; installing an unrelated driver can create new display problems.
Delete My Places only when saved places are implicated
If Google Earth crashes while loading your saved locations, choose Delete My Places. The Repair Tool renames the removed file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml rather than discarding it outright. Once Google Earth starts, open that backup file to recover places selectively. If the crash is unrelated to My Places, do not use this step; it adds unnecessary recovery work.
Rank #4
When the installer itself returns 0x80070057
If the error appears before Google Earth Pro is installed, the in-app Repair Tool cannot help because there is no working desktop installation to repair. Use Google’s full/direct Google Earth Pro installer instead of the small online installer.
- Obtain the full/direct installer from Google’s official Google Earth desktop download page.
- Close any failed installer windows and run the downloaded full installer.
- Allow the installer to finish before launching Google Earth Pro.
- If the full installer also fails, note whether Windows displays another code or message; that information determines whether the problem is specific to the package or part of a wider Windows installation failure.
The full installer is a practical fallback reported for this error. It does not turn the browser edition into the desktop application, and opening Google Earth in a browser will not complete or repair a failed Windows installation.

Do not confuse Google Earth web with Google Earth Pro desktop
Google Earth in a browser and Google Earth Pro desktop are separate technologies. A browser session can let you view Earth while the desktop program remains uninstalled or damaged, but it does not replace the Windows executable, repair its cache or restore its local preferences. Troubleshoot the desktop copy with the Repair Tool or the desktop installer when the message names Google Earth Pro.

Check Windows when other installations also fail
Use Windows-level repairs only when the symptoms extend beyond Google Earth Pro—for example, Windows Update or unrelated installers also report 0x80070057. Microsoft lists this code among Windows Update failures and recommends running the Windows troubleshooter. The exact troubleshooter location varies by Windows release, so open Windows Settings, search for Troubleshoot, and run the troubleshooter offered for Windows Update or the installation problem you are seeing.
Run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt
Microsoft also recommends System File Checker for corrupted files or incorrect system configuration.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent, then read the result before restarting Windows and retrying the Google Earth Pro installation.
sfc /scannow checks Windows system files; it is not a Google Earth-specific guarantee. Running it with administrator rights is important. If the scan reports that it could not repair files, keep that result for further Windows troubleshooting instead of repeatedly launching the Google Earth installer.

Choose the least disruptive repair
| Remedy | Best use | Data risk | Scope and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear disk cache | Startup problems, stale or damaged cached imagery | Low; cache data is recreated | Changes Google Earth cache only |
| Restore default settings | Suspect preferences or persistent startup configuration | Custom preferences are lost | Google Earth settings can be configured again |
| Safe Mode or disable atmosphere | Graphics-related crashes or rendering failures | Low | Graphics features can be re-enabled |
| Switch OpenGL/DirectX | Driver or graphics API compatibility symptoms | Low | Switch back through the same Repair Tool option |
| Delete My Places | Crashes while loading saved places | Requires recovery from the renamed KML backup | Limited to the My Places file |
| Full/direct installer | 0x80070057 during installation | Does not alter existing Windows files | Replaces the failed online-installation route |
| Windows troubleshooter | Other Windows Update or installation failures | Operating-system scope | Applies Windows diagnostics, not just Earth settings |
sfc /scannow |
Suspected corrupted Windows files or configuration | Operating-system scope; administrator rights required | Repairs eligible protected system files |
Verify the repair
After each change, test only the behavior that originally failed:
- For an installation failure, restart the full/direct installer and confirm that setup completes.
- For a startup failure, launch Google Earth Pro repeatedly and open the area or saved place that previously triggered the crash.
- For a graphics failure, rotate and zoom the globe, then test the previous OpenGL or DirectX mode only if the new mode is stable.
- For a My Places failure, open the recovered
myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kmland confirm that important locations are present before deleting anything else.
Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify the cause. If one repair works, keep a note of it before trying another. If none works, record whether the error occurs in the installer, at application startup or during rendering; those are different failure paths.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the browser edition as a repair: it is separate from Google Earth Pro desktop and cannot fix a Windows installation.
- Deleting My Places without preserving the backup: the renamed KML file is the recovery route for saved locations.
- Starting with Windows-wide repairs for an Earth-only cache problem: clear the application cache or restore Earth settings first.
- Assuming the code proves one specific cause: community reports show the code in installation failures but do not establish a single root cause for every machine.
- Running System File Checker without elevation: open Command Prompt with Run as administrator so the command can inspect and repair protected files.
- Expecting graphics-mode switching to repair the installer: OpenGL and DirectX changes address rendering and startup behavior, not a failed download or package.
Optional shortcut
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and invalid redirects, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities and potentially unwanted apps, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
