How to Fix Apache Error AH00072: make_sock Could Not Bind to Address

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Apache AH00072 means Apache could not create a listening socket for the address and port in the error line. In most cases, another process already owns that socket, producing (98)Address already in use on Linux or the equivalent (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind message on other Unix-like systems. Read the exact endpoint Apache reports, find which process owns it, then either free that endpoint, move the other service, or give Apache a non-overlapping address. If no process owns it, check that the IP is assigned locally, that the startup path has permission to use a low-numbered port, and that mandatory access-control policy allows the bind.

What AH00072 is telling you

The important part of the log entry is the socket, not just the error code. Apache may report an IPv6 wildcard such as [::]:80, an IPv4 wildcard such as 0.0.0.0:80, or a specific address such as 192.0.2.10:443. That endpoint is where the investigation must start.

A listening socket is the operating-system reservation that lets a server accept connections. Only one process can normally claim the same address-and-port combination. If another service already has it, Apache cannot start or reload that listener and emits AH00072. Red Hat’s example is (98)Address already in use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80.

The error can also be caused by Apache’s own configuration. Overlapping Listen directives are fatal: a wildcard listener already covers every local address, so adding a specific listener on the same port can collide with it. Apache documents that overlapping Listen directives prevent startup.

Fastest recovery path

Use this sequence in order. Substitute the port shown in your AH00072 line; the examples use port 80.

  1. Copy the failed endpoint. Record the IP form and port exactly, including whether it is [::], 0.0.0.0, or a specific address.
  2. Check the service log. On Debian or Ubuntu, run sudo systemctl status apache2 and sudo journalctl -u apache2. On RHEL or Fedora, use sudo systemctl status httpd and sudo journalctl -u httpd. The journal often shows the complete failure, including the “no listening sockets available, shutting down” message.
  3. Find the owner. Run sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':80' or sudo lsof -nP -iTCP:80 -sTCP:LISTEN. Replace 80 with the reported port. Apache’s troubleshooting guidance also lists netstat -plant and sudo lsof -i:80.
  4. Choose a non-destructive fix. If the owner is expected, stop or reconfigure it, or move Apache. If it is an unwanted duplicate Apache process, stop it cleanly before starting the service again.
  5. Audit Apache’s configuration. Search enabled configuration files for every Listen and <VirtualHost entry. Remove duplicate or overlapping listeners, and make sure each virtual host uses an address and port that Apache is actually listening on.
  6. Check the local interface. Run ip address. A specific address in Listen must be assigned to an active local interface.
  7. Check permissions and policy. A manually launched process needs privilege to bind ports below 1024. If SELinux is enabled, inspect the permitted HTTP ports with semanage port -l | grep http and administer any policy change through your normal SELinux procedure. Check AppArmor rules on systems that enforce them.
  8. Restart and verify. Run sudo systemctl restart apache2 or sudo systemctl restart httpd, then confirm the listener with sudo ss -ltnp and make an HTTP request to the intended address.

Identify exactly what owns the port

Use ss first

ss shows listening TCP sockets and, with the process option, the owning PID and program. For port 80:

sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':80'

Look for a line showing a process name and PID. Repeat with the exact port from the error. A listener on 0.0.0.0:80 or [::]:80 can prevent Apache from claiming the corresponding wildcard or specific address.

Use lsof when you need an unambiguous process view

sudo lsof -nP -iTCP:80 -sTCP:LISTEN

The -nP options avoid DNS and service-name lookups, while the final filter limits results to TCP listeners. The Apache Foundation also gives the shorter form sudo lsof -i:80. On older installations, netstat -plant provides the same type of ownership information.

Interpret the result before killing anything

  • Another web server or reverse proxy: It may be intentionally serving the public site. Stop it only if Apache is supposed to replace it.
  • A development server: A temporary application process may have claimed port 80 or 443. Stop that process or move it to a development port.
  • A second Apache process: A stale or separately started instance may still hold the socket. Use the service manager that owns Apache rather than launching a third copy.
  • No result: Continue with interface, configuration, privilege, and security-policy checks. A failed bind is not always caused by a currently visible listener.

Resolve a genuine port conflict

Keep the other service and move Apache

This is appropriate when another service must remain on the standard port. Change Apache’s listener to an unused port, then update the matching virtual-host definition and any firewall or client configuration that expects the old port. A listener and its virtual host must agree; changing only one leaves Apache accepting traffic somewhere different from where the site is configured.

Keep Apache on port 80 or 443 and move the other service

Use this when clients, load balancers, certificates, or firewall rules already depend on the standard HTTP or HTTPS port. Reconfigure the process identified by ss or lsof, restart that service, and verify that the old socket is released before restarting Apache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop an unwanted duplicate process

If ownership belongs to an extra Apache instance, determine how it was started. Mixing a manual launch with systemctl can leave one process holding sockets while the service manager tries to start another. Stop the extra instance through the appropriate service or process-management path, then start the intended instance once.

Fix Use it when What changes Risk to clients
Stop the port owner The owner is unnecessary or should be replaced The existing service is unavailable High if clients depend on it
Move the other service Apache must retain 80 or 443 The other service’s bind address, port, and possibly firewall rules Medium; clients may need a new endpoint
Move Apache The other service must keep its endpoint Apache Listen, matching <VirtualHost>, and access rules High if users still expect 80 or 443
Remove an overlapping listener The conflict is inside Apache configuration Enabled configuration files only Low after a clean restart

Fix duplicate or overlapping Listen directives

Search all enabled Apache configuration files, not just the main file. Include snippets brought in by distribution-specific “enabled sites” or “conf-enabled” directories. You are looking for repeated declarations of the same socket and for wildcard-plus-specific combinations.

Safe all-interface binding

Listen 80

This tells Apache to accept port 80 on all local interfaces. Use it when no narrower network binding is required.

Safe specific-address binding

Listen 192.0.2.10:80

This restricts Apache to that local address. It works only while 192.0.2.10 is assigned to an active interface.

A documented fatal overlap

Listen *:80
Listen 192.0.2.10:80

The wildcard already includes 192.0.2.10, so the second declaration overlaps the first. Keep one intentional listener or choose genuinely non-overlapping address-and-port pairs. Apache’s documentation describes overlapping Listen directives as a fatal startup error.

Match virtual hosts to listeners

Review each <VirtualHost> address and port while auditing Listen. A virtual host such as <VirtualHost 192.0.2.10:443> needs a corresponding listener for that socket. Correcting a listener collision does not automatically correct a virtual host that still points at an address Apache does not bind.

When no process appears to own the socket

The configured IP is not on this machine

A specific bind fails if the address belongs to another host, has been removed, or is attached to an inactive interface. Check:

ip address

Compare the output with the IP in the AH00072 line and in every relevant Listen directive. If the address is absent, either assign it through your network configuration or change Apache to an address that is present. Do not “fix” this by adding a listener for an address the server does not own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The startup path lacks permission for a low port

Ports below 1024, including 80 and 443, normally require elevated privilege at bind time. A service started through the distribution’s privileged service mechanism can have the required capability, while a manually launched unprivileged process may fail. Start Apache through the supported service path, or use a higher port for an intentionally unprivileged process and place a properly configured front end in front of it.

SELinux or AppArmor blocks the bind

Mandatory access-control policy can deny an otherwise available socket. On SELinux systems, inspect HTTP port labels with:

semanage port -l | grep http

Only add or change an allowed port through your organization’s SELinux policy administration. Do not disable enforcement as a first response. On AppArmor systems, inspect the profile governing Apache and its network permissions, then make a narrowly scoped policy change if needed.

Restart without preserving the original failure

After editing listeners, restart the correct service: sudo systemctl restart apache2 on Debian or Ubuntu, or sudo systemctl restart httpd on RHEL or Fedora. Apache can retain old sockets during some restart paths, so a restart that immediately follows a failed or overlapping configuration may still report the previous bind problem. Check the service journal, confirm that the old process has exited, and then start the service cleanly if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification should use both the socket table and an actual request:

  1. Run sudo systemctl status apache2 or sudo systemctl status httpd and confirm the unit is active.
  2. Run sudo ss -ltnp and confirm Apache owns the intended address and port.
  3. Send an HTTP request to that address, using the correct port if you deliberately moved Apache.
  4. If startup fails again, read the newest journalctl output rather than relying on an earlier AH00072 line; the failing endpoint may have changed after your edit.

Choose the right binding for your network design

The least disruptive configuration is usually one listener per intended socket. Decide whether Apache should serve every local interface or only a stable, assigned address.

Question If yes If no
Must another service remain on the current port? Move Apache or place it on a different local port. Free the port for Apache.
Do clients or firewalls assume 80 or 443? Prefer moving the competing service instead of Apache. A different Apache port may be acceptable after updating clients and rules.
Is the selected IP stable and assigned locally? A specific Listen is viable. Use an assigned address or an all-interface listener.
Will policy need to allow a nonstandard port? Plan the SELinux/AppArmor and firewall change before deployment. The existing policy may already cover the standard port.
Should the change affect every virtual host? Change the shared listener and review all sites. Use a separate, non-overlapping listener and matching virtual host.

Common mistakes that bring AH00072 back

  • Checking the wrong port: investigating port 80 when Apache actually failed on 443 leaves the conflict untouched.
  • Searching only one configuration file: an enabled snippet can contain the duplicate Listen directive.
  • Combining wildcard and specific listeners: *:80 already covers every local IPv4 address on port 80.
  • Changing Listen but not <VirtualHost>: Apache may start while the intended site remains attached to the wrong endpoint.
  • Binding to a public address not assigned locally: the address must appear in ip address on an active interface.
  • Launching a second instance manually: the service manager cannot claim sockets still held by the manually started process.
  • Disabling security controls indiscriminately: SELinux or AppArmor should be adjusted for the required port and profile, not broadly turned off.
  • Assuming a restart always clears everything: inspect the process table and journal when an old listener may still exist.

Preventive checklist

  • Keep one authoritative Listen declaration for each address-and-port pair.
  • Document which service owns ports 80 and 443 and why.
  • Use stable, locally assigned addresses for specific listeners.
  • Keep each <VirtualHost> address and port aligned with a real Listen socket.
  • Use the service manager consistently instead of mixing manual and managed Apache launches.
  • Record any SELinux or AppArmor port-policy change alongside the Apache configuration change.
  • After maintenance, verify ownership with sudo ss -ltnp and verify service state with systemctl.
