Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Apache will not restart after a PHP installation or update, do not keep retrying systemctl restart. First run the configuration syntax test for your distribution: sudo apache2ctl configtest on Debian or Ubuntu, or sudo apachectl configtest on RHEL-family systems. Fix the file and line reported by that command, then restart the correct service. A successful test prints Syntax OK.

sudo systemctl status apache2 --no-pager -l
sudo journalctl -u apache2 -b --no-pager
RHEL and Fedora
sudo systemctl status httpd --no-pager -l
sudo journalctl -u httpd -b --no-pager
Keep the first fatal-looking error, including its file path, line number, and module name. Later messages often describe the shutdown that followed the original failure rather than a second independent problem. Record whether the failure occurred while starting Apache, loading a module, opening a socket, or connecting to PHP-FPM. That distinction determines which service and configuration tree you inspect next.
Run an explicit Apache configuration test
Apache’s configtest checks the configuration-file syntax without trying to take over the listening ports. Apache also performs this check automatically during a restart, but running it separately exposes the error before another service-state change.

Use the command for your platform
| Platform | Syntax test | Expected success output |
|---|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu | sudo apache2ctl configtest |
Syntax OK |
| RHEL, Fedora, or a source installation | sudo apachectl configtest |
Syntax OK |
If the command reports Syntax error on line ..., open that exact file and inspect the named line before doing anything else. Correct the directive, remove an obsolete include, or restore the matching package-managed module file, then rerun the test. Do not proceed to a restart while the test still fails.
Run the test as the same privileged account used to manage the service so it reads the complete production configuration and can access included files. Copy the complete error, not just the final “failed” line; a missing filename, a version number, or a line reference is often the key clue. If the test names one file, fix that file first rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.

Understand which PHP integration your distribution uses
PHP is not integrated with Apache identically on every Linux distribution. Choosing instructions for the wrong model is a common reason a PHP upgrade leaves a stale module reference behind.
| Area | Ubuntu/Debian | RHEL 9 and related RHEL-family systems |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Apache integration | libapache2-mod-php loaded as an Apache module |
PHP-FPM through FastCGI by default |
| Web service | apache2 |
httpd |
| Additional PHP service | Not required for the module-based setup described here | php-fpm |
| Apache configuration locations | /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/ |
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf.d/ |
| PHP-FPM configuration | Depends on the chosen setup | /etc/php-fpm.conf and /etc/php-fpm.d/www.conf |
On RHEL 9, the Apache integration runs PHP through FastCGI Process Manager by default, and the mod_php module supplied for Apache has been removed. A copied LoadModule php... line from an older tutorial is therefore not an appropriate replacement for PHP-FPM.
Do not infer the integration model from the fact that the PHP command-line binary works. A working php command only proves that the CLI interpreter is installed; Apache still needs either its matching module or a working FastCGI connection. Treat the web server and PHP-FPM as separate services when the distribution uses FPM.
Fix the common PHP-related configuration errors
Stale or missing libphp*.so
An error such as Cannot load ... libphp*.so means Apache is being told to load a shared object that is absent, moved, or built for a different PHP installation. This often happens after a versioned PHP package is removed while its old Apache enablement remains.
On Debian or Ubuntu, inspect the enabled PHP module files:
ls -l /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php*.load /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php*.conf
Compare the files shown there with the PHP integration package installed for the current distribution release. Remove stale versioned enablement through the distribution’s Apache module-management mechanism rather than editing a generated file and leaving duplicate links behind. Reinstall the matching libapache2-mod-php integration package when the shared object or its package-managed configuration is genuinely missing. Run apache2ctl configtest again after every change.

A filename containing an older PHP version is especially significant after an upgrade. It can mean that Apache still points at the previous shared object even though the newer interpreter is present. Do not solve that mismatch by renaming a library or creating a hand-written link; the module and its configuration must come from a compatible package set.
Unknown PHP directive
Invalid command, Unknown directive, or a directive that Apache says is not recognized indicates that the module defining that directive is not loaded in this Apache instance. The directive may belong to a removed PHP version, a different SAPI, or a configuration fragment copied from another server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen the file and line named by configtest. Verify that the intended PHP integration is actually enabled. If the directive is no longer supported by the installed PHP or Apache module, remove it or replace it with the configuration supported by the current integration. Do not silence the error by commenting out unrelated lines; preserve only settings required by the installed version.
Duplicate module loading
An error such as Module php... already loaded means two configuration files attempt to load the same module. One may be a package-managed file while the other was manually copied into the Apache configuration.
On Debian or Ubuntu, list the module inventory:
apache2ctl -M
Inspect the enabled php*.load and php*.conf files under /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/. Keep one consistent, package-managed module load and disable the manual duplicate. On RHEL, inspect both /etc/httpd/conf.d/ and /etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/ for repeated PHP module declarations; with RHEL 9’s default FPM design, remove obsolete mod_php declarations instead of adding another one.
Incompatible Apache/PHP module ABI
A module compiled for an incompatible Apache or PHP application-binary interface can fail even when the file exists. Treat an ABI-related load error as a packaging mismatch: stop combining a copied module from another release with the distribution’s current Apache and PHP packages. Restore a matching distribution integration package or use the supported FPM path, then rerun the syntax test.

ABI problems are runtime compatibility failures, not ordinary spelling mistakes. Repeatedly editing the LoadModule path may hide the real mismatch while making future package updates harder. Keep one coherent source of Apache, PHP, and the integration module.
Ubuntu and Debian: restore the module-based setup
Canonical’s Ubuntu Server guidance installs PHP with Apache’s integration package and then restarts Apache after the module is enabled:

sudo apt install php libapache2-mod-php
After installation, check for the versioned files in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/, such as php8.*.conf and php8.*.load. The exact version pattern depends on the PHP release available for your Ubuntu or Debian system. The important check is that the enabled files refer to the installed module rather than an older version.
- Record the failure with
sudo systemctl status apache2 --no-pager -landsudo journalctl -u apache2 -b --no-pager. - Run
sudo apache2ctl configtest. - Open the file and line reported by the test; correct stale
LoadModulepaths, unknown directives, or duplicate enablement. - Review the loaded-module list with
apache2ctl -Mand inspect/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php*.loadand/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php*.conf. - Run the configuration test again until it returns
Syntax OK. - Restart Apache with
sudo systemctl restart apache2.service.
If the restart still fails after a clean syntax test, move to the startup and port checks below; the problem is no longer a simple Apache configuration parse error. If a package-managed file is missing, reinstall the matching integration package instead of reconstructing the module configuration manually.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →RHEL 9: use PHP-FPM, not a removed mod_php module
RHEL 9 documents PHP-FPM as Apache’s default PHP integration. The relevant files are /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf, /etc/php-fpm.conf, and /etc/php-fpm.d/www.conf. PHP requests must be mapped to FPM through the Apache configuration, and the FPM service must itself start successfully.
- Capture the Apache failure with
sudo systemctl status httpd --no-pager -landsudo journalctl -u httpd -b --no-pager. - Check Apache syntax with
sudo apachectl configtest. - Inspect
/etc/httpd/conf.d/and/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/for obsoletemod_phpor duplicate PHP declarations. - Check the FPM configuration and service output with
sudo systemctl status php-fpmandsudo journalctl -u php-fpm -b. - Start or restart PHP-FPM and confirm it succeeds before restarting Apache:
sudo systemctl start php-fpm, followed bysudo systemctl restart httpd. - Once both services work, enable them at boot if that is required for the server:
sudo systemctl enable httpd php-fpm.
An FPM failure can involve its pool configuration, socket, permissions, or a dependency. Fix the first error reported by the php-fpm journal, then test Apache again. Adding an Apache module will not repair an FPM socket or pool problem.
Keep the service names straight: restarting httpd does not start a failed php-fpm unit, and starting FPM does not repair an Apache syntax error. Treat each status and journal as a separate diagnostic stream, then verify the handoff with an actual PHP request.
If syntax is valid but Apache still will not start
Syntax OK proves that Apache can parse its configuration; it does not prove that startup can bind ports, open every file, satisfy dependencies, or initialize every runtime component. Use the first fatal startup message from the service journal and Apache’s ErrorLog.
Port already in use
For an error such as Unable to bind to Port ..., identify the process listening on the relevant TCP port:
sudo ss -ltnp
Another Apache instance, a different web server, a development service, or an incorrectly duplicated Listen assignment may own the port. Stop or reconfigure the conflicting service, or correct the Apache listener assignment, then rerun configtest and retry the restart. Apache’s startup documentation also notes that insufficient privilege can produce a bind failure, so check the service’s effective permissions when no competing listener appears.

Permissions and inaccessible paths
A syntax-valid configuration can still fail when the daemon cannot read a certificate, log directory, socket, document root, or included file at startup. Use the exact path in the journal or ErrorLog to check ownership and access. Correct the underlying permission or path; do not grant broad write access to the entire web root as a workaround.
Dependency or runtime failure
If systemd reports a dependency failure, inspect the dependent unit named in the status output. For RHEL’s PHP-FPM design, check php-fpm.service independently. A failed FPM pool or socket must be repaired before Apache can serve PHP through it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Read the Apache ErrorLog
Apache writes fatal startup details to the console or configured ErrorLog. The service journal may show the same event with systemd context, while the ErrorLog can identify the exact virtual host, module, path, or listener that failed. Focus on the earliest fatal entry rather than repeated stop notifications.
When several messages appear, work from the first failure forward: an inaccessible include can trigger a module error, and a failed FPM socket can produce later request-handling errors. Once the earliest cause is corrected, rerun the syntax test and restart before investigating messages that depended on it.
Verify PHP over HTTP, then remove the diagnostic page
A successful service restart is not proof that PHP requests are being handled. The web server might return a download or display PHP source if the module or FPM mapping is not active.
- Create a temporary file in the Apache document root, for example
/var/www/html/phpinfo.php, containing exactly<?php phpinfo(); ?>. - Request the page locally through the site URL, such as
http://localhost/phpinfo.php, using the same virtual host and protocol that clients use. - Confirm that the page renders PHP information rather than downloading the file or showing its source. Check the reported PHP version and SAPI: an Ubuntu module setup should show the Apache handler, while an FPM setup should show the expected FPM/FastCGI SAPI.
- Remove the file immediately after verification:
sudo rm /var/www/html/phpinfo.php.
A publicly reachable phpinfo() page exposes detailed version, path, environment, and module information. It is a diagnostic artifact, not a production endpoint. If the page downloads or displays source, stop treating the restart as complete: revisit the module enablement or FPM proxy mapping, then repeat the HTTP test after the correction.
Use the failure message to choose the next action
| Observed message or behavior | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Syntax error on line ... |
Apache or PHP configuration | Open the named file and line, correct or remove the invalid directive, then rerun configtest. |
Cannot load ... libphp*.so |
Stale or missing PHP module | Install the matching distribution integration package and remove stale versioned enablement. |
Module php... already loaded |
Duplicate module configuration | Keep one package-managed module load and disable manual duplicates. |
Unable to bind to Port ... |
Listener collision or privilege problem | Run sudo ss -ltnp, stop or reconfigure the conflicting service, and retry. |
php-fpm.service failed |
FPM configuration, socket, permissions, or dependency | Run systemctl status php-fpm and journalctl -u php-fpm -b; fix the first reported error, then restart httpd. |
Restart succeeds but a .php file downloads or shows source |
Handler or FPM mapping is inactive | Confirm the correct PHP module or FPM proxy configuration and verify with a temporary phpinfo() page. |
What not to do while troubleshooting
- Do not repeatedly restart Apache while
configtestreports an error; each attempt produces noise without fixing the cause. - Do not copy a PHP module from another machine or release merely because its filename appears in an error. Apache and PHP must use a compatible ABI.
- Do not mix Ubuntu/Debian
mods-enabledinstructions with RHEL’s FPM layout. The service names, module model, and configuration directories differ. - Do not add
mod_phpdirectives to a RHEL 9 installation that is designed for PHP-FPM; the module supplied for that use has been removed. - Do not leave
phpinfo.phpon a production or internet-facing document root. - Do not edit several configuration trees at once without recording which file changed. A package-managed enablement, a manually copied fragment, and an FPM pool file can produce similar-looking symptoms but require different fixes.
A reliable recovery sequence
For most post-installation failures, the shortest safe path is:
- Record the correct service status and journal output for
apache2orhttpd. - Run the platform-appropriate
apachectl configtestcommand and read the exact file and line. - Remove stale versioned PHP loads, unknown directives, duplicate module declarations, or incompatible copied modules.
- On Debian or Ubuntu, verify the
libapache2-mod-phpfiles under/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/. On RHEL 9, verify the FPM configuration and service instead of trying to restoremod_php. - Repeat the syntax test until it prints
Syntax OK. - Restart the appropriate service:
sudo systemctl restart apache2.serviceorsudo systemctl restart httpd. Startphp-fpmsuccessfully first when using RHEL’s FPM arrangement. - If startup still fails, investigate the first journal or ErrorLog fatal message, especially port binding, permissions, and dependencies.
- Verify an actual PHP request with a temporary
phpinfo()page and delete that page immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does systemd say only that the control process exited with an error code?
That line is a summary from systemd, not the Apache diagnosis. Read the full service status and the boot journal for the first fatal message, including its file, line, module, or dependent service.

Should I run apachectl configtest before every restart?
Run the platform-appropriate explicit test whenever configuration changed or a restart failed. Apache also checks configuration during restart, but a separate test isolates syntax errors before changing service state. Continue only when it prints Syntax OK.
What is the difference between Ubuntu’s PHP module and RHEL 9’s PHP-FPM setup?
Ubuntu and Debian commonly use the libapache2-mod-php Apache module. RHEL 9 runs PHP through FastCGI Process Manager by default, with separate httpd and php-fpm services. RHEL 9 removed the supplied mod_php module, so copying an old module-loading tutorial is not the fix.
Why does Apache report that it cannot load libphp.so after a PHP update?
Apache still references a missing, moved, stale, or incompatible shared object. Inspect the enabled versioned PHP files, remove stale package enablement, and install the matching distribution integration package. Do not rename or copy a library from another release.
Apache passes configtest but still will not start. What should I check?
A clean syntax test does not rule out a port collision, insufficient privilege, inaccessible certificate or log path, dependency failure, or runtime initialization error. Read the first fatal journal and ErrorLog entry, then use sudo ss -ltnp for bind errors and check php-fpm independently on RHEL.
How can I tell whether PHP is actually working after Apache starts?
Create a temporary phpinfo() file in the document root, request it through the same virtual host clients use, and confirm the expected PHP version and SAPI. If PHP downloads or appears as source, the handler or FPM mapping is not active. Delete the file immediately after testing.
Is it safe to leave phpinfo.php on the server?
No. It exposes detailed PHP version, paths, environment, and module information. Use it only as a temporary diagnostic page and remove it as soon as the HTTP check succeeds.
The Bottom Line
Capture the real error, run the platform-specific configtest, and fix the named file or service before restarting. Use the Debian/Ubuntu module model or RHEL 9’s PHP-FPM model consistently, then investigate ports, permissions, dependencies, and ErrorLog entries if syntax is valid. Finish by testing a real PHP request and deleting the temporary phpinfo() page.
