Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA GeForce RTX 3080 is far above Apex Legends’ published minimum GPU requirement, so crashes do not automatically mean the card is incompatible or failing. The best first approach is to identify whether Apex alone is closing, the graphics driver is resetting, or Windows is becoming unstable, then test fixes in a controlled order: check for a game-side issue, repair the installation, clean-install or roll back the NVIDIA driver, disable tuning and overlays, and investigate Windows or hardware only if the simpler tests do not help.
EA lists a GTX 950 or equivalent as Apex’s minimum GPU; that establishes the game’s baseline, not a guarantee that every PC configuration will be stable. EA’s PC requirements and NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 specifications are useful reference points. Board-partner RTX 3080 cards can differ in clocks, power limits, cooling, and memory configuration.
Identify what is actually crashing
Before changing settings, note when the failure happens and what the PC does. A crash to desktop is different from a display-driver reset or a full system crash, and the distinction determines which fixes are worth trying.
| What you see | What it suggests and where to start |
|---|---|
| Apex closes before the menu or during a match | Start with game-file repair, driver cleanup, overlays, and stock GPU settings. |
Apex_crash.txt or r5apex.exe |
Repair the game files first. EA associates these errors with game-installation troubleshooting; the error name alone does not identify the root cause. EA’s Apex error-code guidance |
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG or DEVICE_REMOVED |
Investigate the rendering path: driver, GPU tuning, overlays, graphics load, temperatures, and power. These errors do not prove the GPU is defective. |
| Black screen, but sound continues | Test for a display or driver hang. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to ask Windows to reset the graphics driver; the screen may flicker or beep. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance |
| Blue screen or the whole PC reboots | Treat this as system instability, not just an Apex setting. Check whether other games fail, then investigate RAM, CPU and GPU stability, temperature, and power delivery. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat error, including error 30005 | Repair Apex files and follow the error-specific anti-cheat steps below; do not disable or bypass anti-cheat. |
Use the same test after each change—for example, launch the game and repeat the activity that usually triggers the crash. If several games fail, prioritize system-wide causes. If only Apex fails, keep the focus on the game, its driver path, overlays, and anti-cheat.

Check for an outage or a recent change
Before reinstalling software, check the Apex support hub, official @PlayApex updates, and EA forums for reports that match the timing of your problem. A widespread service or game issue will not be fixed by changing a local driver. EA notes that some error-code problems may need a game-side fix. EA error codes
Write down when the crashes began and whether the change immediately followed an Apex patch, Windows update, NVIDIA driver update, BIOS update, or new overlay or monitoring utility. Timing is useful evidence, but it is not proof that the last update caused the crash.
Try the low-risk fixes first
Restart and let every update finish
- Exit Apex, then close Steam or the EA app.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the launcher and wait for any Apex update to finish before pressing Play. EA notes that Steam can still be downloading an update in the background. EA error codes
- Check Windows Update and note your installed NVIDIA driver version. Do not rely on an old article’s driver number; find the current release through NVIDIA’s driver download page or the GeForce Game Ready driver page.
Repair the installation in the launcher you use
Choose one route, based on where Apex is installed:
- EA app: Open Library, find Apex Legends, select the Manage icon, then choose Repair. Wait for the scan and replacement to finish, restart the app, and test the game.
- Steam: Open Library, right-click Apex Legends, select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to reacquire missing or damaged files. Steam Apex technical support

Clean-install the NVIDIA driver—or test a rollback
A driver cleanup is a high-value test when crashes began after a graphics-driver update, the PC has switched GPUs, the driver has been updated repeatedly without cleanup, or other games show display-driver failures. EA recommends updating or clean-installing graphics drivers when troubleshooting PC graphics problems. EA graphics troubleshooting

- Download the appropriate Game Ready Driver for the RTX 3080 from NVIDIA.
- Close Apex, the launcher, browsers, and monitoring utilities.
- Run the NVIDIA installer. If it offers installation choices, select the custom installation path and the clean-install option.
- Restart Windows and test Apex with the GPU at stock settings before restoring overlays or tuning.
If crashes started immediately after a driver update, use NVIDIA’s driver search to test the previous known-good certified driver. Treat rollback as a diagnostic test, not a permanent rule that older drivers are better. Change only the driver version, record which version you tested, and compare the result. NVIDIA describes beta drivers as preview software that may contain significant issues, so use a recommended or certified release when stability is the priority. GeForce Game Ready drivers
NVIDIA’s clean-install option is the first step; a third-party removal utility such as DDU is not required for every RTX 3080 owner. Consider such tools only as an advanced fallback, obtain them from their legitimate developer, and use care if removing drivers in Safe Mode.
Remove overclocks and disable overlays
Test the GPU at stock settings
Temporarily restore the RTX 3080’s default core and memory clocks, voltage, power limit, fan profile, and manufacturer performance mode. If the PC also fails in other games, return CPU and RAM tuning to stock as a separate test. A workload can expose marginal tuning that appears stable elsewhere; that possibility does not establish that Apex is at fault.
Do not increase voltage or edit Windows timeout-detection registry values as an early fix. Such changes can add heat or obscure a driver hang without addressing its cause.
Turn off overlays and hooks temporarily
Disable overlays and recording or monitoring features for a test, including NVIDIA, Steam, EA, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, and MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner on-screen displays. If you use RGB, motherboard monitoring, capture, virtualization, or third-party frame-limiting software, close those utilities too. Re-enable items one at a time after testing; if crashes return after a particular feature is restored, you have a useful lead.

EA recommends closing background applications and using a Windows clean boot to isolate software conflicts. EA crash and freeze troubleshooting
Reduce rendering load while testing
Temporarily cap FPS below your monitor’s maximum refresh rate, enable V-Sync if needed, and lower demanding settings such as the texture streaming budget. Test at the monitor’s native resolution and change only a small group of settings at a time. EA lists frame-rate capping and V-Sync among its crash and freeze troubleshooting measures. EA crash and freeze troubleshooting
A cap is a stability test, not proof that the card cannot handle Apex. It can reduce rendering load, heat, and power spikes; once the game is stable, raise the cap gradually and test again. Avoid copying random launch commands from old forum posts: commands can become obsolete or vary by launcher, and an unsupported command adds another variable.
Use a clean boot to find conflicting software
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping determine whether background software is interfering. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure:
- Sign in as an administrator and open System Configuration.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining non-Microsoft services.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart Windows and test Apex.
- If the game is stable, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict returns; then narrow down the responsible program.
- Restore normal startup afterward.
Do not leave Windows in a clean-boot state as a permanent gaming setup unless you intentionally want those services and startup items disabled.

Follow the error-specific anti-cheat steps
If the error explicitly names Easy Anti-Cheat, repair Apex’s files first and restart Windows. EA lists an error-specific procedure for certain anti-cheat failures that involves the Easy Anti-Cheat .sys file in C:Program Files (x86)EasyAntiCheat and then restarting the PC. Follow EA’s current instructions for your error rather than deleting files as a general crash remedy. EA Apex error-code guidance

Distinguish a display hang from a game exit
If the display goes blank or becomes unresponsive, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows may beep or briefly flicker as it resets the graphics driver. If the display returns, note that recovery as evidence of a display-driver event; it does not identify why the event occurred. Microsoft blank-screen troubleshooting
For a black screen while game audio continues, also test Alt-Tab, borderless-window mode, overlays disabled, a clean driver installation, and—if available—a different display cable or monitor input. These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes.
Record conditions under load
Note GPU and CPU temperatures, GPU hotspot temperature if your monitoring software reports it, clock behavior, power draw, and whether the failure occurs during a demanding scene. Do not apply one universal temperature threshold: RTX 3080 board models, coolers, BIOS settings, ambient conditions, and monitoring tools differ.

Best Value
Check that the card is fully seated, its required PCIe power connectors are connected correctly, display cables are secure, and airflow is not restricted. Compare the PSU against the recommendation for your exact card model. If the whole PC reboots under load, include power delivery and system stability in the investigation.
Compare with other demanding games
- Only Apex crashes: Continue with game files, driver, overlay, settings, and anti-cheat tests.
- Several games crash or show artifacts: Test GPU, RAM, and CPU stability and check temperatures and power before concluding the GPU has failed.
- Crashes, driver resets, or reboots persist at stock settings in multiple games: Hardware diagnosis or service from the card’s manufacturer becomes more reasonable than replacing the GPU based on Apex alone.
Reinstall Apex only after the targeted tests
Reinstalling is reasonable if file repair repeatedly finds damage, r5apex.exe errors continue, anti-cheat files remain damaged, or the game still fails before the menu after driver cleanup, stock settings, and a clean-boot test. EA includes reinstalling Apex—and, where necessary, the EA app—in its escalation guidance. EA crash and freeze troubleshooting
Game progress is tied to your account rather than erased merely by reinstalling, though local settings or configuration files may need to be recreated. EA Apex error codes
