Do not start by reinstalling Apex Legends or changing DNS. First determine whether the problem is network lag, local FPS or frametime stutter, or an Apex server issue. In Apex, open Settings → Gameplay → Performance Display, then check FPS, latency, and packet loss while the problem occurs. As a quick triage, check Apex server reports, select the nearest data center, and test with Ethernet.
A stable 60 FPS with 5% packet loss is a network problem. A choppy 45 FPS with 0% packet loss is primarily a rendering or system problem. They can feel similar, but the fixes are different.

Identify the type of Apex lag first
| What you notice | Likely cause | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber-banding, teleporting, delayed actions, or red network icons | Latency, jitter, or packet loss | Check Performance Display |
| Smooth-looking movement but delayed combat or hit registration | Network latency or server simulation | Compare latency and packet loss |
| Visible hitching, low FPS, or freezes when turning or fighting | GPU, CPU, driver, thermal, overlay, or game-file issue | Watch FPS and frametimes |
| The entire match moves in slow motion for multiple players | Server-side performance problem | Check other players, data centers, and official reports |
| Stutter after a particular event, such as a squad wipe | Game or launcher-specific regression | Check recent updates and compare launcher behavior |
EA describes under 50 ms ping as particularly good, under 100 ms as generally playable, and ping above 100 ms as a point where lag may begin. These are practical guidelines rather than guarantees. Packet loss should be as close to 0% as possible. EA’s Apex ping and packet-loss guide explains the in-game indicators.

Check Apex servers and data centers
Before changing your PC or home network, check the EA troubleshooting guidance, the official @PlayApex account, and current service-status information. EA specifically recommends checking for server problems when all data centers show high ping or packet loss.
To select a data center:
- Start Apex Legends.
- At the launch screen, do not select Continue.
- Select Data Center in the bottom-left corner.
- Choose the center closest to your physical location.
The nearest center is normally the correct choice because a shorter route usually means lower latency. However, compare the next-closest center if the nearest one is clearly reporting abnormal ping or packet loss. Do not permanently choose a distant region simply because its displayed number looks temporarily lower.
Fix Apex packet loss and high ping
1. Test Ethernet
Connect the PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet, temporarily disable Wi-Fi on the device, and play several matches or test in the Firing Range. Compare the Performance Display readings with Wi-Fi.

2. Stop competing network traffic
Pause downloads, game updates, cloud backups, video streams, torrents, and large uploads. Close unnecessary launchers and sync tools on the gaming device. Other people using the connection can also cause latency spikes, particularly when an upload is saturated.
3. Restart the network correctly
- Exit Apex.
- Power off the modem and router.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Turn on the modem and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn on the router.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Test Apex again.
EA recommends restarting the router and platform for connection errors including code:net, code:leaf, and code:clock. See the EA error-code guide for error-specific advice.
4. Try another network
Where practical, test a phone hotspot or another wired connection briefly. If Apex works on the alternate network, the likely problem is your router, Wi-Fi, ISP route, or local congestion. If both networks show the same Apex-only problem, server or game-specific causes become more likely. A hotspot is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a suitable permanent gaming connection.

- Update the game, Windows, and GPU driver. Wait for Steam or the EA App to finish downloading updates before launching Apex.
- Repair the installation. In the EA App, open Library, find Apex Legends, select the Manage icon, and choose Repair. In Steam, use the game’s built-in Verify integrity of game files option; wording can vary with the current Steam client.
- Disable overlays temporarily. Test with Steam, EA App, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA, and AMD recording overlays disabled.
- Close background software. Temporarily exit browsers, cloud-sync clients, RGB utilities, launchers, and hardware-monitoring tools.
- Reduce graphics load. Lower texture streaming budget if VRAM is close to its limit. Then reduce shadows, volumetric effects, effects detail, and model detail.
- Stabilize the frame rate. Cap FPS to a value the system can sustain consistently instead of leaving it unlimited. There is no universally correct cap; the best value depends on the GPU, CPU, monitor, driver, and game settings.
- Check temperatures and utilization. Thermal throttling, CPU saturation, GPU saturation, exhausted VRAM, unstable overclocks, undervolts, or memory profiles can all cause frametime spikes.
A high average FPS does not guarantee smooth play. Brief frametime spikes can produce visible hitching even when the FPS counter appears healthy. If stutter began immediately after a GPU-driver update, try a clean driver installation or a known-stable previous driver.
EA App and Steam
Do not launch Apex simultaneously through the EA App and Steam with the same linked account; EA warns this can cause progression issues. Respawn has also reported Steam as a temporary workaround for some PC stutter or FPS-drop cases tied to an investigated issue. That does not establish that Steam is universally better than the EA App or that switching launchers fixes networking.
Fix Apex lag and stutter on consoles
- Fully close Apex instead of resuming it from standby or Quick Resume.
- Restart the PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.
- Install pending game and system updates.
- Use Ethernet where supported and practical.
- Check the data center from the launch screen.
- Test another nearby data center if the closest one is clearly degraded.
- Do not change several console or network settings at once; test each change.
On PlayStation, distinguish an ordinary connection problem from a specific UI or crash error. EA lists ui/userinfo.nut as a PlayStation-specific issue and gives changing the console language to English (United Kingdom) as a temporary workaround. That workaround is not a general packet-loss or lag fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check the local gateway
ipconfig
Find Default Gateway, then replace the address below with the one shown on your system:
ping -t 192.168.1.1
Stop with Ctrl+C. Stable replies to the router but packet loss in Apex suggests the problem may be beyond your home network. Packet loss or large spikes to the router points toward Wi-Fi, Ethernet cabling, router hardware, or local network load.
Test general internet reachability
ping -t 1.1.1.1
This does not reproduce Apex’s server route. A failed ping alone is not proof that the internet is down because some networks deprioritize or block ICMP traffic.
Trace a general route
tracert 1.1.1.1
This traces a route to Cloudflare, not necessarily to the Apex server. Treat it as a broad routing clue, not an Apex-specific diagnosis.

Flush DNS only for name-resolution problems
ipconfig /flushdns
Flushing DNS can help with lookup or initial-connection problems, but normally will not repair packet loss during an active match.
Reset Winsock and TCP/IP as a later step
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
Restart Windows afterward. This resets network components and is not a first-line solution for server-side lag. Note any custom network settings before using it so you can restore them if needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fixes that often do not work
- Changing DNS: It may affect name resolution, but rarely fixes in-match packet loss.
- Reinstalling Apex: It can replace damaged files, but cannot fix a bad ISP route, Wi-Fi congestion, thermal throttling, or an Apex outage.
- Using a VPN or route optimizer: It may change an ISP’s route or peering path and occasionally help, but it can increase ping, add complexity and cost, and is not a universal fix.
- Registry edits and random launch options: Avoid unverified tweaks until the actual symptom has been measured.
- Buying faster internet: More bandwidth does not automatically reduce latency or packet loss.
- Changing every graphics setting at once: This makes it impossible to identify which change helped and can create new performance problems.
When Apex’s servers are probably responsible
Suspect a server or infrastructure issue when several data centers show abnormal readings, friends in different locations report the same problem, other games work normally, or matches enter slow motion without a corresponding local FPS collapse.
Respawn reported in February 2026 that a server bottleneck caused some AWS machine CPUs to reach 100%, producing FPS drops and slow-motion matches. The studio said server optimizations substantially reduced those incidents, but that was not a guarantee that every future server-performance problem was eliminated. The example matters because it demonstrates that a match can feel like a hardware failure even when the cause is server-side.
Respawn also reported in June 2026 that it fixed a squad-wipe-related stutter affecting EA App players while continuing to investigate lowered FPS. If the issue happens only after a particular event or update, record the pattern and check official announcements rather than immediately replacing hardware.
Community posts can reveal that players are seeing similar symptoms, but geographically mixed reports are anecdotal and do not independently confirm a global outage. Use official EA or Respawn channels to verify a current incident.
When to contact support
Contact your ISP when packet loss or latency spikes appear in gateway and general-network tests, affect other games, or disappear on another connection. Contact EA when the issue is limited to Apex, specific data centers, or a known game error. For console hardware, account, or platform services, use the relevant PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support channel. EA’s Apex FAQ explains platform support routing.
