How to Fix ASUS ROG Ally Buttons Not Working

Check whether the failure is app-specific, then review Command Center mode and Armoury Crate SE mappings before trying calibration, updates, or service.

If buttons on your ASUS ROG Ally stop responding, first check whether the problem happens everywhere or only in one app or control mode. Then review Command Center mode and button mappings, calibrate an affected stick or trigger, and install available ASUS updates. If the same control still fails across apps and modes, contact ASUS support before opening the device or attempting a data-erasing recovery.

1. Identify which controls fail and where

Note the affected controls—face buttons, bumpers, triggers, sticks, or the rear buttons—and test them in more than one place, such as Windows, Armoury Crate SE, Steam, and another game. Record whether the issue is constant or intermittent, limited to one game or screen, or began after a software or settings change. A control that works in one context but not another may indicate a mode or mapping issue; that pattern alone does not prove the cause.

2. Check control mode and button mappings

Open Command Center and confirm the mode you intend to use. Armoury Crate SE offers Gamepad Mode and Desktop Mode, and allows mappings to be customized globally and in game profiles. Check the relevant profile to see whether the affected button was reassigned or disabled.

Desktop use can depend on the selected mode: ASUS documents using the Ally gamepad as a mouse on the Windows desktop. If Armoury Crate SE has been uninstalled and the joystick or buttons are unavailable on the desktop, use the touchscreen to download and reinstall Armoury Crate SE from the ASUS product support site.

For Steam, distinguish desktop navigation from Big Picture Mode

ASUS says the joysticks and buttons work in Steam Big Picture Mode. For navigation in Steam’s desktop interface, open Command Center and manually select Desktop Mode so the controls can act as a mouse. See ASUS’s Steam controls FAQ.

3. Calibrate an affected stick or trigger

In Armoury Crate SE, open the Calibration area and follow the on-screen flow for the affected left or right stick, trigger, or gyro. Calibration is for those analog inputs; it is not a fix for an unresponsive face button.

Armoury Crate SE also provides stick dead-zone, outer-threshold, response-curve, and anti-deadzone settings, along with trigger sensitivity controls. A dead zone determines how far a stick must move before input registers. Adjusting these settings can change responsiveness, but cannot resolve a physically stuck button.

4. Check for ASUS driver and firmware updates

Use Armoury Crate SE’s Update Center to check for relevant drivers or firmware. If you need driver or BIOS resources, select the support page for your exact ROG Ally model rather than relying on a package intended for another generation. ASUS’s support site provides model-specific resources; package availability and versions can change.

5. Contact ASUS if a control still fails across apps

If the same control remains unresponsive in multiple apps and modes after you have checked mappings and installed available ASUS updates, contact ASUS support about service and warranty options for your exact model and region. Software checks cannot determine whether an individual Ally has a hardware fault.

Do not assume service instructions apply across every generation. ASUS lists a customer self-repair service manual for the 2023 ROG Ally, model RC71L. Confirm your model and review warranty implications before opening the device: ASUS ROG support and service resources.

Use Cloud Recovery only as a later, data-risking option

Cloud Recovery restores the OS storage to its original state and erases its data, according to ASUS. It is not a sensible first response to one suspect button. If you consider it after less disruptive checks, back up first; ASUS advises contacting a service center if important data has not been backed up or recovery cannot be completed. See ASUS Cloud Recovery guidance.
