How to Fix Audio and Video Going Out of Sync in Pre-Recorded YouTube Streams

Find where audio and video first go out of sync, then troubleshoot the source, encoder, or live delivery with a realistic test.

Find where the mismatch first appears: in the original file, the encoder’s output, or the YouTube stream. That tells you which part of the workflow to troubleshoot. A “pre-recorded YouTube stream” usually means a video file played through an encoder such as OBS into a YouTube Live event; it is different from uploading a regular YouTube video.

First, locate where the sync problem starts

Compare the same moment in the source file, any local recording or archive, the encoder preview, and the viewer-facing stream or replay. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s audio and video quality and examining the local archive file. The first version that looks or sounds wrong is your strongest clue about where to investigate.

  • The source file is already out of sync: The issue is present before the live-streaming setup. Check the file and how it was prepared or selected as the playback source.
  • The source is fine, but the encoder preview or local archive is not: Investigate the local production path, including media sources, audio routing, encoder diagnostics, and system load.
  • The source, preview, and local archive are healthy, but viewers hear or see a mismatch: Check stream health and the outbound connection. A healthy preview does not prove that YouTube itself is at fault.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says, “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream

Compare the symptom and the health indicators

Note whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the mismatch seems to grow during playback. Constant offset and progressive drift are useful observations to report and compare across the source, preview, archive, and delivered stream. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a particular offset correction or identify drift by a specific cause, so do not assume that one setting change will fix either symptom.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also check whether the encoder or connection shows errors at the same time. YouTube advises reviewing encoder errors and CPU load. OBS notes that increasing dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. These are clues about performance or delivery, not proof that they caused every lip-sync problem.

If the source, preview, or local archive is wrong

  1. Check the source itself. Play the original video outside the live setup and compare a recognizable spoken line or sound with a visible action. If the mismatch is there too, troubleshoot the media file or its preparation before changing stream settings.
  2. Check media and audio routing. Confirm that the encoder is playing the intended file and that its audio is routed as expected. Compare the encoder preview with the local archive to see whether the issue appears before or during encoding.
  3. Review encoder diagnostics. Use the latest version of your encoder, check its error messages, and inspect CPU load. YouTube suggests trying a different encoder as a diagnostic when the local output has problems; that can help isolate the path, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
  4. Investigate resource load only when indicators point to it. If rendering or encoding performance is impaired, reduce scene or rendering load and retest. OBS’s performance guidance discusses GPU overload and bottlenecks as possible causes of encoding problems; this is a conditional branch, not a universal explanation for sync faults.

If the encoder preview is healthy but the live delivery is not

  1. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Look for warnings or configuration and quality statuses indicating that video delivery is insufficient for smooth streaming.
  2. Check the outbound connection. Test the internet connection used by the encoder and watch for dropped frames or other connection indicators. If YouTube’s guidance and your local checks point to a connection issue, contact your internet provider.
  3. Compare local and viewer-facing playback again. Check the same moment in the local archive and the live stream or replay. If only delivered playback is affected, the problem is downstream of the healthy local output; that alone does not establish whether the cause is the network, configuration, or platform delivery.

Check audio format and keyframe recommendations

Confirm that your encoder settings match the stream format you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. YouTube also recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

These are platform recommendations, not a guaranteed cure for an audio/video timing fault. Change settings only when they do not match the intended format, then test the complete path again. Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Test the complete stream before the event

Run a realistic test that includes speech or other audio and visible movement similar to the planned stream. Compare the source, encoder preview, local archive if available, and viewer-facing playback, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Common sync-troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing an offset before locating the fault: An adjustment in the wrong part of the chain can obscure the diagnosis or make a healthy version worse. First establish where the mismatch appears.
  • Treating dropped frames as proof of a sync cause: They can point to connection trouble or an unsustainable bitrate, but do not automatically explain an audio/video timing error.
  • Changing sample rate as a universal fix: Match YouTube’s documented recommendations to the audio format you intend to use, then test; no single sample rate is established as a cure for every sync problem.
  • Assuming YouTube repairs an uploaded video: The cited guidance concerns live-stream encoding and delivery. It does not establish that YouTube automatically creates or repairs sync problems in ordinary uploaded videos.
