A TZ=Asia/Kolkata line in a crontab changes the command’s environment; it does not change when conventional Debian cron launches the job. The script also needs authorized YouTube Data API access, because cron alone cannot edit a playlist.
1. Check the Debian clock and cron implementation
Start by checking the host’s current time and timezone:
timedatectl status
date
Confirm which cron package and version the server uses before relying on implementation-specific timezone behavior. Debian’s trixie cron manual explains the conventional cron caveat, but other schedulers or cron implementations may behave differently. The Debian manual states: “Even if a user specifies the TZ environment variable in his crontab this will affect only the commands executed in the crontab, not the execution of the crontab tasks themselves.” See the Debian crontab manual.
2. Set the server timezone to IST
If the server can use IST as its system timezone, configure it administratively. First, you can check that the zone is available:

timedatectl list-timezones | grep '^Asia/Kolkata$'
Then set it and verify the result:
sudo timedatectl set-timezone Asia/Kolkata
timedatectl status
date
Debian documents timedatectl list-timezones and timedatectl set-timezone for listing and setting timezones. Debian Reference also documents sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata as an alternative configuration route. Consult the Debian timedatectl manual and Debian Reference.
A system timezone change can affect other scheduled jobs and services on the same host. If those must retain a different timezone, do not assume that a crontab-level TZ setting will move the trigger time. Confirm the installed scheduler’s documented support for per-job timezones, or use a carefully designed wrapper that checks IST before running the task. Test such a wrapper for missed or duplicate runs and clock changes; Debian’s cron manual recommends checking date and time in the child process when the desired schedule cannot be represented directly.
3. Define what “playlist rotation” should do
“Rotate” is not one YouTube API operation. Decide the intended end state before writing the script:

- Reorder: move an existing video to another position.
- Add: insert a video into the playlist.
- Remove: delete an old playlist item.
- Replace or rebuild: combine removals, inserts, and possibly position updates to produce a particular ordered list.
The YouTube Data API manages playlist items. playlistItems.list reads them; playlistItems.insert adds one; playlistItems.update can change an item’s position; and playlistItems.delete removes one. Writes require suitable OAuth authorization. Review the YouTube Data API playlistItems reference and ensure the authenticated account is allowed to manage the target playlist.
For a reorder, keep the right IDs and ordering mode
Store the playlist ID, video IDs, and playlist-item IDs returned by the API. An update targets a playlist item and sets snippet.position to a zero-based position. YouTube documents the manualSortRequired error when a position update is attempted for a playlist that is not set to manual ordering. Some special playlists do not support insert or update operations, so check that the target playlist supports the action before scheduling it.
Plan for retries and partial failures
Decide how the script should handle an empty playlist, videos that are missing or private, duplicate run attempts, API errors, and a failure partway through a multi-step change. Make the operation idempotent where possible: check the current playlist state before writing, so a retry does not add the same item twice or reverse a reorder that already succeeded. YouTube provides discrete list, insert, update, and delete operations; it does not provide a built-in cron rotation feature.

4. Authorize the script to edit the playlist
Use the YouTube Data API with OAuth authorization appropriate to the account and playlist. Configure credentials so they are available to the Linux user that will run the job, and protect them from other users on the host. There is no single credential-storage design that fits every deployment; make sure the scheduled process can read its credentials without exposing secrets in the crontab or log.
Test the script manually as the same Unix user that will own the cron job. Confirm it can read the playlist and perform the intended action before automating it. The API reference describes the playlist item operations and authorization requirements.

5. Add the scheduled job to the user’s crontab
Open the crontab for the Linux user whose credentials and files the script uses:

crontab -e
To run a script every day at 06:15 in the configured system timezone, add:
15 6 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.py >> /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.log 2>&1
The schedule uses five fields: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. In this example, 15 6 * * * means 06:15 every day. Because the host timezone was set to Asia/Kolkata, conventional Debian cron interprets that time as IST. Replace the time, Python path, account directory, script path, and log path with the values used on your server. Debian’s Handbook section on cron and at covers crontab syntax and common schedule shorthands.
Use absolute paths: cron does not necessarily start with the working directory or environment you get in an interactive shell. The log redirection above captures both standard output and errors, which makes failed API calls easier to diagnose. Keep credentials available to the crontab’s user and ensure that user can write to the log file.

6. Keep API quota use and failures visible
The current YouTube API reference lists playlistItems.list at 1 quota unit and playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.update at 50 units each. A read-before-write check can help avoid unnecessary writes when the playlist is already in the desired state. These are the costs currently shown in Google’s YouTube API quota cost reference; quota rules can change, so check that page before deployment and if a job begins failing for quota reasons.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
- The job runs at the wrong hour: run
timedatectl statusanddateon the server. Check the installed cron implementation and its timezone behavior; a crontabTZline does not change conventional Debian cron’s trigger timezone. - The script works manually but not under cron: use absolute paths, check the crontab’s Unix user, and verify that user’s access to credentials, files, and the log directory. Read the redirected log for the actual error.
- An API write is rejected: verify the OAuth authorization and account’s playlist access. For a position change, check whether the playlist uses manual ordering and whether it supports updates.
- Items are duplicated or the playlist order flips on retry: list and compare the current playlist state before writing, and make the operation idempotent.
- A multi-step rotation stops partway through: inspect the playlist’s current state and log before retrying. Design the script to recover from partial completion rather than blindly repeating every insert, update, or delete.
- The job exceeds available quota: reduce unnecessary reads and writes, especially insert or update calls, and confirm current costs in Google’s quota reference.
