How to Fix Audio and Video Out of Sync in a Nonstop Church Sermon Stream

Find whether audio or video leads, compare a local recording with the stream, and test the right fix without guessing at a universal offset.

First, watch the audience-facing stream on a separate device and identify whether the picture or sound leads—and whether the mismatch stays constant or grows. Then compare a local recording with the stream. A steady mismatch may be corrected with a carefully tested sync offset; drift that worsens over time needs diagnosis of the particular devices and signal chain.

1. Check what viewers actually hear and see

Use a phone, tablet, or computer separate from the production setup to watch the delivered stream. The encoder preview alone cannot show whether the problem occurs later in the chain.

  • If the pastor’s mouth moves before the voice is heard, the video is ahead.
  • If the voice is heard before the matching mouth movement, the audio is ahead.
  • Estimate the mismatch and note whether it is about the same at the beginning and later, or becomes more noticeable as the service continues.

Write down the direction, approximate amount, and when the issue starts. That gives you a useful baseline for a controlled test.

2. Decide whether it is a fixed offset or progressive drift

A steady mismatch

If the difference is roughly constant from the start, test a sync offset on the audio source or device that is out of time. Focusrite’s OBS setup guidance says to adjust Sync Offset in OBS Advanced Audio Properties when necessary, and cautions that the correct value depends on the computer’s audio and video processing. Treat any example value you encounter as an example, not a universal setting.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A mismatch that grows

A fixed offset changes the starting alignment; by itself, it does not explain a difference that grows during a long service. Note when drift begins, whether it affects every input or only one source, and preserve a recording plus the relevant OBS logs and configuration for whoever diagnoses the setup. The official guidance cited here does not establish one universal clock-drift repair, sample-rate setting, or reboot procedure.

3. Compare a local recording with the delivered stream

Record locally using the same production setup, then compare that recording with the viewer-facing stream. Restream’s encoder sync guide recommends this comparison to narrow down where to investigate.

  • Both the recording and stream are out of sync: inspect the source configuration and consider whether a source or device is malfunctioning. Test a sync offset if the mismatch is steady.
  • The local recording is in sync but the stream is not: investigate delivery conditions such as network or CPU issues before changing several source settings.

Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a change helped.

4. Test an offset in the equipment already in use

OBS

  1. Identify the audio input that is actually included in the outgoing mix.
  2. Open the input’s sync-offset control in OBS Advanced Audio Properties.
  3. Change only that source’s offset, then record a short test or use a private stream.
  4. Check the result on a separate device. Repeat in measured steps until the audio and picture align; the correct value is specific to the system.
  5. Record the working setting and test it again after a restart or configuration change.

If changing the offset improves the beginning but the mismatch later returns or grows, stop treating it as a simple fixed-offset problem and collect the timing and source details for diagnosis.

ATEM Mini-family switchers

If the church already uses an ATEM Mini or ATEM Mini Pro, check whether the exact model and current ATEM Software Control version expose an audio-delay control that applies to the affected signal. Controls vary by model, so verify against the manual for the equipment in use. Do not buy a switcher solely to address an undiagnosed sync issue.

5. Treat dropped frames as a separate clue

OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or that the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends investigating bitrate and network configuration. Dropped frames alone do not prove an audio/video timing fault.

6. Prepare a test before the next service

  • Run a private or local test long enough to see whether sync remains stable.
  • Have someone check the delivery endpoint on a separate device and perform a sound check before going live.
  • Monitor the inputs during the service, and log the time and symptoms if the issue returns.
  • Keep the recording, OBS logs, configuration, and notes about which sources drift together for follow-up.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your church’s nonstop YouTube stream plays uploaded sermons or other prerecorded videos, StreamNeo can keep that playlist running from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card.
