How to Fix Audio Delay While Streaming

Diagnose a constant audio-video offset, gradual drift, viewer-side playback trouble, or an out-of-sync YouTube upload, then use the right fix.

First work out whether the mismatch is a steady offset, gets worse over time, affects only one viewer, or is in an uploaded video. Each points to a different fix: adjust the early source for a constant offset, investigate timing for progressive drift, troubleshoot the affected viewer’s playback, or correct the file before upload.

Identify what is out of sync

“Audio delay” can mean two different things. If speech or game sound does not match the picture, that is an audio-video sync problem. If viewers see the whole broadcast later than the event happens, that is stream latency. Twitch describes stream delay as a buffer between the live event and what viewers see; it is not a source-sync control. Twitch’s stream-delay guidance explains the buffer and its trade-offs.

  • Steady mismatch: audio and picture are out of sync by about the same amount throughout.
  • Growing mismatch: audio and picture start close together, then drift farther apart.
  • One-device problem: only one viewer, browser, or network seems affected.
  • Uploaded-video problem: the recording itself, or its YouTube playback, is out of sync.

Also note which arrives first. If audio is early, delay audio; if video is early, delay video. A fixed offset is not the right answer to every symptom.

Check whether the stream is actually out of sync

Compare the OBS preview or a local recording with the public stream, then watch the stream as a viewer from another computer or phone. Twitch recommends checking from another device to confirm sync. This helps separate a broadcast problem from a playback problem on your own setup.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If only one viewer or browser has the problem

Have that viewer refresh or restart the player, try another stream, and test another network. Twitch’s playback troubleshooting uses these checks to isolate local playback and network issues. If other streams work but yours does not, inspect your broadcast configuration rather than changing every viewer-side setting.

If only OBS monitoring sounds wrong

Compare what you hear through OBS monitoring with the recording or public stream. Community discussion on the OBS forum notes that monitoring can behave differently from stream output in some device-clock arrangements. Establish which output is wrong before changing sync controls.

Correct a constant offset in OBS

Use the source that arrives early as the one to delay. Twitch’s OBS guidance describes both audio Sync Offset and a video Render Delay filter. The right amount depends on the measured mismatch, so do not apply a universal millisecond value.

  1. To delay audio: open the audio source controls, choose Advanced Audio Properties, and change Sync Offset (ms) for the source that is early.
  2. To delay video: add a Render Delay filter to the video capture source and set its delay.
  3. Watch the public stream from another device and adjust only as needed until speech, game sound, and visible action line up.

For example, if a spoken word is heard before the speaker’s mouth moves, audio is early, so delay that audio source. If the picture changes before the corresponding sound, delay the video source. Twitch’s OBS setup guidance covers these controls and checking sync from another device.

If the mismatch gets worse over time

A static offset shifts audio or video by a fixed amount; it does not correct timing that keeps changing. If sync is acceptable at the start but progressively deteriorates, do not keep chasing it with a larger offset. The OBS forum thread discusses possible causes including audio refresh-rate mismatches, system load, monitoring clocks, and device timing. These are community suggestions, not a universal diagnosis or a tested guarantee.

  • Check whether the drift appears in the recording or public stream, or only in OBS monitoring.
  • Compare the result with monitoring disabled or with another monitoring path, if practical.
  • Investigate audio-device timing and system load if recordings or viewers also experience progressive drift.

A USB audio interface with reliable device timing may be worth considering only when the evidence points to persistent, device-related drift. The cited discussion does not establish that buying an interface will fix every case, and it does not identify a tested model. Start with isolation and configuration checks.

Fix an out-of-sync YouTube upload

If the problem is in an uploaded video rather than a live broadcast, check the source file’s audio and video track durations. YouTube Help advises that the durations should match; if they differ, edit the tracks in video-editing software before uploading again. Test both the original file and the uploaded video in other browsers to help distinguish a file problem from playback trouble. See YouTube’s upload audio and video troubleshooting.

Keep a YouTube video live without leaving a computer on

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. StreamNeo runs from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
