Dropouts can come from the headset, pairing or mode, host settings, USB connection, distance, obstructions, or radio interference; work through the reversible checks below before considering hardware replacement.
1. Identify the headset connection and platform
Start with the exact headset model and the device you are using: PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. Determine whether audio runs through a USB receiver, Bluetooth, or a platform-native wireless connection. Check that the headset is charged, powered on, paired, and set to the correct connection or platform mode.
Compatibility can differ even among products in one family. For example, SteelSeries says only the Nova 5X in its Nova 5 family supports Xbox; the Nova 5 and Nova 5P do not. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility and connection instructions for your exact model and platform.
2. Check the audio route and receiver connection
Confirm the host is sending game and chat audio to the headset, and that any microphone input is set to the intended device. On a PC, also check the game or chat app’s own audio-device selection; it may use a different endpoint from the system default.

If the headset uses a USB receiver, make sure it is firmly connected, in the correct platform mode, and paired with the headset. Sony advises connecting the INZONE H5 transceiver directly to a computer or PS5 rather than through a USB hub. Follow the instructions for your model rather than applying another headset’s pairing or settings procedure. See the Sony INZONE H5 guide and Wyze’s audio-dropout troubleshooting page for their respective products.
3. Test distance, obstructions, and wireless interference
Move closer to the receiver and test with a clear line of sight. Walls, metal objects, and even a person between the headset and receiver can affect a wireless link. Sony lists distance, obstructions, nearby wireless communication, and radio interference among conditions that can cause skipping or disconnection.
Temporarily reduce nearby wireless activity to see whether it changes the symptoms: move unused 2.4 GHz devices away or switch them off, and, where possible, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony also recommends moving USB 3.0 devices and cables away from the INZONE H5 transceiver. Audeze identifies Bluetooth, Wi-Fi devices, appliances, and unused USB devices as possible interference sources. These are diagnostic tests, not proof that any one nearby device is responsible. Consult the Sony INZONE H5 guide and Audeze wireless-stability guidance for model-specific details.
4. Reposition the receiver and try another port
If you use a USB receiver, test another suitable port and place the receiver where it is not crowded by the back of a PC or console, metal, cables, or USB 3.0 equipment. Keep it closer to the headset if possible. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether placement affects the dropout.

Sony recommends a direct connection for the INZONE H5 receiver and specifically suggests the front USB port for PS5 dropouts. PlayStation advises removing USB 3.0 devices and, when needed, using a USB extension cable to space wireless adapters away from USB devices. Audeze likewise describes a short extension cable as an optional way to move a dongle closer to the headset and away from potential interference. Try available ports and positions first; an extension is only useful if it fits your receiver and helps with placement, and it is not a guaranteed fix.

5. Reconnect or reset using model-specific instructions
Restart the headset and host device, reconnect the receiver, and use the headset’s own re-pairing procedure if necessary. If the problem continues, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for resetting or initializing that exact headset and receiver. Reset and pairing procedures are not universal: PlayStation gives different button combinations for its PULSE 3D, Platinum, and Gold headsets, while Wyze’s instructions for its headset say to power it off and hold the power button for 15 seconds to factory reset it.
Do not substitute a reset sequence from another model. PlayStation also notes that the Headset Companion restore option for PS4 is not compatible with PS5. Use the relevant PlayStation instructions, Wyze support page, or SteelSeries support page for the specific product.

6. Test whether the headset or host is the problem
Try the headset on another supported PC or console, or test another connection mode if the manufacturer says your model supports it. Wyze recommends testing another device and switching between Bluetooth and its USB dongle connection; SteelSeries recommends trying the dongle on a different PC or console.
If it still drops out across compatible hosts after checking placement and pairing, contact the headset maker’s support with the exact model, platform, connection type, and checks you have tried. Do not assume a replacement receiver will work: receiver compatibility depends on the headset model.
Which checks should you try first?
| Check | Connection or platform | Reversibility and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm model, charge, pairing, and mode | USB receiver, Bluetooth, or native wireless; check the exact PC, PlayStation, or Xbox compatibility | Simple checks; no accessory required |
| Verify output, input, and app audio endpoints | PC, console, and game or chat app | Reversible setting checks; no accessory required |
| Move closer and reduce obstructions or nearby wireless activity | Bluetooth or wireless receiver | Reversible placement and environment tests; no accessory required |
| Try a different USB port and reposition the receiver | USB receiver; follow model and platform guidance | Reversible; test available ports before considering an extension cable |
| Re-pair, reset, or initialize | Exact headset and receiver model | Use only the manufacturer’s steps; these operations can change pairing or device state |
| Test on another supported host or mode | Another compatible PC or console, or an approved alternate connection | Requires access to another supported device or mode |
What the troubleshooting guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer support pages provide steps to investigate dropouts, not published prevalence figures or measured success rates. They cannot establish from the symptom alone whether interference, a USB connection, settings, pairing, or a faulty headset is the cause. Use the checks to isolate the issue before replacing hardware.
