If Baldur’s Gate 3 started crashing after you installed or updated mods, disable the mods and repeat the exact action that caused the crash. If the crash stops, investigate mod versions, dependencies, and load order; if it continues, check for leftover mod files and repair the game installation. The steps below distinguish supported in-game mods from third-party PC mods because their cleanup paths—and who can fix them—are different.
Before troubleshooting, record what happens and protect your save
Note whether the crash occurs at startup, while loading one particular save, or during play. Record your game version, platform and store, mod manager, installed mods, and current load order. Keep a copy of your save/profile and load-order information before changing or removing files.

Removing a mod during a playthrough can affect a save, particularly when the mod adds spells, items, or status effects. Larian warns: “Disabling some mods might affect your existing saves, so it’s a good idea to keep this in mind when you install mods!” Read the mod’s removal instructions before proceeding. Do not delete your saves as a troubleshooting step.
First test: does the crash happen with mods disabled?
For mods installed through Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager
- Open the game’s Mod Manager and uncheck the installed mods.
- Repeat the same action that triggered the crash—start the game, load the same save, or return to the same gameplay situation.
- If the crash stops, re-enable mods selectively to identify a mod or interaction. If it continues, move on to checking files and repairing the game.
Larian recommends disabling supported mods as an isolation test. A crash that persists with mods disabled may be a base-game issue; one that stops may involve a mod or a conflict. Larian’s Mod Issues support page says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods. Report a suspected player-created mod problem to its author; contact Larian if the issue persists without mods.

For third-party mods
Use the manager or instructions associated with the mods to disable them, then retest. Do not assume that unchecking mods in the in-game manager removes third-party files from the computer. If the crash continues, check for leftover files using the PC cleanup steps below.
If disabling mods stops the crash, check compatibility and load order
- Confirm versions and requirements. Read each mod’s description, installation instructions, dependencies, compatibility notes, and recent bug reports. A game update does not mean every third-party mod has been updated to match it.
- Update supported mods when an update is offered. In the in-game Mod Manager, check the Installed tab and use its Update control when shown. Labels and availability can change between game versions.
- Check multiplayer versions. Participants in officially supported modded multiplayer need the same mods and versions, according to Larian’s official mod support guidance.
- Export the load order if you use BG3 Mod Manager. Its project documentation says active mods must be exported to the game; this updates
modsettings.lsx. Follow the manager’s instructions and avoid placing mod files in subfolders under the Mods directory. - Rebuild from a working baseline. Add mods one at a time, or in small batches, and test after each addition. This makes a conflict easier to isolate than re-enabling the entire list at once.
Some mod errors can cause the game to clear the load order. If it disappears, check the manager’s dependency and error information, review the mod’s instructions, and export the intended active list again rather than assuming the game retained it.
If the crash remains, check for leftover third-party mod files (Windows PC)
Third-party mods can leave files behind, and reinstalling the game does not necessarily remove all of them. Larian’s cleanup guidance is for Windows PC; do not apply these paths to console or Mac installations.
- Back up your profile and saves. Preserve the current load order and check the instructions for any mods used by the save you are testing.
- Check the game installation’s
Datafolder. If it containsModsorPublicfolders left by third-party mods, Larian says those folders are safe to delete. Make sure you are looking in the game’s installation folder, not a similarly named folder elsewhere. - Check the current Windows profile’s mod folder:
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods. Remove stale mod files only after backing up and confirming they are not needed for your setup. - Consider migrated profile data. Older files stored under Documents may have been copied into Local AppData during migration. If you previously used an older profile, check for stale files in the current profile location as well.
- Review
modsettings.lsxcautiously. Larian describes deleting this profile file in certain cleanup circumstances, including when not using a new profile for the current patch. Do not treat deletion as a universal fix; preserve a copy and follow the instructions for your situation.
For the current cleanup details, see Larian’s Mod Issues and Crashing Upon Startup (PC) guidance. File locations and procedures are specific to the Windows PC setup described there.

Repair game files after a clean mod test
If disabling mods and checking relevant leftovers do not resolve the crash, use the repair option for the store where you installed the game. These checks repair or validate game files; they do not substitute for removing third-party files from separate mod locations.
| Store | Repair path |
|---|---|
| Steam | Open the game’s Properties and choose Verify Integrity of Game Files. |
| GOG Galaxy | Choose Manage Installation → Verify / Repair. |
Larian documents these paths in its Crashes During Gameplay (PC) support article. Exact labels may vary as store software changes.

Use Windows logs to narrow down a persistent crash
Find the faulting application or module
Open Windows Event Viewer and inspect the Application log for an entry matching the crash time. Note the faulting application and, if shown, the faulting module. This is a diagnostic clue to include in a support report, not proof by itself that a particular mod or component caused the crash. Larian’s PC crash guidance explains how to check Event Viewer.
Check for a launcher data-mismatch log
If the launcher displayed a data mismatch, Larian’s startup guidance points to a version-specific _alteredFiles.txt file in %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache. Check the file for details about altered game data and include relevant information when contacting support.
Consider LevelCache for save or load failures
Larian also identifies LevelCache as a possible factor in save/load problems. Consult the current startup troubleshooting instructions before changing cache files, and preserve saves and profile data.
Choose the right support contact
- The crash follows a player-created mod: Contact the mod’s author through its listing. Include the game and mod versions, the steps that reproduce the crash, and relevant screenshots or logs.
- The crash persists with mods removed or disabled: Report it to Larian. Include when the crash occurs, your platform and store, game version, the steps to reproduce it, and the Event Viewer faulting module or other crash details if available. Provide any system information Larian requests.
Larian’s Mod Issues, Crashes During Gameplay (PC), and Crashing Upon Startup (PC) pages give its current reporting and troubleshooting guidance. A fix is not guaranteed: the cause depends on the crash pattern, game version, mods, and platform.
