For PC crashes, Larian’s first-line checks include closing conflicting background software, verifying game files, testing the other renderer, and removing outdated mods. Back up your local profile before changing cache or profile folders.
Check your game version first
Before troubleshooting, compare your installed version with Larian’s current official news and support pages; fixes and steps can change between updates. Hotfix #36, announced March 26, 2026, identifies version 4.1.1.7209685 and says it fixed a framerate drop that could lead to a crash when loading a save, along with several other crashes. That release note describes specific fixes in that version, not a solution for every crash or bug.

If Baldur’s Gate 3 crashes at startup
Try these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what helped. Larian’s startup guidance is in its Crashing upon startup (PC) FAQ.
- Close possible conflicts. Exit nonessential antivirus or firewall utilities, graphics overlays and monitoring or tuning tools, and chat apps, then launch the game again. Larian specifically flags ASUS Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer as a possible source of startup crashes; disable or uninstall it if it is installed.
- Verify the installation. In Steam, use “Verify Integrity of Game Files.” In GOG Galaxy, use “Verify / Repair.” These checks can replace missing or damaged installation files without requiring you to change your saves.
- Test the other renderer. Use the launcher to switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan, then test startup. Larian notes Vulkan may be faster in many cases but can be less stable; neither renderer is best for every PC.
- Address a matching runtime error. If the error specifically names a Visual C++ DLL, follow Larian’s Visual C++ Redistributable repair or installation guidance. Also check for graphics-driver and Windows updates. A runtime reinstall is not a universal fix when there is no related error.
- Test without mods. Remove mods for a diagnostic launch, including older mod files in the game’s data folders and local AppData locations. Older files can remain in the current profile location even after other mod changes.
- Clear LevelCache only after simpler checks. If this is not a fresh install, Larian says corrupt contents in the LevelCache folder can affect saving or loading. Back up your profile first; do not confuse cache cleanup with deleting the profile, which contains saves and configuration.
- Isolate deeper conflicts. If the checks above fail, inspect Windows Event Viewer for the game’s application error and faulting module. A clean boot or a different Windows account can help identify a software conflict, but these are diagnostic tests rather than guaranteed repairs.
If you need to locate local profile data for a backup or test, use Larian’s startup FAQ for the applicable folder details. Rename a profile folder rather than casually deleting it, keep a separate backup, and remember that cloud synchronization may restore synced files.

If the game crashes during gameplay
Use Larian’s Crashes during gameplay (PC) guidance. Remove old mod files and verify the local installation through Steam or GOG. Check Event Viewer for the error code or faulting module; testing a clean boot or a separate Windows administrator account can help narrow down a conflict. If you test another account, you may need to copy a recent save there to make the test practical; Larian’s FAQ provides the profile save location.
If the crash persists, send Larian Support a DxDiag report and relevant crash dumps. Describe where it occurs—such as during combat, outside combat, or while using a particular skill or spell—so the report includes a reproducible pattern when possible.
If you cannot save or load a save
First distinguish the symptom. A save command that fails is not the same as a save that was corrupted, and neither is necessarily the same as a crash while loading. Larian lists separate help for Unable to Save and Errors or Crashes When Loading Saves. Follow the live FAQ for the specific case; the support index’s visible “Unable to Save” excerpt asks players to close nonessential programs, especially antivirus or backup software monitoring disk activity, but does not show a complete procedure.
For save or load trouble, Larian also identifies corrupt LevelCache contents as a possible cause. Before any file operation, copy your local profile, which contains saved games, and take care with cloud-sync behavior. Do not delete or reset the whole profile as a first step.

Check the PC’s storage requirement
Larian’s official system requirements state: “A solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play Baldur’s Gate 3, and we recommend you install the game on yours.” Treat this as a requirement check, not as evidence that installing an SSD will cure crashes caused by mods, software conflicts, corrupted files, or a game bug.

When basic fixes do not work
- Keep track of the exact symptom and the last change made; avoid changing several settings at once.
- Record the game version and renderer, and note whether mods were removed for the test.
- For persistent gameplay crashes, include DxDiag and relevant crash dumps when contacting Larian Support, along with where the crash happens.
- Before altering profile or cache data, retain a separate copy of local saves and account for possible cloud restoration.
