If Baldur’s Gate 3 is lagging or stuttering on PC, first close overlays and other non-essential apps, then compare Vulkan with DirectX 11 and test lower graphics settings. Change one thing at a time and replay the same scene so you can tell what helped. If those quick checks fail, verify the game files, check for leftover mod files, update drivers and Windows, confirm the game is using your dedicated GPU, and make sure it is installed on an SSD.
Identify what kind of lag you are seeing
“Lag” can mean several different things: a consistently low frame rate, uneven frame pacing, delayed input, or a brief hitch. The timing and location are useful clues, but none alone proves a particular cause. Note whether the issue happens everywhere or only in one area, save, or session, and whether it began after a settings, driver, game, or mod change.
For a useful diagnosis, record your CPU, GPU, RAM, game version, graphics driver version, resolution, selected graphics API, whether you use mods, and whether the game is installed on an SSD or hard drive. Without those details, it is not possible to identify a cause for a particular PC.
Try quick, reversible settings and software checks
Larian recommends trying these kinds of changes for graphical problems. Test them individually, returning to the same scene after each change where possible. Restore a setting if it makes no difference or worsens performance.

- Close background software. Exit non-essential applications, overlays, and monitoring utilities for a test. Larian lists these as possible sources of issues. See Larian’s graphical troubleshooting steps and its PC gameplay troubleshooting.
- Compare Vulkan and DirectX 11. Launch the game with the other available graphics API and test the same scene. Larian recommends trying the alternative; it does not identify one API as best for every PC.
- Reduce graphics load. Lower graphics settings or resolution temporarily. If the issue improves, raise settings gradually to find a workable balance.
- Change display mode. Try windowed mode or fake fullscreen and compare performance with your usual mode.
- Test a 60 FPS cap if your monitor is above 60 Hz. This is a diagnostic setting, not a universal fix. Compare the same scene with and without the cap.
These comparisons help distinguish a settings or software-related problem from one that needs deeper investigation. They do not establish that any single change will solve every kind of stutter.
Verify files and check mod leftovers
Damaged or altered local files can complicate troubleshooting. Use the verification option for the store where you installed the game:

- GOG Galaxy: use the game’s Verify/Repair option.
If you have used mods, check for leftover mod files using the locations and guidance in Larian’s graphical issues guide. A clean game-file verification does not necessarily remove files installed separately by mods.
Larian also lists recreating the graphics settings file and clearing the level cache as troubleshooting options for relevant cases. These actions can alter local configuration. Back up saves and personal files before changing profile data, and follow Larian’s instructions rather than deleting unrelated folders.

Check the graphics device, drivers, and Windows
On a PC with both integrated graphics and a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU, confirm the game is using the discrete card. Larian’s guide also calls out Microsoft Basic Renderer where applicable. If the game is assigned to the wrong device, performance may not reflect the capability of the installed gaming GPU.
Check for graphics driver and Windows updates. If ordinary updates do not help, Larian lists resetting the driver’s 3D settings and performing a clean graphics-driver installation as later troubleshooting options. Because these steps can change settings used by other games and applications, use the instructions for your GPU and note existing custom settings before resetting them.

Confirm the game is installed on an SSD
Larian’s official Windows requirements state: “A solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play Baldur’s Gate 3.” See Larian’s system requirements. If the game is installed on a hard drive, moving it to a compatible SSD is a reasonable way to meet that requirement. Check your PC’s supported drive type, available slot, and capacity before choosing a drive.
An SSD is a requirement, not a guaranteed cure for every stutter. It will not by itself resolve an issue caused by an API choice, driver, mod, background application, or another system limitation.

When a patch may be relevant
Larian’s Hotfix 34 notes described model-streaming work intended to reduce frame-rate spikes in busy areas, including the Lower City in Act 3. Those notes are historical: they do not establish that a particular PC’s current stutter has the same cause, or that all stuttering has been eliminated. Check your installed game build and official support information before attributing a current problem to a specific update.
Choose the next step by effort and reversibility
- Fast, easy to undo: close apps and overlays; switch API; reduce resolution or settings; try another display mode or an FPS cap.
- More care needed: verify files; inspect mod leftovers; change configuration or cache; reset or reinstall graphics drivers. Back up personal files before profile-data changes.
- Conditional hardware step: move the installation to an SSD only if it is currently on a hard drive, and after checking PC compatibility.
If the issue persists, give Larian support the setup and symptom details you recorded, along with the steps you tested and what changed. That is more actionable than reporting only that the game “lags.”
