These are troubleshooting suggestions from Larian, not guaranteed fixes; the right next step depends on whether the flicker is limited to the game or affects Windows more broadly.
First, check whether the flicker is only in Baldur’s Gate 3
Notice whether the flicker appears only while BG3 is running or also in other apps and on the Windows desktop. This helps choose which troubleshooting path to try; it does not identify a specific cause.
Microsoft’s general Windows guidance says display flicker is commonly associated with a display driver or an incompatible app. Its Task Manager check can help distinguish those possibilities: open Task Manager and observe whether it flickers along with the rest of the screen. If Task Manager stays steady while other areas flicker, an incompatible app is more likely. This is a Windows diagnostic, not a BG3-specific test. Try these BG3 troubleshooting steps in order
After each change, test the same save or location under otherwise similar conditions. That makes it easier to tell whether the change affected the flicker.

Close overlays and nonessential apps
Exit nonessential background programs, especially graphics-tweaking or monitoring overlays and chat software. Retest before changing other settings. Larian lists these among the programs to close during troubleshooting in its official graphical-issues FAQ.

Switch the renderer in the launcher
In the Larian Launcher, choose the other available renderer: switch from DirectX 11 to Vulkan or from Vulkan to DirectX 11. Larian recommends trying the alternative to see whether it changes the issue. Keep the same save, location, display mode, resolution, frame cap, and graphics settings for the comparison; change only the renderer, then note flicker, stability, and performance.

Neither renderer is a universal flicker remedy. Larian’s support overview says Vulkan may improve performance in most cases but may be less stable. That general trade-off does not predict which renderer will work better on a particular PC.

Test display mode, resolution, and frame rate
Try Windowed or Fake Fullscreen instead of the current display mode. You can also lower the resolution or graphics settings to see whether the symptom changes. If your monitor’s refresh rate is above 60 Hz, Larian suggests trying a 60 FPS cap. These are diagnostic tests, not promises of a performance gain. If a change helps, restore settings gradually to identify which one matters.

Check which GPU the game is using
If your PC has both integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that BG3 is using the discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU rather than integrated graphics or Microsoft Basic Renderer. Larian’s FAQ includes this check for systems where more than one graphics option is available.

Review graphics drivers and BG3’s requirements
The official Baldur’s Gate 3 system requirements list DirectX 11 and Vulkan 1.1 and recommend current graphics drivers for compatibility and performance. The requirements page does not identify a particular driver version as a flicker fix. Check current driver guidance from your GPU manufacturer rather than assuming a specific update will solve the problem.

Reset BG3’s graphics settings if needed
If the issue began after settings changes or the configuration may be incompatible, Larian says to delete or rename
graphicSettings.lsxin%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3. The game will recreate the file. Keep a copy first if you want to preserve your current configuration; resetting the file may remove your saved graphics settings.
How to compare DirectX 11 and Vulkan fairly
Use the same save and location, display mode, resolution, frame cap, and other graphics settings for both tests. Change only the renderer. Record whether flicker occurs, along with any change in stability or performance. If you alter several settings between runs, you will not know which change affected the symptom.

When the flicker affects Windows beyond BG3
If flicker appears in other apps or across the desktop, follow Windows-level troubleshooting as well as the game checks. Microsoft identifies display drivers and incompatible apps as common general possibilities; the Task Manager comparison above can help indicate which path to investigate. The available game-specific guidance does not establish one universal cause of BG3 flickering.
What these steps can—and cannot—tell you
Larian’s recommendations provide a way to isolate likely software, renderer, display-mode, frame-cap, GPU-selection, and configuration variables. They do not confirm a cause or guarantee a fix for an individual PC. The official requirements identify supported graphics APIs and recommend current drivers, but do not name a specific driver release as the solution. No general hardware purchase follows from these checks alone; consider hardware only if further diagnosis points to a fault.
