When Gale dies for the first time after joining your party, his corpse releases a damaging necrotic aura. Keep companions clear, then use the pouch protocol to obtain his Scroll of True Resurrection—or revive him with another method, including an ordinary Scroll of Revivify.
How to get Gale’s Scroll of True Resurrection
Gale’s first death triggers a special quest. The in-game objective describes a serious time constraint: the quest reference gives a two-day warning and notes a game-over risk after three long rests in a particular unresolved state. This is an in-game deadline tied to resting, not real-world time. Keep nearby party members away from the body while you interact with it; the necrotic aura can hurt them.
- Loot Gale’s body for Gale’s Pouch. Take care around the necrotic aura.
- Open the pouch and pull the purple thread counter-clockwise.
- Take out the flute and play D, E, A, D. The melody is hinted at in Gale’s letter.
- Answer the magma mephit’s question with “K’ha’ssji’trach’ash.”
- Give the mephit Gale’s letter. It turns the letter into a Scroll of True Resurrection.
The scroll is one way to complete the quest, not a requirement. You can use it on Gale or save it for another fallen companion and revive Gale by another method; the quest reference says any resurrection method satisfies the objective. BG3 Wiki’s quest reference reproduces the objective text confirming the reward and return-to-life step.
Can you use a normal Revivify scroll on Gale?
Yes. The quest reference specifically says another resurrection method—including a Scroll of Revivify—will satisfy Gale’s quest. Revivify returns its target with one hit point, so heal Gale or move him out of danger as soon as he is back. When casting the spell, you can choose a location within its 30-foot range, which may help avoid reviving him beside a hazard. The Revivify reference lists the spell’s range, action cost, level-three spell-slot requirement, and one-hit-point result.

Which revival method should you use?
| Method | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll of True Resurrection | Quest-specific reward obtained through Gale’s pouch sequence; the reference says it can revive Gale or another dead companion. BG3 Wiki | You want the prepared scroll, or want to save it for another companion. |
| Scroll of Revivify | Supported alternative for completing Gale’s quest; revives with one hit point. Quest reference and spell reference | You have the scroll and want to avoid the pouch sequence. |
| Revivify spell | A level-three spell with a listed 30-foot range; it costs an action and a level-three spell slot, and restores one hit point. BG3 Wiki | A party member can cast it and you want to choose a safer spot within range. |
| Withers | A general companion-revival option described by PC Gamer’s 2023 companion guide; Gale’s quest reference is the source specifically confirming that an alternative method satisfies his quest. | You are using the camp revival option rather than an item or spell. |
What if Gale’s pouch is missing or the sequence fails?
The pouch was destroyed
If you keep pulling pouch threads after the warning, the pouch disappears and its prepared-scroll protocol is lost. Use another resurrection method instead of trying to repeat steps that are no longer available. The quest objective reproduced by BG3 Wiki says Gale trusts his companions to find another means of reviving him.
An answer or interaction was wrong
The quest reference says other interaction errors allow another attempt. Follow the sequence carefully: pull the thread counter-clockwise, play D-E-A-D, give the mephit the specified name, and hand over Gale’s letter.

The pouch or projection never appears
The quest reference documents availability edge cases involving where Gale first dies and the state of his Netherese Orb. The pouch, projection, and special scroll are not guaranteed in every quest state or location. If the pouch is unavailable, use another revival method; a general guide also lists Scroll of Revivify, the Revivify spell, and Withers as companion-revival options. PC Gamer’s guide covers those general methods.
