If Battlefield 2042 says “Unable to load persistence data” or stays on “Connecting to Online Services,” first close the game and fully power down your PC or console, then power-cycle your router. This is a workaround DICE staff have shared, not a guaranteed fix: the error does not by itself prove that your save is corrupt or your home internet is at fault.
What the error means—and what it does not
The message indicates that Battlefield 2042 failed to connect to or load persistence data. It does not identify the cause. EA forum reports describe different connection, launch, and matchmaking symptoms, and EA staff have discussed a historical ISP-specific case that was not limited to Battlefield. There is no established single cause or universal fix for every player.
Start with the restart sequence below. If the error continues, use the later checks to narrow down whether the symptom is tied to the game session, platform, account, or network.
Try a full game, device, and router power-cycle
- Close Battlefield 2042. Exit the game rather than leaving it suspended or running in the background.
- Shut down your PC or console completely. Do not just restart the game.
- Turn off power to your router or internet equipment. Wait briefly before restoring power.
- Restore power, then restart your PC or console and launch Battlefield 2042 again.
- If the message returns, repeat the sequence. DICE forum guidance describes this as a workaround that may help while an issue is being worked on, not a guaranteed resolution. See DICE’s EA Forums guidance.
On console, check platform and game state
EA staff have suggested several console checks for connection problems. Menu labels and availability can differ by console and software version, so use the equivalent current settings on your device.

These are historical support suggestions, not a required sequence or a confirmed solution for every instance of this error. See EA’s console troubleshooting discussion.
Check the connection without assuming Wi-Fi is the cause
If the error persists, review basic and advanced connection troubleshooting for your platform. EA staff also recommend connecting a console to the router with an Ethernet cable for stability. A wired connection can help rule out an unstable Wi-Fi link, but the suggestion does not show that Wi-Fi caused this error—and it cannot resolve an EA service incident, account issue, or ISP routing problem by itself. See EA’s connection troubleshooting thread.
Before changing router or DNS settings, note what actually happens. Does the error appear during the initial connection, only when joining a mode, or during a match? Does the same account work on another device or network? These observations can help support investigate, but none proves a cause on its own.

Distinguish a local symptom from a wider service or ISP issue
EA maintained a historical thread about reports from some AT&T users. Its 2023 update said EA would share reports with AT&T and AWS; the described symptom occurred during the initial “Connecting to servers” phase, rather than when joining a particular mode or playlist. That history may help you describe a similar pattern, but it does not establish that AT&T—or any other provider—is responsible for a current error. Read the historical EA thread.
Check current EA/Battlefield service communications and your platform’s status before spending time on local network changes. The available information here does not verify live service status. If the problem appears limited to one ISP or region, record the provider, region, time, and exact symptom, then report it to EA and your ISP rather than treating the pattern as proof of an outage or routing fault.
Signing out and back into the EA app and connecting through a VPN have appeared as player suggestions in forum reports. They are anecdotal, not EA-confirmed fixes; VPN use is not a general recommendation for this error. See the later player report and another historical report.

Give EA Support useful details if it still fails
When you contact EA through official support channels, include the exact error text and code, if shown, along with:
- Whether it happens while connecting, when joining a mode, or mid-game.
- The timestamp and time zone, how often it happens, and when it last occurred.
- Your platform and the account or gamertag details EA requests.
- Whether other devices or accounts on the same network have the same issue, and whether another network changes the symptom.
- Your ISP and region if you suspect the issue is network-specific.
Share account-identifying information only through official support channels. Capturing the timing and exact failure stage is more useful than reporting only that the game will not connect.
