Start by updating Bayonetta 3, then match the next step to the symptom: a slowdown during play, a game that loads slowly or freezes, a known move or progression bug, or controller input trouble. Nintendo’s documented fixes cover particular bugs and general downloaded-software problems; they do not promise to eliminate every frame-rate dip or slow load.
First, identify what is going wrong
The right fix depends on whether the problem is limited to Bayonetta 3 or affects the Switch more broadly. If an error code appears, use Nintendo’s guidance for that specific code rather than treating it as a general performance issue.

Update Bayonetta 3
Nintendo’s Americas update history lists Ver. 1.2.0, released January 10, 2023, after Ver. 1.1.0, released October 27, 2022. Nintendo Japan dates Ver. 1.2.0 to January 11, 2023; the one-day difference is how the regional pages present the release date. Check the version shown on your own console rather than assuming it is installed.
- From the HOME Menu, highlight Bayonetta 3 without starting it.
- Press + or −, then choose Software Update → Via the Internet.
- After the update, start the game and check the version on its title screen.
Nintendo says save data remains available after downloading the update. Its update instructions and version history are at How to Update Bayonetta 3; the regional Japanese record is at Nintendo Japan’s Ver. 1.2.0 update page.

What the updates do—and do not—fix
Ver. 1.2.0: Viola, named bugs, and camera visibility
The update adjusted Viola’s block and Witch Time behavior, fixed several listed gameplay issues, and included a camera-visibility adjustment in Nintendo Japan’s notes. The Americas notes specifically list a fix for a progression issue in Chapter 7, Verse 5, along with other named move and animation bugs. These are targeted changes, not a published claim that all performance or loading problems are fixed.
For Viola, Nintendo says a block judgment was added during the release animation, an effect was added when Witch Time activates, and both the activation window and Witch Time duration were lengthened. The Japanese notes clarify that guarding at the moment of being hit can succeed and trigger Witch Time; repeatedly entering guard reduces the activation window. If the timing still feels difficult, avoid rapidly repeating the block input and watch for the activation effect. The change improves the documented behavior but cannot guarantee that every timing issue is resolved.

Ver. 1.1.0: earlier additions
Nintendo lists Ver. 1.1.0 as adding Naive Angel Mode options and online ranking features, along with general balance and issue adjustments. It is useful history, but the published notes do not identify it as a general performance fix.
For long loads, freezes, or an unresponsive game
Nintendo’s general instructions apply to downloaded Switch software; they do not establish that corrupted data is the cause of a particular Bayonetta 3 problem. Try the lower-risk checks first, then move to reinstalling only if needed.

- Restart the console. Hold POWER for at least three seconds, choose Power Options → Restart, and relaunch the game. If the console itself will not respond, hold POWER for 20 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again.
- Install available system and game updates. Update the Switch system software and follow the game-update steps above.
- Check the title for corrupt data. Open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software → Bayonetta 3 → Check for Corrupt Data.
- Delete and redownload only if the earlier steps fail. Before deleting the software, make sure you can redownload your purchased copy. Nintendo’s article discusses downloaded software generally and does not identify this as a proven remedy for Bayonetta 3 frame pacing.
For stuttering or slowdown during gameplay
Install the available game update and check whether the apparent performance issue is tied to a specific documented bug, camera situation, or move. The official pages cited here provide no measured frame rate, loading-time comparison, or Switch setting guaranteed to improve Bayonetta 3 performance. Restarting or checking the software for corruption may help with a system hang or damaged installation, but Nintendo does not present those steps as a verified fix for persistent stutter or frame pacing.

For button or stick problems
Try the affected buttons or sticks in the HOME Menu and, if possible, in another game. If they behave inaccurately in multiple places, consult Nintendo’s Joy-Con support linked from its Bayonetta 3 update support page. Do not infer that a controller needs replacement from behavior seen in one game alone.
If the controls work elsewhere but fail only in Bayonetta 3, verify the game update and compare the symptom with the specific Viola or gameplay changes listed above before treating it as a console-wide hardware fault.
