BingWallpaperApp.exe is normally a component of Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper desktop app. If it crashes, will not install, or refuses to uninstall, restart Windows first, then use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to repair, reset, or remove Bing Wallpaper. Reinstall only with Microsoft’s current installer. If the file is in an unexpected folder, lacks a Microsoft digital signature, or returns after removal, scan it with Windows Security before deleting anything.
What BingWallpaperApp.exe is
BingWallpaperApp.exe belongs to the Bing Wallpaper application family. The app changes the Windows desktop background using Bing imagery and runs as a desktop application rather than as a core Windows process. Microsoft’s Download Center tells users to “Run BingWallpaperInstaller.exe,” while Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper instructions tell users to open and run BingWallpaper.exe from the Downloads folder. The name shown in Task Manager or an error dialog can therefore differ from the installer name.

A normal file should be installed with Bing Wallpaper, appear in a Microsoft-related application location, and have a Microsoft digital signature. Those checks establish that the file is consistent with the app; they do not prove that every file with the same name is genuine. Malware can copy a familiar filename into another directory, which is why the path, signature, and scan result matter together.

| Bing Wallpaper opens but crashes or stops changing images | Restart Windows, then use Repair in Installed apps | Use Reset; uninstall and reinstall if the crash continues |
| Bing Wallpaper is listed but cannot be removed | Try Uninstall from Installed apps | Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter |
| The app is missing from Installed apps | Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter | Remove leftover app data after checking that Bing Wallpaper is closed, then reinstall |
| The installer stops at “Setting up Bing Wallpaper” | Restart, close residual Bing Wallpaper processes, and retry | Use a clean boot or the troubleshooter; community reports also describe checking startup entries |
| The executable is in an unexpected location or has no valid Microsoft signature | Run a full Windows Security scan before removal | Quarantine or remove what Windows Security identifies, then reinstall from Microsoft if needed |
Do not delete the executable first merely because its name appears in an error message. Deleting files while the application is registered can leave an incomplete uninstall and make a later reinstall harder.

Do these quick checks before changing files
1. Save work and restart Windows
A restart closes a stuck updater, releases a locked executable, and reloads startup entries. After signing back in, try Bing Wallpaper once. If it works only until the next restart, continue with the installed-app repair steps rather than repeatedly launching the executable.
2. Confirm which copy is running
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the Details or Processes view, and look for a Bing Wallpaper process. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Record the folder before closing the process. A path that does not resemble the Microsoft Bing Wallpaper installation location deserves a security check.
3. Check the file’s signature
Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and look for a Digital Signatures tab. A missing or failed Microsoft signature is not proof of malware, but it removes an important authenticity signal. Pair this check with a full Windows Security scan, especially if the file repeatedly reappears after you remove Bing Wallpaper.
Repair or reset Bing Wallpaper in Windows Settings
Windows supports repair and reset for many installed desktop applications. Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its data; Reset is more destructive and returns the app to a clean state. The exact buttons can vary by Windows edition and app packaging.

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Bing Wallpaper. Select the three-dot menu next to it and choose Advanced options if that option is shown.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and start Bing Wallpaper again.
- If the crash or launch failure remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset. Read the warning first: reset can remove the app’s local settings and cached data.
- Restart Windows and test the app before making any other changes.
If neither button is available, Windows may be treating this copy as a traditional desktop installation. Move to the uninstall and reinstall procedure rather than downloading a replacement executable from a third-party mirror.
Uninstall and reinstall from Microsoft
Normal uninstall
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Bing Wallpaper, open its menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal prompts. If Windows asks you to close Bing Wallpaper, first end its process in Task Manager.
- Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
- Open Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper download page or Download Center page, obtain the current installer, and run it. Microsoft’s published wording is “Run BingWallpaperInstaller.exe.”
Use the official Microsoft page rather than an unknown mirror. A download that changes the filename, adds an unrelated installer, or asks for unusual permissions is a reason to stop and rescan the file.
When uninstall is missing or fails
Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is intended for cases where corrupted registry keys or incomplete installation data prevent a program from being installed, completely uninstalled, or updated. Use it when Bing Wallpaper is absent from Installed apps, when the Uninstall button does nothing, or when a reinstall reports that an older copy is still present.
- Download the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter from Microsoft Support.
- Run it and choose the action for installing or uninstalling a program, depending on your problem.
- Allow it to detect Bing Wallpaper. If the program is listed, select it and let the troubleshooter apply its repair.
- Restart Windows, then try the official installer again.
The troubleshooter targets installation and removal records; it is not a malware scanner and should not be treated as one.

Remove leftover Bing Wallpaper data before reinstalling
After an uninstall, damaged local data can continue to interfere with setup. A Microsoft Q&A community report describes deleting the Bing Wallpaper app folder under the user profile, but this is community guidance rather than a guaranteed Microsoft fix. Use it only after uninstalling and only when Bing Wallpaper processes are closed.
- Open Task Manager and end any Bing Wallpaper process that is still running.
- Press
Windows+R, enter%localappdata%Microsoft, and press Enter. - Look for the folder named
BingWallpaperApp. Delete that folder only; do not remove neighboring Microsoft folders. - Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Bing Wallpaper again from Microsoft and run the current installer.
If Windows says the folder is in use, do not force-delete unrelated files. Restart, verify that no Bing Wallpaper process has relaunched, and try the same targeted deletion once more. If the folder is not present, skip this procedure; its absence is not an error.
Fix an installer that stops at “Setting up Bing Wallpaper”
A Microsoft Q&A discussion describes setup stopping at “Setting up Bing Wallpaper” and mentions residual processes, startup entries, clean-boot testing, and repeated reinstall attempts. The discussion records user experience, not a confirmed Microsoft root cause, so treat these as diagnostic steps rather than universal fixes.

Cancel the installer, restart Windows, and check Task Manager before launching it again. End only processes clearly associated with Bing Wallpaper. Leaving a previous installer or app process active can keep files locked and cause the next attempt to appear frozen.

Test with a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a limited set of services and startup programs. It can reveal interference from another startup utility, but it changes the normal startup environment. If you use it, record which services you disable, install Bing Wallpaper, and then restore normal startup settings afterward. Do not permanently disable security software or unknown services simply to make the installer progress.
Check startup entries after installation
If Bing Wallpaper installs but hangs or fails every time Windows starts, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. Disable only the Bing Wallpaper startup entry temporarily to determine whether the failure is tied to automatic launch. Re-enable it if the application works correctly when started manually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Bing Wallpaper keeps crashing after reinstall
Separate an app problem from a Windows problem
Note when the crash happens: immediately at launch, when the wallpaper changes, after waking from sleep, or only during sign-in. A crash limited to one trigger points to a damaged app state or startup interaction; failures across several applications suggest a broader Windows problem. The Bing Wallpaper-specific sequence remains restart, Repair, Reset, uninstall, cleanup if needed, and reinstall.
Use the installed-app reset before deleting profile data
Reset is the least invasive way to clear app data because Windows performs the operation for the registered application. The manual folder deletion described above should be reserved for an uninstall that has already completed or for a broken registration that prevents a clean reinstall.

Capture the exact error
Write down the full message, the time, and whether Windows names BingWallpaperApp.exe, BingWallpaper.exe, or the installer. A filename alone does not identify the cause. Keep the path shown by Open file location and the result of the signature check; those details are useful if you need Microsoft Support or if a security scan reports a threat.
Is BingWallpaperApp.exe malware?
Not automatically. The file is associated with Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper application, and Microsoft distributes that application through its own installer pages. However, a malicious program can use the same filename. Treat the following combination as suspicious:
- The file runs from a location unrelated to the Bing Wallpaper installation rather than the expected Microsoft application path.
- The file has no Microsoft signature, or Windows reports that the signature is invalid.
- The process returns after Bing Wallpaper has been uninstalled.
- Windows Security or another trusted security product flags the file.
Scan before deleting a suspicious copy
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan.
- Let Windows Security quarantine or remove anything it identifies as a threat.
- Restart Windows and check whether the suspicious process is still present.
Microsoft advises scanning suspicious apps and cleaning detected threats before removal. The available evidence does not establish that every file named BingWallpaperApp.exe is malicious, so do not infer an infection from the filename alone.

How to remove Bing Wallpaper completely
If your goal is simply to stop using Bing Wallpaper, use the normal uninstall first. Confirm that the app no longer appears in Installed apps, restart, and then check Task Manager for a remaining process. If the uninstaller fails, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Only after the app is removed should you consider deleting the specific %localappdata%MicrosoftBingWallpaperApp folder described in the community procedure. Avoid registry editing or deleting broad Microsoft directories based on an online tip; the cited guidance does not establish any universal registry path, and an incorrect deletion can damage other applications.
Why these fixes work—and when they do not
- Restart: clears locked processes and pending startup state, but cannot repair damaged app files.
- Repair: corrects an installed app without intentionally clearing all local data, when Windows exposes the option.
- Reset: clears the app’s registered state and data, which can remove corruption but also removes preferences.
- Uninstall and reinstall: replaces application files, but a broken uninstall record or leftover profile folder can make the new installation fail.
- Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter: addresses corrupted installation records and registry keys; it does not establish whether an executable is safe.
- Targeted leftover-folder cleanup: can remove damaged local data, but the cited procedure is community advice and must not be expanded to unrelated folders.
- Windows Security scan: handles the security question; it is required when path, signature, or behavior is suspicious.
If the official installer still fails after a restart, a clean uninstall, the troubleshooter, and targeted cleanup, preserve the exact error text and installer stage. That information distinguishes a Bing Wallpaper issue from a broader Windows installation or security problem.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, excess temporary or cache files, and app-crash records. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, includes a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
