Most BioShock “co-op” invite failures are caused by a mode or edition mismatch, not by your router. The original BioShock is single-player. BioShock 2 has a separate multiplayer mode with private matches and Steam-friend invitations, but its campaign is not documented as cooperative. BioShock: The Collection does not include BioShock 2 multiplayer. Identify the exact game, edition, platform and failure point before changing network settings.
First, identify which BioShock you own
“BioShock” can refer to three different products with different multiplayer capabilities. Check the exact title shown in your Steam library or console library. Do not assume that owning a collection gives you every feature from every original release.

Steam’s official listings identify the first BioShock as single-player and BioShock 2 as single-player plus multiplayer. A 2K announcement for The Collection specifically says that BioShock 2 multiplayer is not included. Those are edition facts, not temporary connection errors.
Look at the product name rather than relying on a desktop shortcut or a shared screenshot. “BioShock 2” and “BioShock 2 Remastered” are not interchangeable for this purpose. Write down the storefront as well: the documented invitation wording refers to a Steam friends list, while the available manuals do not establish an equivalent path for every console or storefront build.

“Co-op” and BioShock 2 multiplayer are different things
The campaign is not documented as co-op
The BioShock 2 manual separates the single-player story from its multiplayer mode. It describes the multiplayer setting as Rapture’s civil war and says players can fight for their own survival or for Atlas or Ryan. It does not describe two players progressing through the story campaign together.
The manual’s mode description is: “It’s 1959 and civil war has broken out across Rapture. Fight for your own survival or battle for Atlas or Ryan as the Fall of Rapture begins.” This describes competitive or matchmaking play, not a shared story campaign. If your goal is to play the narrative campaign side by side, an invite failure is expected: No official BioShock documentation documents a cooperative campaign for BioShock or BioShock 2.
That distinction also changes what a successful connection would look like. A multiplayer match is a separate destination from the single-player campaign. Joining a friend does not mean both players can load the same campaign save, progress through story chapters together or switch between campaign and multiplayer without leaving the relevant mode.

The original BioShock 2 multiplayer supports matches
If you mean the original BioShock 2 multiplayer, the manual documents private matches and invitations from a Steam friends list. Its wording is: “Invite players from your Steam friends’ list to the game.” That is a matchmaking feature, not a co-op story mode. Private matches are described as matches played exclusively with friends.
Use “match,” “private match,” or “multiplayer” when describing the feature to another player or to support. Use “campaign co-op” only to describe the feature you hoped existed. Mixing those terms can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction, especially when one player owns the original release and the other owns the remastered collection.
Use this decision path before troubleshooting
- Read the exact product name. Record whether it is the original BioShock, the original BioShock 2, BioShock 2 Remastered, or BioShock: The Collection.
- Record the platform. Write down Steam/PC, PlayStation, Xbox or another platform. The documented launch procedure below is for an older PC release and should not be treated as a universal console or modern-Windows instruction.
- Define the mode. Decide whether you want the story campaign, a standard multiplayer match, or a private match with friends.
- Name the exact failure point. Separate “the multiplayer option is missing,” “multiplayer will not launch,” “no match is found,” “I cannot send an invite,” and “my friend cannot join.” Each points to a different cause.
- Check availability for that platform and version. Current service status for original BioShock 2 multiplayer is not established for every platform. A general connection error does not prove that matchmaking is operating or supported on your release.
Do this comparison for both players, not only the person hosting. A sender may have an original PC copy while the recipient has the collection edition, or one player may be looking at a campaign menu while the other is already in a multiplayer lobby. Record both sets of details before trying another invite.
If the multiplayer option is missing
You own the first BioShock
The original BioShock is listed as single-player. There is no documented multiplayer menu to restore, so reinstalling, changing NAT settings or sending another invite will not create a co-op mode.

You own BioShock: The Collection
The 2K announcement for The Collection states that it does not include BioShock 2 multiplayer. The remastered campaign in that package therefore cannot host the original game’s private matches or Steam-friend invites. Confirm the product name rather than treating the absent menu as a corrupted installation.
This limitation applies even when the collection contains a remastered copy labeled “BioShock 2.” The presence of the campaign does not imply that every feature of the original release was carried over. Do not use the collection’s single-player menu as evidence that multiplayer should appear after an update or reinstall.
You own the original BioShock 2
Check that you are launching the original multiplayer-capable release rather than the remastered collection edition. If the title is correct but the option is still absent, record the platform, storefront, installed edition and any message shown at startup before contacting support.

Also note whether you are opening the normal game executable or a separate multiplayer selection. An old PC manual describes a dedicated multiplayer choice in a pre-game Options window; that historical layout may not match a current launcher. The discrepancy itself is useful information for a support ticket.
If BioShock 2 multiplayer will not launch on PC
An older BioShock 2 PC manual gives this procedure:
- Open the game’s pre-game Options window.
- Select BioShock 2 Multiplayer.
- Launch the multiplayer option.
- If the game prompts you to relaunch, follow that prompt and start it again.
This is the manual’s procedure for that PC release. It is historical documentation, not a guarantee of compatibility with current Windows versions, modern launchers, remastered editions or console builds. If your current installation has no such option, verify the edition first; do not infer that a missing menu is a network fault.
When reporting a launch problem, describe exactly what happens after each step. For example, distinguish between an option that is absent, a launcher that closes, a relaunch prompt that loops, a menu that opens but cannot connect, and a message that appears only after selecting multiplayer. These are separate failure stages even if they all occur before a match is visible.

If you cannot invite a friend
Confirm that the destination is a multiplayer match
The documented invitation feature belongs to the original BioShock 2 multiplayer mode. It does not apply to the single-player campaign, the original BioShock, or the remastered collection edition.
Before selecting an invite command, confirm that both players are in the multiplayer portion of the original release. If one player is in the campaign, an invite control may be unavailable by design. If the intended activity is story progression, no documented co-op invitation flow exists to repair.
Confirm the friend-list context
The manual specifically describes inviting players from a Steam friends list. That instruction is tied to the PC release described by the manual. Do not assume that a console friend list, a different storefront account or a remastered edition exposes the same invitation path.
For a PC report, state whether both accounts are using Steam and whether the friend appears in the relevant friends list. For a console report, state the console and edition rather than copying the Steam procedure. Check whether the match is private
Private matches are described as being played exclusively with friends. If you are trying to invite someone into a public matchmaking queue, you may be using a different flow from the one described in the manual. Note whether the intended match is private before reporting the problem.
A useful description is “private match invite does not send” or “public matchmaking does not find an opponent,” not simply “co-op is broken.” The two activities have different destinations and different evidence. Include whether the intended match is exclusively for the listed friends.
Capture the failure precisely
Write down whether the invite button is missing, disabled, produces an error, appears to send but never arrives, or arrives but cannot be accepted. Also record both players’ platform, edition and account type. “Cannot invite” is not specific enough for a support diagnosis.

The point is not to assume a cause, but to give support a reproducible sequence tied to the exact release and platform.

If your friend receives the invite but cannot join
Compare editions and platforms
Both players must first establish that they are attempting to use the same multiplayer-capable release. A player on original BioShock 2 cannot use an invite to add someone through BioShock: The Collection multiplayer because that collection does not contain the mode. No official listing or manual establishes cross-platform support, so do not assume that different platforms can join one another.
Compare the full product name, not just the franchise name. “Original BioShock 2” and “BioShock 2 Remastered” should be written as separate entries in your notes. If the two entries do not match, resolve that edition question before investigating a connection error.

Does an empty matchmaking queue prove my router is broken?
