When BitLocker fails while you enable it on the Windows operating-system drive and reports 0x80070057 (“The parameter is incorrect”), Microsoft’s documented cause is a missing or incorrectly configured separate active system partition. Confirm that this is the operation that failed before changing anything: the same hexadecimal code can be produced by Windows Update and other unrelated tasks. Protect your recovery credentials, inspect the disk and BitLocker state, verify the firmware-specific partition and Windows prerequisites, then correct the configuration with supported Windows administration tools.
What BitLocker error 0x80070057 means
The title is often typed as 0X080070057, but the BitLocker error documented by Microsoft is 0x80070057. In the specific scenario covered here, you run manage-bde.exe -on against the operating-system drive and receive an error stating that the parameter is incorrect. Microsoft attributes that failure to the absence of a separate active system partition on the OS disk.

That diagnosis is specific to BitLocker enablement. Error 0x80070057 is a general Windows error value, so a message shown during Windows Update, a backup operation, setup, or another task needs that task’s own troubleshooting path. Do not repartition a computer solely because you saw the code; first identify which command or Windows screen produced it.

Partition changes and protector changes can make a bootable installation inaccessible if something goes wrong. Before attempting a repair, make sure you can retrieve the BitLocker recovery password or that your organization has escrowed it. The recovery password is a sensitive credential capable of unlocking the encrypted volume.

- On a personal computer, locate the saved recovery password associated with this device before proceeding.
- On a work or school computer, contact the help desk and confirm that the recovery information is stored in the organization’s approved system.
- Keep a current backup of important files. A backup is useful even when Windows still starts, because partition operations are difficult to reverse safely without one.
Do not store the recovery key on the volume being encrypted, in the root of a nonremovable drive, or on another encrypted volume. Those locations may be unavailable precisely when recovery is required.
Confirm the failing stage and collect a baseline
Use an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window. Record the output of each command before making a change so you can compare the state afterward or provide it to support.
- Check overall BitLocker status. Run
manage-bde -status. Note the operating-system volume, conversion or encryption state, protection status, and any volume identified as being in recovery. - List protectors on the OS volume. Run
manage-bde c: -protectors -get. This shows whether protectors already exist and helps you identify which recovery information must be preserved. - Check Windows Recovery Environment. Run
reagentc /info. The result should show whether Windows RE is enabled and where its recovery image is located. - Check the TPM. In PowerShell, run
Get-Tpm. Review whether the TPM is present, ready, and in the expected unlocked state for BitLocker. - Read the BitLocker volume view. In PowerShell, run
Get-BitLockerVolumeand save the reported volume status and protector information. - Review the BitLocker event log. Open Event Viewer and go to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > BitLocker-API. Look for events recorded at the time of the failed enablement attempt.
If these results show that the error occurred during a different operation, stop using the BitLocker-specific repair path. The code alone does not identify a partition problem.
Check the system partition and firmware layout
BitLocker normally relies on a separate system partition that contains boot information apart from the Windows volume. In the documented failure, that partition is missing or is not configured as a separate active system partition on the operating-system drive.

Identify whether the partition exists
Use Windows’ built-in disk-management tools to inspect the disk that contains the Windows volume. You are looking for a system-reserved or system partition separate from C:. Verify that it belongs to the same OS disk, has the expected boot/system role, and is not merely an unrelated recovery or data partition.
The exact labels and layout vary with the computer’s installation mode. Do not assume that a small partition is the system partition just because of its size or position. Compare the disk layout with the boot mode shown by the machine’s firmware and with the status reported by reagentc /info and Event Viewer.
Match the filesystem to firmware mode
| Firmware layout | System-partition filesystem expected by Microsoft’s checklist | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| UEFI | FAT32 | A separate system partition exists on the OS disk and is used by the UEFI installation. |
| Legacy BIOS | NTFS | A separate system-reserved/system partition exists and is configured as required for the legacy installation. |
A partition with the wrong filesystem, a partition on a different disk, or a partition that is present but not active when the applicable layout requires it can produce the same enablement failure. The required correction depends on the actual disk map and available free space.
Do not delete or recreate a partition casually
There is no single safe command sequence for every disk. A computer using UEFI/GPT has different boot structures from one using legacy BIOS/MBR, and a machine with multiple disks can place boot files somewhere other than the disk you expect. Do not delete, format, mark active, or recreate a partition until you have a verified backup, a recovery password, and a clear understanding of the firmware and disk layout.

If the system partition is absent or damaged, use supported Windows installation or recovery administration procedures appropriate to that layout, or have a qualified technician perform the repair. The objective is to restore a valid separate system partition without overwriting the Windows volume or its boot data.
Verify BitLocker prerequisites after the partition check
Windows RE must be enabled
The BitLocker troubleshooting checklist requires Windows Recovery Environment to be enabled. Use reagentc /info and confirm that the status is enabled. If it is disabled, resolve the recovery-environment configuration with supported Windows recovery tools before retrying encryption. A disabled or missing recovery environment can also make recovery workflows harder if the computer later asks for the recovery password.
The TPM must be in the expected state
Microsoft’s BitLocker guidance states that the TPM must be unlocked. Run Get-Tpm in an elevated PowerShell window and compare the result with the state expected by your Windows installation and organization. Do not clear the TPM as a first response: clearing it can remove or invalidate protectors and force recovery. If the TPM is unavailable, locked, or reports an error, document that state and follow the computer manufacturer’s or organization’s approved TPM procedure.
Check for policy or management controls
On a managed device, Intune or Group Policy can require settings that prevent a local BitLocker change. Collect a policy report with gpresult /h and inspect the BitLocker and TPM-related policy areas that Microsoft identifies for troubleshooting. A local administrator may still be unable to override an organization’s encryption, protector, or recovery-key requirements.

Ask the administrator to verify the applicable policy rather than repeatedly attempting encryption. Pay particular attention to requirements for recovery-password escrow, TPM use, startup authentication, and the permitted operating-system-drive configuration. If policy is the cause, the administrator must change or approve the setting; repartitioning will not solve a policy conflict.
Apply the least-destructive correction and retry
Once you have confirmed that the failed operation was BitLocker enablement, protected your data, and documented the current state, correct only the configuration that is actually wrong.
- Missing system partition: stop and obtain a layout-specific repair plan. The safe method depends on UEFI versus legacy firmware, GPT versus MBR, free space, and where the boot files currently reside.
- Inactive system partition: verify that the partition is the correct boot/system partition for this installation before changing its status. Marking the wrong partition active can prevent Windows from starting.
- Wrong filesystem: do not format the partition in place without a complete backup and a boot-repair plan. FAT32 is expected for the system partition on UEFI computers; NTFS is expected on legacy computers according to Microsoft’s checklist.
- Windows RE disabled: repair the recovery-environment configuration, then confirm the result again with
reagentc /info. - TPM or policy issue: resolve the reported TPM state or have the device administrator adjust the controlling policy. Keep the recovery password available before changing protectors.
After the correction, restart if Windows or the repair procedure requires it, rerun the baseline commands, and check the BitLocker-API log for a new error. Only when the partition, Windows RE, TPM, and policy checks are consistent should you retry the original enablement command, such as manage-bde.exe -on for the operating-system drive. Encryption can take time; do not interrupt a conversion that has started, and verify the final protection status with manage-bde -status.

Use this decision table to choose the next branch
| What you observe | Most appropriate next action | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears while enabling BitLocker on the OS drive, and no separate system partition is present. | Back up data, preserve the recovery password, and obtain a layout-specific system-partition repair plan. | Do not delete the Windows partition or create a guessed partition layout. |
| A separate partition exists but is inactive or uses the wrong filesystem for the firmware mode. | Confirm the boot disk and firmware mode, then correct the partition with supported administration tools. | Do not mark an arbitrary partition active or format it without a recovery plan. |
| The partition layout is correct, but Windows RE is disabled. | Repair and enable Windows RE, then verify with reagentc /info. |
Do not assume the partition is the only problem. |
| The TPM is not ready or is locked. | Document the TPM result and follow approved firmware, manufacturer, or administrator guidance. | Do not clear the TPM casually; protectors may require recovery afterward. |
| The device is managed by Intune or Group Policy. | Have the administrator review the BitLocker and TPM policies and recovery-key escrow requirements. | Do not repeatedly force a local change that policy will reject. |
| The code appeared during Windows Update or another non-BitLocker task. | Use troubleshooting for that operation and preserve the BitLocker configuration. | Do not repartition based on the hexadecimal code alone. |
If the computer is already asking for the recovery key
If Windows is locked at a BitLocker recovery screen, use the 48-digit recovery password associated with the device. Depending on how the computer is managed, it may be stored in Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, a saved file, or an organization’s help-desk system. Match the recovery password to the recovery-key identifier shown on the screen; entering a key for another computer will not unlock this volume.

A recovery key cannot be stored on the drive being encrypted, in the root of a nonremovable drive, or on an encrypted volume. If you cannot locate the correct password, stop guessing and contact the person or organization responsible for the device. Repeatedly changing firmware, TPM, or partition settings can create additional recovery prompts.
When repair-bde is appropriate—and when it is not
Microsoft documents repair-bde.exe as a block-level recovery option for a severely damaged BitLocker volume. It requires the recovery password or a key package and a separate destination for recovered data. Use ordinary drive and Windows recovery diagnostics first, because repair-bde.exe is not a general repair utility for every BitLocker enablement error.
It cannot repair a drive that failed during encryption or decryption. In that situation, preserve the recovery information and seek a recovery path suited to the exact failure state rather than assuming that repair-bde.exe will restore the original volume in place.
How to document the case for support
- Record the exact screen or command that produced
0x80070057. - Save the outputs from
manage-bde -status,manage-bde c: -protectors -get,reagentc /info,Get-Tpm, andGet-BitLockerVolume. - Note whether the machine boots normally, is at a recovery screen, or failed during encryption or decryption.
- Describe the firmware layout as UEFI or legacy and identify the disk containing Windows.
- Export or record relevant events under Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > BitLocker-API.
- State whether Intune, Group Policy, or another organizational control manages BitLocker.
This information lets support distinguish a missing or inactive system partition from a TPM, Windows RE, policy, or unrelated Windows operation problem.
