Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst check whether the problem is the PS5’s video signal or the game’s own rendering. Confirm the console’s output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then compare the RPG’s graphics modes and consult the game’s current support notes. A correct output resolution does not guarantee that a game is rendering internally at that resolution, and console output settings are not a universal fix for game-side blur or frame drops.
Identify what kind of problem you are seeing
Note whether the game looks consistently soft, becomes blurrier while you move, or instead flickers, loses signal, or reports an unexpected resolution or refresh rate. These symptoms help separate a game-rendering question from a display-signal problem; they do not, by themselves, identify a single cause.

- Soft or changing image during gameplay: check the game’s graphics options and current title-specific guidance.
- Flicker, blank screen, or unexpected output mode: investigate the HDMI connection, display settings, and signal path.
- Frame drops in the game: compare the game’s available modes in the same demanding area. VRR or 120 Hz is not a guaranteed performance fix.
Check the PS5 Pro’s output signal
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and Resolution to see what the console is sending to the display.
- Confirm the selected output is suitable for your TV or monitor. Sony says the PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution: How to change PS5 console resolution.
- If your display supports 1440p and you want to use it, select 1440p. Sony’s 1440p test can check SDR/HDR at 60 Hz/120 Hz and VRR; those are output and compatibility checks, not controls for an RPG’s internal render resolution.
If the console reports the expected output but the game still looks soft, move on to the game’s own settings rather than repeatedly changing the console resolution.
Test VRR and 120 Hz only when your setup supports them
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) adjusts refresh rate in real time when used with compatible games and TVs. Sony notes that results vary by TV. If gameplay behaves unexpectedly with Apply to Unsupported Games enabled, turn that option off and compare. The setting is a compatibility test, not a guaranteed way to remove frame drops.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz output for games and displays that support it. Test it separately from VRR; Sony advises turning it off if it causes video-output problems. A display’s ability to accept 120 Hz does not mean an unnamed RPG supports that refresh rate.
Troubleshoot flicker or an unstable high-bandwidth signal
If the issue is flickering, Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. Limiting the rate may improve picture quality, but it also restricts some output modes: both settings limit 4K 120 Hz and certain 4K color formats, with -2 restricting more of the listed modes than -1. Recheck Current Video Output Signal after changing the setting. This is a signal troubleshooting step, not an established fix for blurry game rendering or game-side frame drops. See Sony’s resolution and video-output guidance.
For an absent, unstable, or unexpected high-resolution or high-refresh-rate signal, work through the physical connection before buying anything. Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting guide recommends checking the HDMI connection and using the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 for its high-performance features.

- Connect the console directly to the TV or monitor to rule out a receiver or other device in between.
- Use the display’s HDMI port that supports the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use.
- Check for and install current display firmware.
- Inspect the included cable. Consider a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if troubleshooting points to a cable fault or capability mismatch.
Compare the RPG’s graphics modes in the same scene
Game menus and mode names differ, so use the options available in the specific RPG rather than assuming it has a particular PS5 Pro mode or known bug. If it offers quality/fidelity and performance choices, compare them in the same location and under similar conditions. Pay attention to:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Clarity: how stable and detailed the image looks, especially while moving.
- Smoothness: whether motion and frame pacing feel more consistent in a demanding scene.
- Display compatibility: whether the mode works with your screen’s resolution, VRR, and refresh-rate support.
Record the game version and check the publisher’s current release notes or support page for known issues or setting recommendations. Without the game’s identity and version, no particular mode, bug, or patch can be identified as the fix.
Use Enhance PSSR Image Quality only as a controlled comparison
PS5 Pro’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality option applies to certain PSSR-compatible games. Sony says it is on by default and can be changed under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. If the RPG is confirmed compatible, compare the same scene with the option on and off. Do not assume it applies to every RPG or that disabling or enabling it will resolve blur.
