Then adjust the headset’s position, fit and interpupillary distance (IPD); use an eye-relief adjustment only if your model has one. These checks address common causes of poor clarity, but the controls and manufacturer advice vary by headset.
1. Check and clean the lenses
Look for protective film left on either lens and remove it. Check for smudges, then clean the lenses with the cloth supplied with your headset. VIVE and Valve both recommend the provided cloth in their guidance for blurry visuals and lens care: VIVE’s blurry-display troubleshooting and Valve’s Index fit guide.
If the supplied cloth is missing or unusable, a clean microfiber lens cloth is a practical replacement. The cited manufacturer guidance does not endorse a particular third-party brand or cleaning fluid, so stick to the instructions for your exact headset and avoid household cleaners.
2. Reposition the headset and stabilize the fit
With the headset on, move it slightly up, down and side to side until the image looks clearest. Tighten the straps enough to hold that position comfortably. A headset that shifts while you play can move your eyes away from the lenses’ clearest viewing area.

VIVE says its display can look blurry when the headset sits too low. Its fitting guidance describes the bottom edge resting on the cheekbones and the rear strap cupping the back of the head. Valve’s Index guide likewise recommends holding the headset in the clearest position before tightening the head strap and top strap. Use the fit instructions for your model rather than assuming every headset sits or adjusts in precisely the same way.
3. Adjust IPD for your eyes
IPD, or interpupillary distance, is the distance between your pupils. If your headset has an IPD adjustment, change it while looking at a stable, detailed image and choose the setting that makes the image clearest. Do not assume one setting is right for everyone.

On Valve Index, use the IPD slider and its displayed setting. Valve recommends experimenting with the slider if you do not know your IPD. VIVE’s troubleshooting guidance also says to check IPD, though the adjustment method depends on the headset model.
4. Adjust eye relief only if your headset supports it
Eye relief changes how close the lenses sit to your eyes. Valve Index has an eye-relief knob: moving the lenses closer increases field of view, while moving them farther away creates more room for glasses. Adjust it to find a clear, comfortable view, particularly if you wear glasses.

Eye relief is not a universal control. If your headset does not have an eye-relief adjustment, do not force the lenses or look for an Index-specific knob; consult the fit instructions for your model.

For Valve Index, Valve advises checking the headset connections and restarting SteamVR if fitting adjustments do not resolve blurry visuals. These are model-specific steps, not a universal fix for every PC VR headset. For other models, use the manufacturer’s support guidance for that exact headset.

If the image remains blurry after the recommended checks, the available guidance does not establish whether the cause is fit, damaged optics or something else. Contact the headset manufacturer’s support service rather than assuming the headset is defective or trying unapproved repairs.
