How to Fix Blurry or Pixelated Custom Images in RPG Maker

By VGSources Team 10 min read

The fix depends on where the softness is introduced. Open the original image at 100% (native size), then compare it with a screenshot taken in the game. If the source is already blurry, recreate or re-export it at the size the game will display. If the source is crisp but the game view is soft, check scaling, bitmap filtering, project resolution, plugins, parallax layers, and the engine version.

For RPG Maker MZ pixel art, test nearest-neighbor scaling on the affected rendering path. MZ’s Bitmap API uses linear filtering when its smooth property is enabled and nearest-neighbor filtering when it is disabled. Nearest-neighbor keeps hard pixel boundaries, while linear filtering is often better for painted or intentionally antialiased artwork.

Compare the original at native size

  1. Open the original PNG or other source file in an image editor.
  2. View it at 100% or another true 1:1 view, not a zoom level that the editor has interpolated.
  3. Capture an in-game screenshot at the project’s actual display size.
  4. Compare the same edges, small text, diagonal lines, and transparent areas in both images.

If the original is soft at native size, RPG Maker cannot restore detail that is not present. Return to the original artwork, export a sharper version, or redraw the affected elements. If the original is crisp but the game screenshot is soft, the likely causes are scaling or filtering rather than the artwork itself.

Check the scope of the problem

What is blurry? Most useful first branch
One custom image Inspect that file’s dimensions, export settings, transparency, and the event, picture, tile, or layer that displays it.
Several custom images but default graphics remain sharp Look for a shared plugin, common display-size change, picture scaling, or layer configuration.
Default tiles, faces, and text as well as custom images Check the project version, core scripts, display resolution, and known asset defects before replacing individual files.

This separation prevents an image-editing problem from being treated as an engine problem, and prevents a project-wide rendering problem from being “fixed” by degrading every source file.

Use the intended in-game dimensions as your reference

Determine the size at which the asset is meant to appear before you resize anything. An image that is perfectly sharp at its original dimensions can look soft when the engine enlarges it by a non-integer factor. Conversely, reducing a detailed image can create blended edges or halos around transparency.

Do not repeatedly resize an export

Repeated resizing compounds interpolation damage. Keep the original artwork, make a fresh copy, and export once for the final use. If you only have a previously enlarged or reduced file, it may be impossible to recover the lost edge information; go back to the unscaled source whenever possible.

For pixel art, test integer enlargement

When a sprite or tile is designed as pixel art, enlargement by an integer multiple—such as 2×, 3×, or 4×—usually preserves a consistent block size. Use nearest-neighbor resampling for that enlargement. A fractional factor can make some source pixels occupy different numbers of screen pixels, producing uneven or apparently blurry edges even when nearest-neighbor is selected.

For painted or antialiased art, preserve the intended softness

Nearest-neighbor is not a universal quality setting. It creates visibly hard steps in artwork that was painted with soft brushes, antialiased outlines, or gradients. For that material, a filtered resize may be intentional. Judge the result at the real game size, not only in a magnified editor view.

Prepare a sharper custom image before importing it

Work from a clean source

  • Export directly from the original layered artwork at the target dimensions.
  • Keep important lines and small lettering comfortably larger than a single final pixel when the display size will be reduced.
  • Inspect the alpha channel around silhouettes, hair, foliage, and tile borders.
  • Remove unintended semi-transparent fringes that can blend with the map or backdrop.

Transparent-edge contamination is easy to mistake for blur. A pale matte color left around a cutout can become a halo when the image is filtered or scaled.

Use a pixel-art workflow when the project calls for one

RPG Maker Web’s custom-tile tutorial demonstrates a workflow in GIMP that includes indexing colors and scaling an image to fit a pixelated game aesthetic. That is an example of image preparation, not a rule that every RPG Maker asset must use indexed color or a pixel-art look. Use a limited palette and hard-edged tools when you want deliberate pixel clusters; keep full-color, antialiased artwork when that is the intended style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the final export, not just the editor canvas

Open the exported file at 100% and check it against the source. Look for changed color modes, softened outlines, missing transparency, and edge bleed from neighboring pixels. If an image is used as a tilesheet, inspect the borders between adjacent tiles: resampling can pull colors from the next tile into the current one.

Test bitmap smoothing in RPG Maker MZ

MZ documents a Bitmap smooth property described as whether smooth scaling is applied. Its implementation selects PIXI.SCALE_MODES.LINEAR when smoothing is enabled and PIXI.SCALE_MODES.NEAREST when it is disabled. Linear filtering blends neighboring pixels; nearest-neighbor chooses the closest source pixel.

When to try nearest-neighbor

Disable smoothing for a hard-edged pixel-art asset when the relevant MZ rendering path allows you to control that bitmap. Preview the result in the actual project window. Check both a normal view and a magnified view: the magnified view reveals whether pixel boundaries remain stable, while the normal view tells you whether the result looks correct to a player.

When to leave smoothing enabled

Keep linear filtering when the asset was designed to scale smoothly, such as a painted background, a soft illustration, or antialiased artwork. Turning smoothing off can make diagonals jagged and make a high-resolution illustration look harsher rather than sharper.

Do not assume an MZ setting applies everywhere

The documented property and implementation are evidence for MZ’s Bitmap path. They do not establish identical behavior in RPG Maker MV, VX Ace, older engines, or third-party plugins. A plugin can create its own sprites, apply its own scale mode, or redraw an image after the normal bitmap setting. For a non-MZ project, identify the engine and the specific display path before applying code or plugin advice.

Check scaling in the project, events, and plugins

Look for deliberate picture or sprite scaling

Review the event or scene that displays the image. A picture shown at a width or height different from its source dimensions is being resampled. Return it to its intended dimensions and test again. Also inspect any camera, zoom, screen-size, or resolution setting that changes the scale of the entire scene.

Test without optional plugins

Make a backup, then reproduce the problem in a copy of the project with image, camera, lighting, parallax, and post-processing plugins disabled. If the image becomes sharp, re-enable plugins one at a time until the responsible rendering path is identified. Record the plugin name and version when asking its author for help; a generic “RPG Maker is blurry” report omits the information needed to diagnose an override.

Compare at the project’s real display size

A desktop window may be enlarged by the operating system or by the editor, making the whole game appear softer than its internal framebuffer. Compare a native-size game window with a scaled window and with a captured screenshot. If only the enlarged window is soft, the asset may be rendering correctly and the additional window scaling is the cause.

Parallax and overlay projects need a layer-by-layer check

Parallax maps and overlay systems can combine images with different dimensions, filtering choices, and zoom factors. RPG Maker Web’s “Parallax Mapping in MZ: Basics and Tips,” dated June 10, 2026, discusses how pixelated and softer edges can behave when images are used across parallax and overlay layers.

Check that layers share a consistent scale

  • Verify the parallax image’s pixel dimensions against the map area it covers.
  • Check overlay images for a different export size or filtering mode.
  • Inspect the map zoom or camera scale used by the plugin.
  • Temporarily hide each layer to determine which one introduces softness.

If the base map is crisp but an overlay is soft, changing the tileset will not solve the problem. Prepare or configure the overlay separately, then test the combined scene for edge alignment.

Investigate project-wide blur in MZ

When built-in graphics are also affected, treat the issue as broader than one custom import. Check the installed MZ version, the project’s core scripts, the display-size settings, and any modified resources. Compare the affected project with a clean project created in the same engine version.

Understand the MZ 1.1.1 release notes

RPG Maker MZ version 1.1.1, released December 15, 2020, lists a fix for blurry tiles in Outside_A1 and World_A2. The same notes list a fix for text or faces becoming blurred when the screen size was larger than the default. These are documented defects in that release history, not proof that every blurry image has the same cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before copying files or core scripts, back up the project and compare the exact affected assets with a clean project. Updating unrelated project files can introduce compatibility problems, especially when plugins depend on a particular core version.

Use the map-save claim correctly

The MZ product information says its built-in map save function saves pixel perfect rather than resizing. That statement concerns built-in map saving; it is not a universal guarantee for custom pictures, parallax images, plugin-rendered layers, or every screenshot and display configuration.

Choose the remedy by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Action
Source is blurry before import Insufficient source resolution or a damaged export Re-export or redraw from the original at the intended display dimensions.
Source is crisp; only a scaled in-game copy is blurry Non-integer enlargement or reduction Use the intended dimensions, test an integer scale for pixel art, and avoid repeated resizing.
Pixel art is soft; painted art looks acceptable Linear filtering In MZ, test nearest-neighbor by disabling bitmap smoothing on the relevant path.
Only one picture or event is affected Event scale, picture settings, or that file’s export Reset its display dimensions and inspect the file’s alpha and edges.
Tiles, faces, and text are all affected Project resolution, core scripts, engine defect, or plugin Compare with a clean project, check the version, and review update notes before changing resources.
Base map is sharp; parallax or overlay is soft Layer dimensions or filtering mismatch Hide layers one at a time and correct the offending layer’s scale or export.

A safe step-by-step repair sequence

  1. Back up the project. Copy the entire project before updating core files, changing plugins, or replacing assets.
  2. Record the environment. Note the engine and version, project display size, asset type, source dimensions, intended display dimensions, and whether a plugin or parallax system is involved.
  3. Classify the symptom. Compare the source at native size with an in-game screenshot and determine whether one asset or many are affected.
  4. Restore the original artwork. Export once from the clean source at the intended dimensions. Do not continue resizing a previously resized file.
  5. Test the display size. Show the asset at its intended dimensions. If it must be enlarged, test integer multiples for pixel art.
  6. Test filtering. In MZ, compare smoothing enabled and disabled on the relevant bitmap path. Choose nearest-neighbor for hard-edged pixel art only when the preview confirms it improves the result.
  7. Isolate plugins and layers. Reproduce the issue with optional rendering, camera, parallax, and post-processing plugins disabled, then re-enable them one at a time.
  8. Check project-wide symptoms. If default tiles, faces, or text are blurry, compare with a clean project, verify the installed version, and review the applicable release notes.
  9. Re-test at the player’s view. Check a native-size window, the intended display resolution, and a screenshot. Do not judge only from an editor zoom level.
  10. Document the remaining case. Include the engine version, asset type, source and display dimensions, a source sample, an in-game screenshot, and the plugin or display-size details when seeking help.

Common mistakes that make the result worse

  • Applying nearest-neighbor to everything: this can damage smooth illustrations and antialiased interfaces.
  • Enlarging a low-resolution source and expecting new detail: scaling changes size, not the information contained in the image.
  • Resizing repeatedly: each export can add interpolation and transparency damage.
  • Replacing tiles before checking the version: a documented core or asset defect may be mistaken for a bad custom file.
  • Changing several plugins at once: you lose the ability to identify which rendering path caused the problem.
  • Ignoring transparent borders: matte-colored pixels around a cutout can look like blur after filtering.
  • Judging only a magnified screenshot: a pixel-perfect image can look blocky when enlarged, while a filtered image can look acceptable in a thumbnail but soft at the actual game size.
  • Assuming every engine behaves like MZ: filtering APIs and plugin paths are version-dependent outside the documented MZ implementation.

What to include when asking for technical help

A reproducible report is more useful than a statement that an image “looks pixelated.” Include:

  • Engine name and exact version.
  • Project display resolution and whether the game window is being enlarged.
  • Asset type: character, tilesheet, picture, parallax, overlay, face, or UI image.
  • Source dimensions and intended in-game dimensions.
  • Whether the source is pixel art, painted art, or antialiased artwork.
  • A native-size source preview and an in-game screenshot.
  • The event, scene, plugin, zoom, or camera setting that displays it.
  • Whether default tiles, faces, or text are also blurry.
  • Any recent engine, core-script, plugin, or display-size change.

Those details let another person distinguish bad source pixels, resampling, filtering, and a project-wide defect instead of guessing among unrelated fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical decision rule

Use the source-image branch when the file is already soft, the dimensions are wrong, or the export contains halos and blended edges. Use the rendering branch when the source is crisp but becomes soft only after import, scaling, zoom, a parallax layer, or a plugin. For MZ pixel art, nearest-neighbor is the relevant filtering mode to test; for smooth artwork, retain the mode that preserves its designed edges. For project-wide blur, verify the engine version and compare with a clean project before replacing assets or core files.
