A bthci.dll error is usually a Bluetooth driver or installation problem, not a missing app file that you should download separately. Windows uses Bthci.dll as its Bluetooth class installer to help install profile drivers. The safest repair is to work through Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter, radio and pairing checks, Device Manager, your computer manufacturer’s driver and firmware packages, and a complete power cycle. If the adapter still does not appear afterward, the problem may be hardware-related.
What bthci.dll does
Microsoft describes Bthci.dll as “The Bluetooth class installer (Bthci.dll) helps with installing profile drivers.” A class installer is part of Windows’ device-installation path. It is not a Bluetooth utility that you launch, and it is not a general-purpose application component.

That distinction explains why messages such as “bthci.dll is missing,” an error while installing Bluetooth, a vanished Bluetooth switch, or an adapter that cannot start commonly point to the same area: Windows cannot complete Bluetooth device detection, profile-driver installation, or communication with the radio. The visible message does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is a disabled setting, a failed pairing, a damaged or outdated driver package, firmware support, or a hardware fault.
Do not “repair” the problem by downloading a copy of bthci.dll from an unrelated DLL website and placing it in a Windows folder. A file from an unknown source may be the wrong version, may not match your Windows installation, and does not install the Bluetooth driver stack that the class installer is meant to manage. Use Windows components and an exact driver package for your PC instead.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
The quickest route depends on what you can still see. Check both Settings and Device Manager before deciding which branch to follow.
| What you observe | What it usually indicates | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth is missing from Settings, and no Bluetooth adapter is visible in Device Manager | The radio may be disabled, the driver may be absent, firmware may not expose the device, or the hardware may have failed. | Basic state checks, Windows Update optional updates, the manufacturer package, and a complete shutdown. |
| The adapter appears in Device Manager, but Windows shows a bthci.dll installation error | Windows is having trouble installing the Bluetooth class or profile drivers. | The Bluetooth troubleshooter, then an adapter-driver update or a clean package from the PC manufacturer. |
| Bluetooth is visible, but one accessory will not connect | The radio is present; the problem may be power, range, pairing mode, or a stale pairing record. | Accessory checks and removing and adding that device again. |
| The Bluetooth switch is present but devices cannot be found | The radio may be in a bad state or the driver may not be communicating correctly. | Toggle the radio, run the troubleshooter, update the driver, and power-cycle the PC. |
| The adapter has a warning icon or reports that it cannot start | Windows has detected the hardware but the driver stack is not operating correctly. | Record the adapter name, install the exact manufacturer driver, and apply available firmware updates. |
Fix bthci.dll and Bluetooth problems in order
Follow these steps in sequence. After each major change, test whether Bluetooth returns before moving to the next one. Keep the exact on-screen error and the adapter name available if you need manufacturer support.
1. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and search for the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and allow it to apply the suggested repairs. Microsoft also documents the classic settings route: open Settings, choose System, select Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters, find Bluetooth, and choose Run. Windows 10 uses the corresponding Bluetooth troubleshooter under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the troubleshooter finishes, restart if it requests one. Check whether the Bluetooth switch has returned and whether the adapter appears in Device Manager. If the tool reports that no Bluetooth hardware is present, continue with the hardware and driver checks rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
2. Check the radio and Windows’ basic state
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices on Windows 10. Confirm that Bluetooth is switched on.
- Turn Airplane mode off. On a laptop, also check the manufacturer’s wireless key or hardware switch; some models can disable the radio independently of Windows.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again. This resets the normal software state without changing your paired-device list.
- Confirm that the computer actually includes Bluetooth hardware. A desktop may require a built-in radio or a separate adapter; Windows cannot display a Bluetooth control for hardware that is not installed or exposed to it.
If the Bluetooth control is completely absent, do not treat that as a pairing failure. Go directly to Device Manager and the manufacturer-driver steps below.
3. Check the accessory before changing the PC
If the adapter is visible and only a headset, controller, mouse, keyboard, or other accessory is affected, verify the accessory first. Make sure it is powered on, charged, in its pairing or discovery mode, and close enough to the computer for the initial connection. A device that is already connected to another computer or phone may not enter pairing mode until that connection is ended.
When the accessory appears in Windows but repeatedly fails to connect, remove the old record and add it again:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices (Windows 10).
- Select the affected device and choose Remove device or Remove.
- Put the accessory back into pairing mode.
- Choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and complete pairing.
This branch cannot repair a missing bthci.dll installation or a Bluetooth adapter that is absent from Device Manager; it only removes a stale accessory pairing.
4. Inspect and update the Bluetooth driver in Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth. The adapter name commonly includes “Bluetooth” or “radio.”
- Right-click the adapter and choose Update driver.
- Choose the option that lets Windows search for an available driver and follow the installation prompts.
- Restart the PC if Windows asks you to, then check Bluetooth again.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon, read the device status text and note the exact adapter name. If the Bluetooth category is missing, use Device Manager’s View menu to check whether the hardware is being detected at all, then continue with the manufacturer package and firmware checks. Windows may not find a suitable driver through its automatic search; that result does not prove that the adapter is defective.

5. Install the exact package from the PC manufacturer
When Windows cannot find a driver, go to the support page for the computer’s exact model and Windows edition. Search for a Bluetooth or wireless driver package, not a random bthci.dll download. Laptop and desktop vendors often provide a combined wireless package or a model-specific Bluetooth package; install the one listed for your model and operating system.
Before installing, write down the model and current Windows version so you do not select a package for a different revision. Close applications, run the vendor installer, and restart when it completes. If the vendor supplies separate wireless and Bluetooth packages, follow its stated order. If the support page has no matching package, contact the manufacturer rather than substituting a file from another model.

Driver updates delivered as optional Windows updates can be separate from the normal monthly update check. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and review the available driver entries. Install Bluetooth-related entries that match your hardware, then restart and test.
Also check the PC manufacturer’s support page for BIOS, UEFI, or Bluetooth firmware updates. Microsoft identifies firmware and driver problems as common reasons Bluetooth is missing or disabled. Firmware installers are model-specific: use the package intended for your exact computer, keep the system connected to reliable power, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not interrupt a firmware update.
7. Perform a complete shutdown and radio reset
A normal restart can leave some hardware in a retained power state. Microsoft’s missing-Bluetooth procedure includes a complete shutdown:
- Save your work and close applications.
- Hold Shift while selecting Shut down from the Windows power menu.
- Wait about one minute after the computer turns off.
- Power the computer on and check Settings and Device Manager again.
Windows documents Bluetooth radio reset and recovery mechanisms for Windows 10 version 1803 and later, but recovery can depend on support in the underlying firmware or ACPI BIOS. Consequently, a successful software reset is not guaranteed on every model. If the radio remains absent after the manufacturer driver and firmware steps, the PC maker is the appropriate escalation point.

| Device Manager result | Next action | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Adapter appears normally and has no warning | Focus on the accessory: power, pairing mode, range, remove, and re-add. | The basic Bluetooth driver is loaded; the fault may be limited to a particular device or pairing record. |
| Adapter appears with a warning icon | Update it, then install the exact manufacturer package and any related firmware. | Windows sees hardware but cannot use the installed driver stack correctly. |
| Bluetooth category or adapter is absent | Check Airplane mode and hardware switches, install manufacturer drivers, apply optional updates, and perform the complete shutdown. | The radio is disabled, not exposed by firmware, missing its driver, or not responding. |
| Adapter disappears after every restart | Record the model, complete the firmware and driver checks, then contact the manufacturer. | Intermittent hardware or firmware behavior is possible; repeated reinstallations alone are unlikely to solve it. |
When the problem is probably hardware
If Bluetooth is still missing from both Settings and Device Manager after the troubleshooter, state checks, exact driver installation, optional updates, firmware work, and the complete shutdown, Microsoft identifies hardware malfunction as one possible cause. Contact the computer manufacturer with the model, Windows version, the exact bthci.dll message, and the steps already attempted. Support can determine whether the radio is enabled in firmware, whether the system has a replaceable module, and whether the hardware needs service.
A USB Bluetooth adapter is a possible fallback only after software, driver, and firmware recovery fail or the built-in radio is not detected. Choose a device whose manufacturer supplies a driver for your Windows version. Installing an adapter does not repair the original internal radio; it provides a separate Bluetooth device for Windows to install and use.
What not to do
- Do not copy bthci.dll from a DLL download site or another computer. The file must match the Windows component and the driver-installation context.
- Do not install a driver intended for a different PC model, Windows edition, or Bluetooth chipset.
- Do not assume that a failed accessory pairing proves the adapter or bthci.dll is broken; test another known-working accessory when possible.
- Do not interrupt BIOS, UEFI, or Bluetooth firmware installation.
- Do not keep repeating the troubleshooter when it reports that hardware is absent; move to detection, driver, firmware, and manufacturer-support steps.
After you have tried the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut: it scans more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, installs only official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, and provides driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card, then a subscription is required. Results vary, and it cannot resolve every hardware or firmware failure.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing Windows files when the adapter remains absent after the documented software path. At that point, the evidence is stronger for a disabled radio, firmware limitation, or hardware fault than for an isolated missing DLL. Give the manufacturer the adapter and PC model, Windows version, exact message, and whether the device was ever visible in Device Manager. That information lets support choose between a firmware setting, a replacement driver package, an external adapter, or hardware service.
