“Lag” in Buckshot Roulette can mean network delay, low FPS, stuttering, a frozen game, or a crash. Start by identifying which symptom you have: smooth local animation with delayed actions points to a connection or lobby problem, while choppy movement, audio crackle, or slow menus points to rendering or system performance. There is no confirmed universal official multiplayer-lag fix, so use the least risky checks first and avoid random port forwarding, registry tweaks, or paid “game booster” software.

Diagnose the symptom first

What you see Most likely category First checks
Actions register late, or opponents freeze while your animation remains smooth Network, firewall, or lobby connection Test Ethernet or a less congested Wi-Fi connection, pause downloads, check firewall permissions
FPS drops, camera movement stutters, or audio crackles GPU, Vulkan, overlays, or thermal throttling Compare single-player and multiplayer, update the GPU driver, disable overlays, lower graphics settings
The game freezes, becomes “Not Responding,” or closes Client instability, corrupted files, or a driver/software conflict Verify files, update drivers, close background software
Only one player has trouble That player’s PC or connection Compare wired and Wi-Fi connections, check GPU use, and review firewall or antivirus settings
Both players freeze at the same time Host, session, or service-side problem Create a new lobby and have the other player host
Single-player is fine but multiplayer fails Networking, firewall, or a multiplayer bug Restart Steam, check firewall permissions, and test a fresh lobby

Low FPS is not the same as high ping. A faster internet connection cannot repair a rendering bottleneck, and lowering graphics settings cannot repair packet loss.

Confirm you are troubleshooting the Windows Steam edition

This guide targets the Windows Steam edition of Buckshot Roulette, which lists Online PvP and requires Vulkan support on Windows. Steam lists Windows 10, a 64-bit processor and operating system, an Intel Core i3, 2 GB of RAM, and a relatively modern dedicated graphics card as minimum requirements; the recommended specification lists an Intel Core i5 and 4 GB of RAM. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee perfectly smooth multiplayer performance.

Unofficial multiplayer modifications, Linux or Proton installations, and other platforms may behave differently and should not be diagnosed with these Windows-specific steps. See the official Steam listing for the supported PC edition and requirements.

1. Restart Steam and update everything

Do this before changing network or graphics settings:

  1. Close Buckshot Roulette.
  2. Exit Steam completely, including its system-tray process.
  3. Launch Steam again and install any pending game update.
  4. Run Windows Update.
  5. Install the latest graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  6. Restart the PC.
  7. Create a fresh multiplayer lobby and test again.

Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Windows and drivers, verifying game files, and disabling non-essential software when a game behaves abnormally. These steps are particularly important if the problem began after an update or if the game freezes rather than merely showing delayed actions.

2. Verify Buckshot Roulette’s files

Damaged or missing files are more likely to cause crashes, missing assets, and freezes than ordinary high ping, but verification is a safe early repair:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click Buckshot Roulette and select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for the check to finish, restart Steam, and test multiplayer.

Steam notes that one or more files can fail validation because some local configuration files are not meant to be replaced. That message does not automatically mean the verification failed. If verification repeatedly finds problems, close other software that may be locking game files and run the check again.

3. Disable overlays and background applications

Temporarily close or disable non-essential software, then test one change at a time:

  • Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, and GPU overlays
  • Recording and streaming tools
  • RGB controllers and hardware-monitoring utilities
  • Third-party antivirus game-protection features
  • Steam downloads, cloud synchronization, and browser video streams
  • VPNs and traffic-routing applications

If disabling an overlay helps, re-enable applications individually to identify the conflict. Do not leave antivirus protection or the Windows firewall disabled permanently. A VPN can change routing, but it can also increase latency and add another point of failure, so it is not a default lag fix.

4. Check whether the problem is graphics or Vulkan-related

If movement is visibly choppy, single-player also stutters, or the game becomes unstable, treat the issue as local performance trouble rather than internet lag. Buckshot Roulette’s Steam requirements list Vulkan support on Windows. A PC can meet the CPU and RAM requirements and still have a faulty, outdated, or incompatible Vulkan driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run single-player for several minutes and compare its frame pacing with multiplayer.
  2. Update or cleanly reinstall the graphics driver.
  3. Disable overlays and recording tools.
  4. Lower resolution and any available graphical effects.
  5. On a laptop, connect the charger, use a performance power mode, and ensure the game is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
  6. Check for overheating or aggressive thermal throttling.

Lowering graphics settings can improve FPS, but it cannot fix delayed network actions or packet loss.

Optional community-reported OpenGL workaround

Some users report that this Steam launch option helps with certain Vulkan-related launch or performance problems:

--rendering-driver opengl3

This is an anecdotal workaround, not a confirmed official Buckshot Roulette multiplayer fix. It may reduce performance, alter visuals, or do nothing on your system. To test it:

  3. Enter --rendering-driver opengl3.
  4. Launch the game and compare it with the previous result.
  5. Remove the option if it provides no benefit or causes graphical problems.

Community report for the OpenGL option

Do not add undocumented commands such as fps_max unless they are confirmed for the current game build. Commands from another engine or version may simply be ignored or create new problems.

5. Test the network connection properly

If local animation is smooth but actions arrive late, rubber-band, or opponents freeze, use this controlled network test:

  1. Connect through Ethernet temporarily if practical.
  2. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and use a stable 5 GHz or 6 GHz network where supported. Congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi can add instability.
  3. Pause Steam downloads, Windows updates, cloud backups, and streaming.
  4. Ask other household users to pause large uploads or downloads.
  5. Create a new lobby.
  6. Have the other player host once. If the problem follows the original host, the host’s connection, NAT path, or session may be relevant.

Restart the router only when the issue affects multiple devices or persists across sessions. Changing Steam’s download region is not an established fix for in-game multiplayer latency; download delivery and a game session do not necessarily use the same route.

6. Allow Steam and the game through Windows Firewall

Firewall permissions may matter when multiplayer cannot connect, disconnects during lobby entry, or freezes while joining. An exception is not a guaranteed cure for high ping, but it is safer than opening arbitrary ports.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Firewall & network protection.
  3. Choose Allow an app through firewall.
  4. Select Change settings.
  5. Allow Steam and Buckshot Roulette on the appropriate private network profile.
  6. Test multiplayer, then remove an exception that does not help.

Microsoft says allowing a recognized application is generally safer than opening a firewall port. Do not disable the firewall permanently, forward random ports, or assume port forwarding is required: no authoritative game-specific port requirement is established here. If you use a third-party firewall or antivirus, check its application permissions separately.

7. Rebuild the multiplayer session

A stale lobby or one-off session failure can look like lag. Reset it cleanly:

  1. End the match normally if possible.
  2. Quit Buckshot Roulette.
  3. Exit Steam completely from the system tray.
  4. Restart Steam.
  5. Have one player create a new lobby.
  6. Re-invite the other player.
  7. Reverse host roles if possible.
  8. Test with overlays, VPNs, and background downloads disabled.

This is a practical reset procedure, not a verified developer fix. Its value is diagnostic: it helps separate a one-off session fault from a repeatable PC or connection problem.

8. Know when the problem is probably game-side

Stop applying increasingly risky local tweaks when all of these are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Single-player runs smoothly.
  • Both players freeze simultaneously, or the same problem appears in several fresh lobbies.
  • Switching hosts does not help.
  • Updates, file verification, overlay removal, and firewall checks produce no change.
  • Other players report the same behavior at the same time.
  • The issue began immediately after a game update.

That pattern can indicate a multiplayer build regression, session-infrastructure problem, or another game-side fault. It does not prove which one, and there is no current official confirmation in the supplied sources of a specific universal multiplayer bug. Reinstalling is a late-stage option after verification and driver/software checks; it is unlikely to repair an ISP, routing, or service-side problem.

9. Prepare a useful support report

When local checks do not resolve the problem, report enough detail for the issue to be reproduced:

  • Windows version
  • GPU model and driver version
  • Steam version
  • Buckshot Roulette build shown in Steam
  • Whether single-player is smooth
  • Whether one or both players are affected
  • Whether Ethernet changes anything
  • Exact error message, if any
  • Approximate time of the freeze, disconnect, or crash
  • Whether the issue started after an update

Use Buckshot Roulette’s Steam technical-support and community route for developer-monitored troubleshooting resources.

Shortest safe fix order

  1. Restart Steam and the PC, then update Steam, Windows, the game, and the GPU driver.
  2. Verify the game’s files.
  3. Disable overlays, downloads, VPNs, and non-essential background software.
  4. Compare single-player with multiplayer to classify the problem.
  5. If it is visual stutter, test graphics reductions and, cautiously, the community-reported OpenGL option.
  6. If it is delayed actions or disconnects, test Ethernet, a fresh lobby, host switching, and firewall app permissions.
  7. If both players still freeze in multiplayer while single-player is smooth, report the evidence instead of making increasingly risky system changes.
