It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: a faulty driver or system service, antivirus software, NTFS corruption, defective RAM or cache, and video-memory or other hardware faults can all produce it. Do not replace memory solely because the screen says 0x50.
Use the stop-screen details, Event Viewer, storage and memory tests, and—when necessary—crash-dump analysis to narrow the cause. The sequence below starts with low-risk evidence gathering and ends with advanced tools for cases that remain unexplained.

What Bug Check 0x50 means
Microsoft defines the stop code as follows: "The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA bug check has a value of 0x00000050. This indicates that invalid system memory has been referenced." In practical terms, a kernel component tried to use an address that is not valid or memory that had already been released. The component could be Windows itself, a third-party driver, security software, or hardware returning bad data.

Why the name does not prove bad RAM
The word memory describes the failed reference, not necessarily the physical part that failed. A graphics driver can pass an invalid address, a damaged NTFS volume can return corrupt data, or a failing memory module can alter instructions. A driver name printed on the blue screen is valuable evidence, but the stack can show the component that detected the fault rather than the component that originally caused it.

Windows version detail
On Windows 10 version RS4 and later, Microsoft documents that one subtype formerly associated with 0x50 can appear as parameter value 0x02 (NONPAGED_BUGCHECK_NOT_PRESENT_PAGE_TABLE). Preserve the Windows version and all four bug-check parameters when recording the crash; do not compare parameter values without that version context.
Capture evidence before changing the system
Record the complete stop-screen information
- Write down
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, the hexadecimal code0x00000050, any named.sysfile, and the four parameters shown on the screen or in the dump. - Note what was happening: launching a game, loading a level, installing an update, waking from sleep, browsing, or sitting idle.
- Record whether the first crash followed a driver, antivirus, Windows, service, application, or hardware change. Timing is one of the strongest clues.
Check Event Viewer
Open Start, type Event Viewer, and open the desktop app. Select Windows Logs > System, then inspect Critical and Error events immediately before and after the blue screen. Look for a repeated driver, service, disk, NTFS, or hardware source rather than treating one isolated warning as proof.
After a memory test, search Event Viewer for the source MemoryDiagnostics-Results. Keep the event details with your crash notes so that a later dump analysis can be compared with an actual hardware test.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Protect your files and create a recovery route
Back up saved games, documents, and other irreplaceable files before running repeated tests. If Windows can still start, make sure you know how to reach Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup (the wording can vary by Windows edition) or the Windows Recovery Environment. This matters because an incorrect driver setting can prevent a normal boot.
Use timing to choose the first manual fix
A driver or service is named
- Search the hardware or software vendor’s support page for a driver or service update that matches your exact Windows edition and hardware model.
- Install the update only after creating a restore point or another recovery option. Restart and test the workload that previously triggered the crash.
- If no update exists, temporarily disable the named driver or the related service in its own settings, Device Manager, or Windows startup controls. Test long enough to reproduce the original workload.
- If crashes stop, reinstall the component from the vendor’s current package or leave it disabled while you seek a compatible release. If crashes continue, re-enable it and investigate the next candidate.
A service or application installed immediately before the first crash deserves the same treatment: disable it, then reinstall it cleanly if the system becomes stable. A failure that occurs only during startup may require Windows recovery options rather than changes made in a normal desktop session.

Antivirus or security software is involved
Microsoft lists antivirus software as a possible 0x50 cause. Check for an update from its vendor first. If the crashes began after an update or installation, use the product’s supported uninstall or repair procedure temporarily, restart, and test. Do not run without protection longer than necessary; restore the security software or use another active protection method after the diagnostic comparison.
A Windows or application update preceded the crash
Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history to identify what changed. If a particular update aligns with the first failure, follow Microsoft’s supported uninstall or rollback option for that update and retest. Keep a record of the result; a rollback that makes no difference should not be repeated as a permanent fix.

Corrupted NTFS volumes are a documented cause of PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. Before checking, close games and other applications and ensure your backup is current.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
chkdsk /f /r. The switches request file-system correction and a scan for bad sectors. - If the system partition is in use, Windows will ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type
Y, restart, and allow the scan to finish without powering off the computer. - Review the result after Windows starts. If errors recur, run the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility and follow its instructions for the specific drive.
A clean check does not prove the drive is healthy under every workload, and a reported fault does not prove it caused every 0x50. Correlate the disk result with Event Viewer and the timing of the crashes.
Test RAM, video memory, and recently added hardware
Run Windows Memory Diagnostics
- Open Start and search for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems if you can close your work, or schedule the check for the next restart.
- Let the test complete. Windows will restart automatically.
- In Event Viewer, find the
MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsevent and read whether errors were detected.
Errors justify following the computer or memory manufacturer’s replacement procedure. If the test reports no errors, continue investigating software, storage, and graphics components; a single pass does not establish that every hardware condition is perfect.

Undo a recent hardware change
If you added RAM, a graphics card, an expansion card, a USB device, or a storage drive before the first crash, power down safely and remove or disconnect the addition. Retest with the previous configuration. A stable result points to compatibility, installation, or the new component, but it still needs confirmation with the manufacturer’s diagnostics.
Consider graphics hardware in game-related crashes
Microsoft includes video RAM among the hardware that can be involved. A crash that appears only when a game enters a 3D scene, changes resolution, or loads large textures raises the priority of the graphics driver and video-memory checks. It does not identify either one by itself: update or temporarily disable the graphics driver, test another workload, and compare dump evidence before replacing hardware.
Analyze a crash dump when the cause is unclear
Make sure Windows records useful dumps
Open System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings. Under debugging information, select a kernel or small memory dump option that your storage capacity can accommodate, and keep automatic restart disabled while diagnosing so the stop screen remains visible. Existing small dumps are commonly stored under %SystemRoot%Minidump; a kernel or complete dump can be stored as %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP, depending on the selected setting.
Use WinDbg’s first-pass analysis
- Install and open WinDbg from Microsoft’s debugger tools, then open the newest dump file.
- Run
!analyze -vin the command window. - Read
MODULE_NAME,FAULTING_MODULE, and the stack text. Note the trap frame and the referenced addresses shown in the verbose output. - List loaded modules and check whether the same third-party module appears in more than one dump.
- Compare the module with the timing, Event Viewer entries, and hardware-test results. A recurring module that also matches the trigger is stronger evidence than a one-time name on the stack.
WinDbg output is evidence, not an automatic verdict. Core Windows modules often appear because they detected an invalid reference; look for the earlier third-party driver or service in the stack and in repeated dumps.
Use Driver Verifier carefully
Driver Verifier can examine selected drivers in real time and deliberately stress their behavior so that a faulty module is more likely to be identified. Open Start, type Driver Verifier, and choose the standard settings. Select only the suspected third-party drivers, not every driver on the machine; Microsoft warns that verification adds overhead.

Restart and reproduce the workload once. If Windows begins crashing at startup, enter Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment and turn Driver Verifier off before continuing. Use the verifier management screen to clear the active settings, restart, and then inspect the resulting dump. Verify as few drivers as practical and disable the test as soon as you have enough evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Windows will not start normally
- Interrupt startup only as needed to reach the Windows Recovery Environment, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Try Startup Settings > Safe Mode. If Safe Mode works, uninstall or roll back the recently changed driver or service from there.
- Use System Restore when a restore point predates the first 0x50 and your personal files are backed up.
- If a storage or memory test reports a hardware fault, shut down and follow the component manufacturer’s replacement process instead of repeatedly forcing Windows to boot.
Do not keep Driver Verifier enabled while trying unrelated repairs; its intentional checks can make an unstable system appear worse and can prevent normal startup until the setting is cleared.
Compare likely causes instead of guessing
| Candidate | Timing or workload clue | Corroborating evidence | Manual check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver or system service | Crash follows an installation, update, or a repeatable hardware workload | Same module or service in Event Viewer and multiple dumps | Vendor update, temporary disable, WinDbg, scoped Driver Verifier |
| Antivirus software | First crash follows installation or security-engine update | Security component appears around the crash time | Update or temporarily remove using the vendor’s supported procedure |
| NTFS or storage corruption | Crashes accompany disk errors or file-access operations | NTFS, disk, or volume errors in the System log | chkdsk /f /r and the storage manufacturer’s diagnostics |
| System RAM or cache | Failures occur across unrelated applications or workloads | Memory Diagnostics reports errors | Windows Memory Diagnostics and the manufacturer’s replacement procedure |
| Video RAM or graphics hardware | Failure is repeatable during 3D games, resolution changes, or heavy rendering | Graphics-module evidence in dumps or vendor diagnostics | Update or isolate the graphics driver; run vendor hardware tests |
| Recently added hardware | First crash follows installation or connection | System stabilizes when the addition is removed | Remove, retest, then follow the manufacturer’s compatibility and replacement guidance |
This four-part comparison—timing, reproducibility, corroborating logs or dumps, and a diagnostic result—prevents a common mistake: replacing RAM solely because the stop code contains the word memory.
Common mistakes that prolong 0x50 crashes
- Blaming the named driver immediately: the displayed stack can be the detector, not the original corrupter.
- Changing several things at once: update one driver, service, or component, then retest so the result remains meaningful.
- Skipping backups before disk tests: a failing drive can deteriorate while diagnostics run.
- Running Driver Verifier on every driver: broad verification adds unnecessary overhead and can create a recovery problem.
- Ignoring version context: parameter interpretation differs for the documented Windows 10 RS4-and-later subtype.
- Treating one clean test as proof: an error-free memory or disk check lowers one candidate’s likelihood but does not eliminate software causes.
When to escalate or replace hardware
Escalate to the hardware manufacturer or a qualified technician when Windows Memory Diagnostics reports errors, storage diagnostics report a failing device, the crash persists with updated or isolated drivers, or the machine cannot remain stable long enough to collect evidence. Provide the stop code, parameters, dump files, Event Viewer entries, Windows version, hardware changes, and the exact workload that triggers the failure. That package is more useful than reporting only "blue screen 0x50."
If repeated dumps point to one third-party driver and the vendor has no compatible release, keep the component disabled only if the computer remains usable and the function is nonessential. For a graphics card, memory module, or storage device that fails its manufacturer’s test, replacement is justified by that diagnostic result—not by the 0x50 label alone.
