If Windows reports that calculator.dll is missing or Calculator will not open, do not download a DLL from a random website. Calculator is a Microsoft Store packaged app, so the reliable repair path is to repair or reset the app, restore its package registration, and reinstall the package if necessary.
What a calculator.dll error actually means
calculator.dll is best treated as a symptom label, not as a standalone file that you should hunt down and copy into System32. Windows Calculator is a packaged Microsoft application built with modern C++ and C# components. It is installed and updated through Microsoft Store, and its files, registration data, permissions, and dependent libraries work together as one package.

A Calculator launch failure can therefore happen even when a file named calculator.dll is present. Windows may be unable to activate the package, a package file may be damaged, an update may have left registration entries inconsistent, or another dependent DLL may have been removed, overwritten, upgraded incompatibly, or otherwise become incompatible. The visible message names one component while the underlying fault is often the app package itself.

Before you change anything
- Write down the exact error text or code. A missing-file message, a package-activation failure, and an error such as
0xc00007bcan point to different layers of the problem. - Note your Windows edition and build, whether the failure began immediately after Windows or Microsoft Store updated, and whether other packaged apps are affected.
- Do not download
calculator.dll,mrt100_app.dll,SharedLibrary.dll, or a similarly named file from an unverified DLL site. - Close Calculator and any Microsoft Store windows before using the repair controls or PowerShell commands below.
Calculator normally has little user data, but the Reset action can remove local app data. If you use Calculator as part of another workflow and need to preserve local settings, try Repair before Reset.
Repair Calculator from Windows Settings
1. Use Repair first
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Calculator. You can use the list’s search box.
- Select the three-dot menu next to Calculator and choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Repair.
- When Windows finishes, launch Calculator from the Start menu.
Repair attempts to correct the app without clearing its local configuration. It is the lowest-disruption action in this sequence. A September 11, 2024 Microsoft Q&A report described this exact Repair action resolving a Calculator failure that appeared after update KB5043076. That report is an individual case, not a guaranteed success rate, but it is a useful reason to try Repair before removing the package.
2. Reset only if Repair fails
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Calculator > Advanced options.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- After Windows completes the reset, open Calculator again.
Reset restores the packaged app’s configuration and can remove local app data. It does not download a random replacement DLL. If Reset fixes the launch problem, the failure was probably in Calculator’s configuration or package state rather than a missing file that needed to be copied manually.

Check whether the Calculator package is registered
If Repair and Reset do not work, check the package from a regular, nonadministrative PowerShell window. This command does not change anything; it reports packages whose names contain “calculator.”
Get-AppxPackage *calculator*
Microsoft’s packaged-app examples identify the package as Microsoft.WindowsCalculator. A normal result includes the package name, status, version, and an InstallLocation path. If the command returns a Calculator package, Windows still knows where the app is installed and you can try re-registering it. If it returns nothing, skip to the reinstall section.

Re-register Calculator without downloading a DLL
A package can be installed on disk while its AppX activation entries are damaged or missing. Re-registration rebuilds those entries from the package manifest.
- Open PowerShell from Start. Do not use “Run as administrator” unless Windows specifically requires it; the standard command is intended for a normal user session.
- Paste the following command exactly and press Enter:
Get-AppxPackage *calculator* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
- Wait for PowerShell to return to the prompt. If it displays an error, copy the complete text rather than guessing at a replacement path.
- Restart Windows and test Calculator.
This procedure uses the manifest already installed on your PC. It is appropriate when the package appears in Get-AppxPackage but activation is broken. It does not repair a package whose files are actually missing or corrupt; in that case, reinstalling is the next step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReinstall the Windows Calculator package
Reinstall through Microsoft Store
Use Microsoft Store when the package is missing, the registration command reports that the install location is invalid, or Repair and Reset have not restored the app.
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Search for Windows Calculator.
- Choose the Microsoft-published Calculator listing and select Install or Get.
- After installation completes, restart Calculator.
Store installation replaces the packaged app with a fresh copy obtained through the normal distribution channel. Confirm that the publisher shown in Store is Microsoft before installing.
Remove a damaged package before reinstalling
If Store cannot repair the existing package, Microsoft support material documents removing the package with PowerShell and then installing Windows Calculator again from Microsoft Store.

- Open PowerShell for your Windows user account.
- Run:
Get-AppxPackage *windowscalculator* | Remove-AppxPackage
- Open Microsoft Store and reinstall Windows Calculator.
- Restart Windows and test the newly installed app.
Uninstalling is more disruptive than Repair, Reset, or re-registration because it removes the current package before the replacement is installed. Use it only after those less invasive actions fail, and make sure you have a working Store connection and can sign in if your Windows setup requires it.
Use winget when Microsoft Store is unavailable
Windows may also obtain the Calculator package through winget. In Windows Terminal or PowerShell, search for the Microsoft Windows Calculator listing, review the publisher and package identity shown in the results, and install that exact listing. The package name and availability can vary by Windows edition and repository state, so do not accept a similarly named third-party result. If winget cannot find the Microsoft listing, use Microsoft Store or resolve Store access first rather than downloading a DLL file.
When a dependent DLL, not Calculator itself, is damaged
Microsoft’s DLL guidance explains that an application can stop running when a dependent library is deleted, overwritten, upgraded incompatibly, or otherwise fails dependency compatibility. Calculator may therefore display a DLL-style error even though its own package registration is intact.
For advanced diagnosis, Microsoft documents Dependency Walker as a way to scan an application and identify missing or invalid dependent DLLs. Use that information to identify the failing dependency; do not copy replacement files from an unverified website. System DLLs in protected locations such as System32 are subject to signature checks, and manually replacing them can create additional errors or leave the system in an inconsistent state.
Dependency analysis is most useful after the Calculator package has been repaired, re-registered, or reinstalled. If only Calculator fails, stay focused on the package. If several Windows apps fail with related DLL messages, record that broader symptom because it changes the escalation path.

Choose the next fix by symptom and disruption
| Action | Package present? | Best fit | Risk to user data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair | Yes | Calculator stopped opening, especially after an update | Low; configuration is normally retained |
| Reset | Yes | Repair did not help and the package configuration may be damaged | Medium; local app data may be removed |
| Re-register with PowerShell | Yes, with a valid install location | Activation or AppX registration is broken | Low; uses the existing package files |
| Store or winget reinstall | Missing or corrupt | Package files cannot be repaired in place | Medium; the current package is replaced |
| Uninstall, then reinstall | Present but unusable | Store cannot replace the damaged installation directly | Higher; package is removed before replacement |
| Dependency analysis | Usually yes | App-level repairs fail or several DLL dependencies appear involved | Low if used for diagnosis only; do not replace protected files manually |
The table’s “risk” describes disruption to Calculator’s package and local data, not a guarantee about every Windows configuration. A work-managed PC may also apply policies that prevent Store installation or PowerShell package changes.

Do not copy a DLL into System32
Copying a file with the right-looking name into System32 does not register a packaged app and may overwrite a protected or incompatible library. It can also turn a simple Calculator package problem into a system-wide launch failure.
Do not trust “one-click DLL” downloads
Unverified DLL sites do not establish that a file matches your Windows build, architecture, package version, or dependency chain. A file can have the correct filename and still be incompatible or unsafe. Microsoft Store, the package manifest already installed on Windows, and winget’s Microsoft listing are the appropriate sources for this app.
Do not treat one reported fix as a universal result
The KB5043076 case demonstrates that Repair can work after an update, but it is a dated user report rather than a controlled test. If Repair does not help on your machine, continue through the sequence instead of repeatedly applying the same action or deleting unrelated system files.

Record the update’s knowledge-base number and the first time Calculator failed. The dated report involving KB5043076 suggests checking the app’s Advanced options immediately after an update, beginning with Repair. Do not infer that every update-related Calculator failure has the same cause: an update can expose a registration problem, a damaged package, or a dependency compatibility issue.

If other Store apps began failing at the same time, mention that pattern when you report the problem. A Calculator-only failure points toward the Calculator package; multiple packaged-app failures suggest a broader Windows or Store state that needs separate investigation.
When to escalate the problem
Escalate after Repair, Reset, re-registration, and a clean reinstall have all failed, or when PowerShell reports errors you cannot interpret. Gather:
- The complete Calculator error message and any numeric code.
- Windows edition, build number, and system architecture.
- The date and update number associated with the first failure.
- Whether
Get-AppxPackage *calculator*returned a package and what status or install location it showed. - Which repair, re-registration, uninstall, and reinstall commands you ran, including their full output.
- Whether other Microsoft Store apps fail in the same way.
Microsoft’s official Calculator project directs users to report problems through Windows Feedback Hub or its GitHub issue tracker. Include the information above so the report distinguishes a package-registration problem from a missing dependency or a system-wide Store failure. Avoid uploading proprietary files or personal data unless the support channel specifically requests them.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that contribute to CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, and app-crash logs. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
Final decision
Start with Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Calculator > Advanced options > Repair. If that fails, use Reset, check the package with Get-AppxPackage *calculator*, re-register it from its manifest, and reinstall through Microsoft Store or winget when the package is missing or corrupt. Keep DLL downloads out of the process: Calculator is a packaged app, and restoring the package and its registration is safer than replacing files by hand.
