No official source reviewed identifies a specific cause or guaranteed fix for code 3.1. Start with the repair steps for your platform and copy type, then escalate with the exact error and any filename it shows.
First, identify what the error is attached to
Before changing anything, note whether you play on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox; whether the game is digital or on disc; and, on PC, whether it was installed through Battle.net or Steam. If the error names a file—such as an asset ending in .ff or .fp—write down the full name. These details help support narrow down the issue, but the filename alone does not establish a cause.
Players have reported the wording on digital installations as well as disc-based copies. Those reports are anecdotal: they show that “disc” in the message is not enough to diagnose a damaged optical disc, not what causes the error. Activision’s general crash guidance says games can freeze or crash for a variety of reasons, but does not specifically define error 3.1 or promise a fix. Activision’s Modern Warfare crash guidance was updated March 5, 2024.
On PC, repair files through the launcher you use
Battle.net
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
- Open the game’s options menu and choose Scan and Repair, then start the scan.
- When it finishes, launch the game again and check whether the error returns.
Steam
- Open your Steam Library and right-click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish before relaunching.
These are Activision’s launcher-specific file-repair recommendations. Menu wording can change as launchers are updated; if a label differs, use the current equivalent for scanning or verifying installed files. See Activision’s PC troubleshooting guidance, dated October 27, 2019.

Check software that can interfere
Close overlays, input-remapping tools, and recording software temporarily, then try launching again. Activision notes that background applications can interfere with gameplay or startup. Also check that your graphics drivers meet Activision’s recommended version and that your PC meets the game’s system requirements. Do not routinely turn off antivirus or firewall protection; Activision instead suggests adding the game folder to an antivirus exception list when appropriate.
On PlayStation or Xbox, update the system and check only the media you use
Install available system updates
Check for system software updates on your console before moving to more disruptive steps. Activision’s Modern Warfare crash guidance includes update checks for PS4 and Xbox One.

If you use a physical disc, inspect and clean it
Look for dust, scratches, or abrasions. For a dirty disc, Activision recommends a soft cotton cloth dampened with water: wipe in straight lines from the center toward the edge, then let the disc dry before putting it back in the console. Cleaning is relevant only to a physical disc; it cannot repair a digital install, damaged files, or a console problem.
Try the relevant cache steps
Activision includes clearing the cache among its Xbox One crash checks. Its separate cache guide also explains console cache steps. For PS4, it calls for fully powering down the console rather than using Rest Mode, unplugging it, waiting at least 30 seconds, and reconnecting it. For persistent Xbox One crashes, Activision also lists clearing the alternate MAC address as an option. This is general crash guidance, not a confirmed error 3.1 remedy.
Check whether a physical-disc problem follows the disc or the console
If you have a disc and the error continues after the basic checks, try the game on another compatible console if one is available. Activision suggests this test for persistent PS4 issues: if the same problem occurs there, the disc is most likely the issue. If it works elsewhere, contact the platform’s support team about the original console. For a digital copy, this disc comparison does not apply.

When the problem persists after platform checks, contact PlayStation or Xbox support as appropriate, or use Activision’s Modern Warfare support hub. Include your platform, launcher or storefront, digital-versus-disc status, the exact error text, and any filename shown.

A third-party guide suggests removing selected .dcache, .bak, .dat, and adv_options.ini files. This is not an official Activision fix, and the appropriate file paths and consequences are not established here, so do not delete files on that basis without first identifying the exact files and backing up anything that could contain settings.

Activision warns that deleting saved-game data is permanent and recommends backing it up first. Do not use saved-data deletion as an early troubleshooting step; consult the platform and Activision instructions before considering it.
