Start by identifying what you’re joining: a Java server, a Bedrock friend’s world, a Realm, or a LAN game. Each has different connection requirements. Then check that you and the host use the same Minecraft edition and a compatible game version; most failed joins come down to one of those basics, an unavailable host, or account and network settings.
First, identify the multiplayer game you’re joining
“Server” can mean several different things in Minecraft. Follow the section that matches your situation; a fix for a dedicated Java server may not apply to a Bedrock friend’s world or a Realm.
- Java server: You connect to an address supplied by the server owner, usually through the Multiplayer menu.
- Bedrock friend’s world: Your friend hosts a world and must be online with it available for others to join.
- Realm: A subscription-based shared world; invited guests can join without the owner being online.
- LAN game: Someone opens a world for players on the same local network.
Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and connection guidance differ by platform and game type.
Check your edition and game version
Make sure you and the host use the same edition
Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer families. Java players connect to Java servers, while Bedrock players connect to Bedrock worlds and servers; they cannot join each other directly through the standard multiplayer options. Check the host’s edition before changing network settings. Minecraft explains the distinction in its Java and Bedrock edition guide.

Use a version the server accepts
Update Minecraft on both sides and check whether the server supports your release. A snapshot or preview may not be compatible with a server running a different release. If you recently switched to a preview build, launch a compatible regular release instead. Minecraft recommends using the latest release and notes that version differences can prevent a connection in its Java multiplayer guide and Bedrock connectivity guidance.
If you can’t join a Java server
- Verify the endpoint: Ask the server owner for the exact IP address or hostname and any required port. Check for typos, extra spaces, or an outdated address.
- Try the connection menu: In Minecraft, open Multiplayer, then choose Direct Connection to enter the address once or Add Server to save it.
- Check whether the server is available: The owner must have the server running, and it must accept your game version. Ask whether another player can connect; if nobody can, the issue may be on the host’s side.
- Read the error message: A version warning points to compatibility; an unreachable server more often calls for checking the address, server availability, or network path. Share the exact message with the owner rather than guessing at a fix.

If you can’t join a Bedrock friend’s world
- Both players need to be online: Sign in where applicable, connect to Minecraft, and confirm the host has started the world and made it available for multiplayer.
- Check the friendship and invitation: Confirm you are friends through the relevant account system and that the host’s world or invitation is visible to you.
- Review multiplayer permissions: Account or family settings may block multiplayer. The account owner or guardian may need to allow it.
- Check console online access: Console ecosystems may require an online subscription for multiplayer. The specific requirement depends on platform and can change, so check the console maker’s current terms.
These steps apply to a locally hosted friend world. For a Realm, confirm that your account has a valid invitation or membership; the Realm owner does not need to be online for guests to play. Minecraft’s guides cover joining a friend’s Bedrock world and Bedrock multiplayer connectivity.
If Minecraft LAN does not show or join the world
- Connect all players to the same local network. A guest on a different network cannot join as a LAN player.
- Have the host open the world and enable its multiplayer or LAN visibility option.
- Make sure each player is using a compatible current version and the same edition as the host.
- Return to the multiplayer screen and check whether the host’s world appears. If it does not, verify the devices are truly on the same network and that the host has opened the world for LAN play.
Minecraft’s LAN instructions describe the local-network requirements.

If the basic checks don’t solve it
Test whether the device has a stable internet connection—or, for LAN, a stable local connection—and check Minecraft or platform service status if the problem affects multiple players. Minecraft identifies unstable connections, custom DNS settings, and port configuration as possible sources of multiplayer trouble. Avoid changing DNS or opening ports as a blanket client-side fix: those settings depend on the network, platform, and whether you host the server.
If you are only joining someone else’s server, ask its owner to check the host and server configuration before changing router settings. Port forwarding is relevant when you operate a server that must accept outside connections; it is not a general requirement for joining one.

- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
If you host the Java server
For a server you run yourself, troubleshoot the server rather than only the joining device:
- Confirm the server starts successfully and is configured for the version your players use.
- Check that the computer’s firewall permits the server application to communicate.
- If outside players need to reach a server hosted on your network, configure forwarding for the server’s listening port in your router. Minecraft’s Java server download page lists 25565 as the default Java server port; use the port actually configured for your server, not that number automatically.
- Keep the server runtime and setup compatible with Minecraft’s current instructions, and consult the official Java server setup guide.
Hosting from home can expose your public IP address to people connecting to the server. Do not post it publicly; share connection details only with people you trust. The official Minecraft server download page also provides the Java server software and setup information.
