Roblox chat usually stops working because of an incomplete age check, communication or parental settings, regional eligibility, an experience-specific configuration, a temporary moderation restriction, or a connection problem. Check the account and experience requirements first; reinstalling Roblox will not fix a blocked feature or a developer-disabled chat window.
The most common reason Roblox chat is not working is that the account has not completed Roblox’s required age check, or that communication is disabled by account, parent, regional, or experience settings. Check those conditions before reinstalling the app. Then determine whether the problem is that chat is missing, messages are being blocked, or Voice Chat is unavailable.

- Check whether Roblox is experiencing a wider outage on its official status page.
- Complete the account’s age check.
- Review Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication.
- Test chat in another experience.
- Try another device, browser, or network.
- Check whether Roblox has temporarily restricted the account from sending messages.
- Contact Roblox Support with reproducible details if the problem remains.
A green Roblox status page does not rule out an account-specific problem, a child-account restriction, a regional limitation, or an experience where the developer has disabled chat.

1. Check Roblox’s service status
Open the official Roblox Status page and look for incidents affecting the website, mobile app, games, or game joining. If many players suddenly lost chat at the same time, an outage is a plausible explanation.

If the status page says all systems are operational, continue troubleshooting. A status page reports broad service health; it cannot tell whether your account failed an age check, a parent disabled communication, or one particular experience turned chat off.
2. Complete Roblox’s age check
Roblox requires an age check before communication features can be accessed or enabled. This affects Experience chat, Voice Chat, and friend or direct communication. Open the Roblox account’s communication or privacy settings and complete the age-check process that Roblox presents.
Until the check is complete, chat controls may be missing or may not stay enabled. After completing it, sign out of Roblox, sign back in, and test chat again.

For example, users ages 5–9 need parental consent for Experience chat, while users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. These requirements can change by feature and location, so completing the age check does not guarantee that every communication feature will be available.
Important: Phone verification is not a substitute for the current Voice Chat age-check requirements.
3. Turn on the correct communication setting
On the account that cannot use chat, open:
Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat
Check that Experience chat is allowed. Roblox’s labels can vary slightly by account, app version, region, and rollout, but look for the Communication section and the Experience chat control.
For a child account, the linked parent account may control this setting through Parental Controls. A parent should verify that:

- The child’s age check is complete.
- Experience chat is permitted.
- Direct or friend-chat permissions are allowed where the child is eligible.
- The account is not restricted from communication or public commenting.
- Regional and age-group rules do not prevent the requested feature.
Account communication settings can limit interactions to friends or disable interactions altogether. Restricting an account can turn off chat and public commenting, so changing an in-game control will not override a parent or account-level restriction.
4. Test another Roblox experience
Experience chat is not guaranteed to appear in every Roblox game. The developer decides whether to enable the standard chat interface. If chat works normally in one experience but is absent in another, your account is probably not the problem.
On a computer, the normal shortcut for opening Experience chat is the / key. On phones, tablets, consoles, and other devices, use the chat icon or the in-experience control provided by Roblox.

Roblox creators control the default chat interface through TextChatService, including its ChatWindowConfiguration and ChatInputBarConfiguration settings. There is no player-side fix for a developer-disabled chat window.
Test a well-known experience where chat is normally available. If chat is missing everywhere, return to the age-check, account-setting, and parental-control steps above.
5. Fix the computer keyboard shortcut
If chat is available but pressing / does nothing on a computer, try the backslash () key. International keyboard layouts can interfere with Roblox’s usual shortcut.
Roblox also suggests changing the keyboard region and format to English (United States) as a possible workaround. This can affect other programs, so restore your preferred layout afterward if necessary.

- The account has not completed its age check.
- Privacy or parental settings disable communication.
- Roblox has temporarily restricted the account.
- The experience developer disabled the chat interface.
6. If chat opens but messages will not send
Tell a filter problem from a connection problem
If Roblox changes a message into #####, the text filter usually blocked the content. Roblox filters inappropriate language, personal information, and other restricted text. It may also automatically rephrase some profanity or unsafe wording.
Try a short, ordinary message such as “hi”. If ordinary messages work but certain phrases become hashtags, the chat system is functioning and the blocked content needs to be reworded. Do not try to evade the filter by repeatedly sending variations of content that violates Roblox rules.
Check for a temporary chat restriction
Roblox’s Text Chat Nudge system can temporarily prevent an account from sending messages after repeated attempts to send content that violates its policies. Repeated violations can lead to longer restrictions or additional account action.
If every message fails while the chat interface still appears, stop repeatedly retrying the same text. Test a normal message later and check for any Roblox notification explaining the restriction. If the account appears to be restricted incorrectly, contact Roblox Support rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
Test the connection and software
When the problem follows the device or network rather than the account, work through these tests:
- Try another experience. This separates an experience-specific problem from a general connection issue.
- Try another supported browser if you play through a browser, and make sure it is current.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, and script-blocking extensions. Re-enable them one at a time after testing.
- Check the wireless connection. An unstable connection can let a game load while preventing chat messages from being sent reliably.
- Test another network, such as a phone hotspot where permitted. If chat works there, the original router, firewall, school, work, or public network may be filtering Roblox traffic.
- Review firewall and antivirus rules. Make sure Roblox and the browser are not being blocked.
- Restart the app or browser after changing permissions or network settings.
- Reinstall Roblox if the failure follows the installation on one device.
Do not install PC-cleaner or “chat repair” software to solve an age-check, parental-control, moderation, regional, or developer-setting problem. Those conditions are controlled by Roblox or the experience, not by general Windows optimization.
7. Fix friend and direct chat
Friend communication is separate from Experience chat and has its own eligibility rules. Open:
Settings → Privacy & content maturity → Communication → Chat and Party with friends

Depending on the account’s eligibility and Roblox’s regional rollout, the available choices may include All friends, Trusted friends, or No one. Roblox may label this area Chat or Party; both refer to the general friend-communication area.
Current age-group rules described by Roblox include:
- Under 9: Direct messages and chat with friends outside games are unavailable.
- Ages 9–12: Text and group chat with trusted friends may be available with safety filters.
- Ages 13 and older: Text and group chat with trusted friends may be available without those filters, subject to age-check, account, regional, and other eligibility requirements.
If the setting is missing or cannot be changed, check the age check and have the linked parent account review Parental Controls. A parent’s restriction, a regional rule, or the account’s age group can prevent direct chat even when Experience chat works.
8. Fix Roblox Voice Chat
Voice Chat is not the same as text chat. Eligible users must generally be at least 13, complete an age check, be located in a supported region, and join an experience whose developer supports Voice Chat. It will not appear in every Roblox experience.
If you meet those conditions, open the in-experience settings and look for the Voice Chat toggle. If the toggle is missing after the age check, regional availability or experience support may be the reason.
If Voice Chat appears but nobody can hear you, check:
- Roblox’s microphone mute control.
- The operating system’s microphone permission for Roblox or the browser.
- Whether the correct microphone is selected.
- Whether the microphone is muted by a physical switch or headset control.
- Whether the microphone works in another Voice Chat-enabled experience.
A gaming headset with a working microphone can help when the problem is genuinely audio hardware, but it will not enable Voice Chat, bypass an age check, change regional availability, or fix an experience that does not support Voice Chat.

Contact Roblox Support if chat fails across multiple experiences and devices after you have checked the age check and communication settings, if the age-check process fails, if the account appears to be muted or restricted incorrectly, or if the issue continues after testing another network and reinstalling Roblox.

Include enough information for Support to reproduce the problem:
- Roblox username.
- Device model and operating-system version.
- Roblox app or browser version, if relevant.
- The exact error message or what happens when you send a message.
- The experience names where the problem occurs.
- Whether chat works in any other experience.
- The steps that reproduce the failure.
- Recent changes to the device, browser, router, account, or parental settings.
“Chat is broken” is less useful than a report such as: “Experience chat is missing in every experience on an Android phone, the age check is complete, the parent allows communication, and the same account has the problem on a second network.”
