Start by identifying when the problem happens: on launch, at a repeatable scene or action, as uneven stuttering, or as consistently low average FPS. Those symptoms do not have one established shared cause, and the official information does not provide a universal fix. Record your game version, storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage type, resolution, graphics preset, upscaler and frame-generation settings, and the exact point of failure. Then change one setting at a time so you can tell whether anything actually helped.
That distinction matters because the documented developer advice is narrow: it concerns a particular Sirene cutscene crash and an older Steam-overlay startup issue. Neither report explains every current crash, hitch, or low frame rate. Before changing settings or buying hardware, check whether your setup and symptom actually match one of those cases and compare your PC with the published requirements.

First, identify which problem you are troubleshooting
A crash or freeze, stuttering, and low FPS are different observations. Pinpointing which one you have helps you choose a relevant next step instead of applying unrelated tweaks. Be precise about whether the game exits to desktop, displays an error, stops responding, or continues running with uneven motion.
- Clair Obscur crashes on startup: the game closes, displays an error, or stops responding before you can play. Note whether the launcher appears, whether the game reaches a title screen, and whether the failure happens every time.
- The game crashes at a particular point: it fails during a specific scene, after an action, or at the same point each time. Note whether the failure is a crash to desktop or a freeze that does not recover. A repeatable scene or action is useful information; it does not by itself establish the cause.
- Stuttering: motion or gameplay feels uneven, even if the FPS counter’s average seems adequate. A stable-looking average does not by itself describe how smoothly frames arrive. Record whether it is continuous, occasional, or limited to one area.
- Low FPS: the game runs at a persistently low frame rate rather than showing only brief hitches. Compare the result with the resolution and graphics settings you are using, not just a target listed for different conditions.
If the issue is intermittent, describe what happens immediately beforehand and whether repeating the same action reproduces it. A failure that occurs every time after one scene is a more specific lead than a general report that the game “sometimes crashes.” Also note whether a recent game update or a change in settings preceded the problem, without assuming that timing alone proves a connection.

Collect the details that make a diagnosis possible
Before changing settings, write down the current setup and symptom. This gives you a baseline and makes it possible to compare results after one change. Capture the exact error text if one appears. If you contact support, a clear description of the reproduction steps is more useful than a list of unrelated tweaks that have already been tried.
- Game version or build and storefront.
- Windows version.
- CPU, GPU and its VRAM, and installed RAM.
- Whether the game is installed on an SSD or another drive type.
- Resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate limit, and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.
- What happens, where it happens, and whether the same steps reproduce it.
For a specific scene-related failure, also record the approximate frame rate and relevant graphics features at that point. For stuttering or low FPS, note whether the behavior is constant or limited to particular areas. Include the exact sequence leading to a repeatable failure—for example, which scene or action immediately preceded it—rather than only saying that the game crashed.
Keep the comparison controlled. If you change the resolution, preset, frame cap, and frame-generation setting all at once, a different result will not tell you which change mattered. Write down the original settings, change one relevant item, retry the same section if practical, and record the outcome. If nothing changes, restore the baseline before testing something else.
Compare your PC with the published requirements
Steam’s PC listing, accessed October 11, 2026, states the following requirements and targets. The FPS figures are the store’s stated targets for their respective tiers—not guarantees for every scene, configuration, or resolution.

Use the table to spot a clear mismatch, not to assume that meeting the recommended tier rules out a problem. The listing does not promise the same results at higher resolutions, in every area, or with different settings. Keep the resolution and preset attached to any comparison: Steam’s minimum-tier figure is 1080p at 30 FPS on low, while its recommended-tier figure is 1080p at 60 FPS on high. Neither number is an expected result for a different workload.
Check each category separately rather than reducing the comparison to “my PC meets the specs.” A processor, graphics card and RAM amount can be compared with the corresponding tier; storage has its own requirement; and the operating-system entries differ between minimum and recommended. The published list does not provide a model-by-model performance ranking beyond those entries, nor does it identify a part that should be upgraded to fix an undiagnosed issue.

If you are considering a storage change, first confirm whether the game is already on an SSD and whether your PC supports the drive you are considering. Compare the drive against your system’s interface, form factor, and available capacity before spending money. Steam marks an SSD as required; it does not name a recommended SSD model or say that installing one cures crashes, stuttering, or low FPS. If your machine already meets the storage requirement, the listing gives no basis for treating a more expensive drive as a guaranteed fix.
Crashes after the Sirene fight: check whether the historical case matches
Sandfall Interactive documented a narrow crash or indefinite freeze after the Sirene battle cutscene. The report concerned NVIDIA 40- and 50-series graphics cards with NVIDIA Frame Generation enabled; it also described some cases above 160 FPS when Frame Generation was disabled. These details matter: the report is not evidence that other crashes, GPUs, scenes, or performance problems have the same cause.
Ask yourself whether the failure happens after defeating Sirene, whether it is a crash or a freeze that continues indefinitely, which GPU family is installed, whether NVIDIA Frame Generation is on, and what frame rate or frame cap is in use. A crash elsewhere in the game or on a different configuration may still deserve a report, but the Sirene post does not establish a fix for it. The 160 FPS figure belongs to the reported cases; it is not a general threshold at which every PC becomes unstable.
In its January 28 developer post, Sandfall’s temporary advice for players matching that case was to turn off NVIDIA Frame Generation or cap the game at 120 FPS. Treat either as a reversible test, not as a general fix. Change one setting, retry the same sequence if practical, and note whether the crash or freeze recurs. If Frame Generation is already off, the post’s report of some cases above 160 FPS makes the frame cap a separate test to consider for a matching Sirene failure. Do not assume the same adjustment applies to unrelated stuttering or low FPS.
There is a later status update. Patch 1.5.3, dated March 17, 2026, says: “After a thorough internal investigation, the crash that occurred after defeating Sirene can no longer be reproduced on our end.” The notes advise updating Windows if the issue continues and submitting a report so it can be investigated further. That statement describes the developers’ reproduction result; it does not establish that every affected player’s PC was fixed or that Windows was confirmed as the cause.

Clair Obscur crashes on startup
Keep a launch crash separate from the Sirene cutscene case. On April 24, 2025, the Sandfall Team reported deploying a fix for a specific startup crash affecting players who had Steam Overlay disabled, and asked those users to verify their game files through Steam. That is historical, configuration-specific guidance—not proof that a current launch failure has the same cause.

- Record your current game build and confirm that the symptom happens before gameplay begins.
- Check whether your setup matches the reported condition: a Steam copy with Steam Overlay disabled.
- If it does, make sure you are on the current game build, then use Steam’s game-file verification option and retry. The old developer note does not establish that this will resolve unrelated startup crashes.
- If the crash remains, preserve the error text and your system details rather than moving straight to unrelated configuration changes.
The reason to keep this step conditional is that the developer’s April 24, 2025 note described a particular issue and a fix deployed at that time. It is not a current diagnosis for every storefront or every startup failure. If your copy is not on Steam, or Steam Overlay was not disabled, that historical note does not describe your configuration. Make sure the game is current before comparing your experience with an older launch-day statement.
Stuttering: test frame pacing without assuming a cause
The official sources cited here do not establish a general cause or verified remedy for stuttering. First note where it occurs and whether the behavior is continuous or tied to a particular scene. Then make a controlled test: change one graphics setting or optional feature at a time, repeat the same section, and compare the result with your original baseline.
Sandfall’s July 30, 2025 announcement for patch 1.4.0 says the update added Frame Generation and Low Latency for compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. The announcement described support for compatible hardware; it did not promise that either feature would remove stutter on every system. These are optional, hardware-dependent features, so record whether they are enabled and make sure the comparison uses the same scene and other settings.

Low Latency is also a listed feature, not a general-purpose troubleshooting guarantee. If you are reproducing the documented Sirene issue, follow the narrower developer advice for that case rather than treating either feature as a universal stutter fix.
- Keep resolution, preset, and the section being tested consistent between attempts.
- Record the frame limit and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.
- Change one variable, repeat the same section, and note whether the stutter changes reproducibly.
- If a change makes no clear difference, restore the previous setting before testing another one.
Compare options by relevance and risk, not by claims of success that the official notes do not make. A temporary in-game setting change that matches the symptom is easier to evaluate and reverse than an unrelated system change. There are no substantiated comparative success rates for these tests, so the useful question is whether your own repeatable result changed under controlled conditions.
Low FPS on PC: set expectations before changing hardware
Compare your result with Steam’s stated target for the matching tier: 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings for minimum requirements, or 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings for recommended requirements. Those figures are not a performance guarantee for a different resolution or scene. Make sure you are comparing like with like before concluding that a component is underperforming.

If FPS is persistently low, record your current resolution, preset, frame limit, and optional graphics features. Test one reversible setting change at a time and use the same area or sequence for each comparison. Distinguish a consistently low reading from a brief dip or hitch; the latter is closer to a stuttering or frame-pacing complaint. The official material does not provide a universal low-FPS setting, benchmark, or expected uplift from an upgrade, so avoid treating a particular tweak or purchase as a proven remedy.

An SSD is the only storage requirement established in Steam’s listing. If the game is not installed on an SSD, that is a requirements gap worth addressing only after checking drive compatibility and your system’s capacity for an upgrade. The listing does not claim that an SSD is an FPS booster or a fix for instability. Likewise, the listed CPU and GPU tiers can help identify a mismatch, but the official information does not justify buying a particular component to solve an undiagnosed low-FPS problem.

- Classify the symptom. Decide whether the game fails at startup, at a repeatable scene, or whether the complaint is stuttering or persistently low FPS. Separate a crash to desktop from a freeze.
- Write down the baseline. Capture the game build, storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, drive type, resolution, preset, frame cap, and optional graphics settings.
- Check requirements. Compare the PC with Steam’s listed CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system, and SSD requirements. Keep the stated resolution and quality conditions attached to its performance targets.
- Look for a matching developer-documented case. The Sirene advice applies to the described scene and GPU/Frame Generation/FPS conditions. The startup note applies to the historical Steam Overlay condition.
- Choose a relevant, reversible test. For the documented Sirene case, the temporary advice was to disable NVIDIA Frame Generation or cap FPS at 120. For the older startup case, verify files only when the Steam-overlay condition matches. Do not transfer these steps to unrelated symptoms without evidence.
- Change one variable and repeat. Retry the same scene or sequence, then record whether the outcome changed. Restore a setting if there is no clear difference before trying another.
- Escalate with useful details. If the problem persists, include error text or logs you can collect, the exact reproduction point, your game and Windows versions, and the configuration details above in a report to the game’s support channel.
This sequence is meant to make a report interpretable, not to promise a cure. Matching the symptom to a developer note is useful because the developers have issued symptom-specific fixes before; it does not mean an older case explains a player’s current issue. If none matches, a reproducible description and system details are a better next step than an unsupported collection of changes.
What not to assume
- A crash at a different scene is not automatically the Sirene issue.
- A PC meeting recommended requirements is not proof that a particular crash or stutter has a single known cause.
- Enabling Frame Generation is not a demonstrated fix for low FPS or uneven frame pacing.
- An SSD is required by the listing, but the official requirements do not promise that changing drives will fix crashes or improve FPS.
- The historical launch-day verification advice and Sirene workaround should not be generalized to symptoms or setups that do not match their reports.
- A named part in the requirements table is a comparison point, not a recommendation to buy hardware. Check compatibility and the actual requirements gap before considering a purchase.
Official material establishes specific requirements and symptom-specific historical notes, but no all-purpose fix for PC crashes, stuttering, or low FPS. Match your symptom to a documented case if one fits, make controlled tests, and report a reproducible problem with the configuration details needed to investigate it.

Can I fix a Clair Obscur startup crash by verifying game files?
Sandfall’s April 24, 2025 launch update asked Steam players affected by a particular startup crash—with Steam Overlay disabled—to verify game files after a fix was deployed. This is historical, Steam-specific guidance, not a proven fix for every current launch crash. Check that your game is current and that your setup matches the reported condition.
Will Frame Generation fix stuttering or low FPS?
