Low FPS points to hardware, settings or background load; stutter can be frame-pacing, API or memory pressure; artifacts and overheating suggest graphics hardware or airflow; crashes need files, drivers and stability checks; high ping, packet loss and rubberbanding are network problems. Measure the right signal first, change one factor, then retest the same scene.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Use timing and scope to classify what you see. A frame-rate counter, frame-time graph, temperature reading, ping value and packet-loss indicator tell you more than a general feeling that a match is “laggy.” Note whether the issue is constant or intermittent, appears immediately or only after a long session, affects one game or several, and follows a specific map, mode or update.

| Symptom | First signal to check | Most relevant subsystem |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS or sudden FPS drops | Average FPS and frame time in the same scene | GPU/CPU load, graphics settings, drivers, background programs and system requirements |
| Stutter or hitching | Frame-time spikes, memory use and when the hitch occurs | Game optimization, graphics API, driver conflicts, storage or memory pressure |
| Artifacts, black screens or tearing | Whether the visual fault persists outside one game and the GPU temperature | Graphics settings, driver, GPU load, temperature or hardware |
| Crashing or freezing | Exact error, start date, crash dump and recent changes | Game files, drivers, Windows, overclocks, security software or hardware stability |
| High ping, packet loss or rubberbanding | In-game latency and packet-loss display, then server status | Data-center route, Wi-Fi, router position and background network use |
| Performance that worsens after extended play | Temperature trend and whether vents are obstructed | Cooling and airflow |
Keep a short log: game and mode, map or scene, FPS, frame-time behavior, ping, packet loss, temperatures, driver version and the exact error text. Retest after each change rather than applying several fixes at once.
Check requirements and files before chasing tweaks
Confirm the PC can run the game
Start with the current minimum and recommended requirements for the specific title. Epic Games says that if a computer does not meet Fortnite’s minimum requirements, later troubleshooting steps cannot remove that underlying limitation. Its Player Support article cautions: “Remember that your experience in Fortnite is entirely dependent on what type of hardware you’re using, and the steps below may only improve your performance slightly or not change anything at all.” Read the Fortnite low-frame-rate guidance alongside the game’s current requirements; requirements and clients can change.

Do not treat a result from one game as proof that every battle royale should perform the same way. Different engines, maps, DirectX versions and anti-cheat systems can stress different parts of a PC.
Verify files and launcher state
For Fortnite, Epic’s ordered troubleshooting path starts with checking requirements, then verifying game files and clearing the launcher cache. Only after those simpler checks does it suggest more disruptive options such as reinstalling. Follow the exact menu labels in the current Epic Games Launcher, because they can change between client releases. If verification reports damaged files, allow the repair to finish and retest before changing graphics settings.
Fix low FPS and sudden frame-rate drops
1. Update the graphics driver and reduce background load
Install the current driver for the GPU from its manufacturer, then reboot. Close browsers with video, recording software, RGB utilities, overlays and other applications that consume CPU, memory, GPU time or disk bandwidth. Epic’s Fortnite low-FPS instructions specifically call out driver currency and background programs.

2. Use an appropriate power mode
On a laptop connected to AC power, test Windows’ high-performance or best-performance power mode if the system is throttling. This can increase heat and reduce battery life, so switch back to a balanced mode for mobile use. Make sure the game is assigned to the dedicated high-performance GPU rather than an integrated graphics adapter.
3. Test graphics settings systematically
- Choose a repeatable location, such as the same training area or drop route.
- Record FPS and frame-time behavior for at least a short, repeatable run.
- Lower the settings that load the GPU most heavily, then retest.
- Change one setting group at a time so you can identify the useful change.
- Keep resolution and render scale consistent while comparing results.
Epic’s Fortnite graphics guidance describes keeping 3D resolution at 100% in its troubleshooting flow, then lowering quality settings to test stability. If a lower quality preset raises FPS but does not remove hitching, investigate frame pacing, memory and storage rather than continuing to lower image quality.

Fortnite Performance Mode examples are not guarantees
Epic’s Performance Mode support page gives illustrative 720p examples from a standard Squads match. On one laptop with an Intel i5-8265U, 8 GB of RAM and Intel UHD Graphics 620, the example changed from 24 FPS to 61 FPS. On another with an AMD A10-5745M APU, 6 GB of RAM and Radeon HD 8610G, it changed from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are Epic Games’ undated support examples accessed in 2026, not independent benchmarks or promises for your hardware.
| Example hardware | Mode and test condition | Illustrative change |
|---|---|---|
| Intel i5-8265U, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620 | Fortnite Performance Mode, 720p, standard Squads match | 24 FPS to 61 FPS |
| AMD A10-5745M APU, 6 GB RAM, Radeon HD 8610G | Fortnite Performance Mode, 720p, standard Squads match | 18 FPS to 45 FPS |
Epic notes that results depend on hardware and that its steps may have little or no effect. If the PC remains below requirements, an upgrade or different device is the underlying decision, not another preset.
Fix stutter and microstuttering when FPS looks high
A high average FPS can hide long frame-time spikes. A game may report 100 FPS while delivering occasional 100-millisecond frames that feel like a pause. Compare frame-time consistency, not just the average counter.
Test the graphics API only when the game supports the choice
EA Help says microstuttering can be related to optimization across DirectX versions or graphics-driver conflicts. Its PC graphics troubleshooting guide suggests trying a different DirectX setting and restarting, then checking patch notes before re-enabling a version. Treat this as a game-specific diagnostic experiment: do not apply a DirectX switch from one title to another or assume the newer API is always faster.
Check memory and storage pressure on older Fortnite PCs
For older systems using Fortnite Performance Mode, Epic says an SSD or 6 GB of RAM or higher can help the game fit in memory and reduce overall hitches and stutters. This advice is limited to that context. Check actual memory pressure, whether the drive is an SSD, motherboard and laptop compatibility, and the game’s current requirements before buying hardware. An SSD or RAM upgrade is not a universal cure for shader compilation, network delay or a driver fault.

Separate rendering hitches from network snaps
A local frame-time spike freezes the picture while your inputs and the camera may feel delayed. Rubberbanding is different: the character snaps backward or sideways because the server corrects movement. EA describes rubberbanding as usually associated with latency or a jittery connection, not graphics. Watch the FPS/frame-time display and network statistics at the same moment.

Resolve graphics errors, freezing and black screens
Fortnite-specific stability checks
Epic’s Fortnite graphics troubleshooting guide recommends checking requirements, lowering quality settings to test stability, updating drivers and trying Performance Mode if DirectX 12 is associated with crashes, freezing or black screens. On a laptop or multi-GPU system, confirm that Fortnite is using the dedicated high-performance GPU.
If settings repeatedly reset, Epic points to the game’s settings file and its read-only property. Follow the guide’s current file path and permissions instructions; do not delete configuration files without first recording your preferred settings.
Interpret tearing and persistent artifacts
EA defines tearing as multiple frames appearing on one display and suggests toggling V-Sync on as a possible remedy. V-Sync can add latency or cap performance, so compare input response and frame pacing after the change. Persistent unusual pixel colors are artifacting. Check GPU strain and temperature, test another game or display, and look for a repeatable pattern. One isolated artifact does not prove a failing GPU, but artifacts that persist across applications warrant hardware diagnosis.
Check temperature and airflow when faults appear late
If the game runs normally at first and visual problems begin only after extended play, Epic says overheating may be involved. Power down, inspect vents, remove dust from fans and airflow areas, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space. A compressed-air duster is appropriate only when inspection finds dust or obstruction; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions and keep the can upright. Cleaning can prevent thermal throttling, but it is not a guaranteed FPS increase.

Stop crashes and launch failures
Use an ordered Fortnite crash workflow
- Search the exact error message, preserving punctuation and any code.
- Verify that the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements.
- Verify game files in the launcher.
- Clear the launcher cache.
- Update the graphics driver and reboot.
- Try launching the Epic Games Launcher as administrator if Epic’s instructions call for it.
- Check background applications, drive errors and available storage.
- Only then consider reinstalling the launcher or game, installing to another drive, or following Epic’s narrowly scoped security-exclusion instructions.
- If the problem remains, escalate to Epic Support or the hardware manufacturer, depending on the evidence.
Do not interpret a security exclusion as a reason to turn off antivirus globally. Apply only the vendor’s documented steps and restore protections when the test is complete.
Return overclocked hardware to manufacturer defaults
PUBG Support’s general crashing and performance guide recommends current Windows and graphics drivers and says a clean driver or game installation can help when corruption is suspected. It also advises removing hardware overclocks during troubleshooting because operation outside manufacturer recommendations can contribute to file or memory corruption. This is an isolation step, not a claim that every overclock causes crashes.
Prepare useful escalation information
Record when the problem began, the full description, exact error text, DxDiag information and any relevant crash dump. PUBG Support specifically requests these details. Include the game version, driver version, whether defaults were restored, and which repeatable step triggers the crash. A complete report avoids repeating generic fixes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix high ping, packet loss and rubberbanding
Know what the numbers mean
EA defines ping (latency) as the time for game data to travel from your platform to a data center and back, measured in milliseconds. Packet loss is the number or percentage of packets that fail to make that round trip. In its Apex Legends guidance, EA says high ping and packet loss can harm play and gives these thresholds:
| EA Apex Legends guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Under 50 ms | Described by EA as particularly good |
| Under 100 ms | Described by EA as play running well |
| 50–150 ms | Named range in EA’s page guidance |
| Above 100 ms | EA says lag may begin |
These are EA’s Apex Legends guidance, not a universal standard for every game, server or route. Distance, congestion and server load can change the result.

Follow Apex Legends’ in-game sequence
- Enable Performance Display to view FPS, latency and packet loss.
- Select the nearest available data center.
- Check server status and official reports if all data centers look poor.
- Inspect the local connection only after ruling out a wider service problem.
- Reduce shared Wi-Fi use and pause downloads, streams, cloud sync and other background network activity.
- Improve wireless conditions by moving the router or reducing obstructions; test a wired connection when possible.
Use the EA Apex Legends ping, packet-loss and lag guide for the current menu path. Changing graphics quality cannot repair packet loss or a distant data center.
Use timing and scope to choose the next test
- Constant low FPS in one game: verify requirements, drivers, settings and background load.
- Low FPS in several games: inspect GPU/CPU utilization, temperatures, power mode and driver installation.
- Intermittent hitches with normal average FPS: inspect frame times, memory pressure, storage activity and API/driver compatibility.
- Problems only after 30–60 minutes: monitor temperatures, fan behavior and blocked vents.
- Snaps, delayed hit registration or high latency: inspect ping, packet loss, data center and Wi-Fi.
- Crashes after an update or hardware change: verify files, review the driver change and return overclocks to defaults.
- Persistent artifacts in multiple applications: stop stressing the GPU and arrange hardware diagnosis.
Change one factor, repeat the same match or test route, and write down the result. This makes it possible to tell a real improvement from normal match-to-match variation.
When an upgrade or repair is justified
Consider a compatible SSD or additional RAM only when an older Fortnite PC shows storage or memory pressure and meets the Performance Mode scenario described above. Confirm motherboard or laptop limits, installation requirements and the game’s current requirements before purchase. Do not buy a generic “gaming” upgrade to solve high ping, a corrupt installation or overheating caused by blocked airflow.
