If an indie horror game will not launch, stutters, shows a blank screen, or crashes, start with the game’s own system requirements and the symptom you can reproduce. Then try low-risk checks—such as verifying files, updating drivers, or lowering graphics settings—before changing security settings or buying hardware. These are general first steps, not fixes for every title; follow the game’s official support instructions when they differ.
Start with the game and the PC’s requirements
Compare your PC’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, and operating system with the requirements published for the specific game. A generic “gaming PC” label does not establish compatibility. Minimum requirements are not a promise of high frame rates; if your PC meets the minimum but not the recommended specifications, try a lower graphics preset before assuming a component is faulty. Steam and Capcom both include checking a game’s requirements among their troubleshooting steps (Steam performance guidance; Capcom troubleshooting guidance).
Identify whether the problem affects only one game or the whole computer. An error message, missing executable, or a repeatable crash in one title points toward game- or launcher-specific checks. A PC that restarts or displays a blue or gray stop screen needs PC-level diagnosis, not just changes to game settings.
If the game will not launch or reports a missing executable
- Read the exact error. Note the wording and when it appears. Do not assume that a fix for one game or launcher applies to another.
- Check security software’s quarantine or history. Antivirus software can mistakenly block or quarantine a game executable. Steam lists this as one possible cause of its “Missing Executable” error (Steam: Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)). Only consider an exclusion for a specific game file if you trust the game and the file; use the security vendor’s own instructions.
- Restart the PC, then verify or repair the game through its launcher. In Steam, use the game’s properties and installed-files options to verify the installation. Other launchers have their own repair or verification controls. Verification can replace missing or damaged game files; it will not resolve every cause of a launch failure.
- Check requirements, Windows updates, and graphics drivers. Use the game’s published requirements and the official update channels for your graphics-card maker and Microsoft. Restart after installing a driver if its instructions call for it.
- Try the game’s official support steps. Do not copy launch arguments, compatibility settings, or configuration edits from a different title unless the developer recommends them for yours.
If frame rate is low, choppy, or laggy
Reduce software and graphics load before considering a hardware purchase. Results depend on the game and PC, so change one setting at a time and check whether it improves play.

- Close resource-heavy applications you do not need while playing.
- Temporarily disable overlays or other nonessential background tools to see whether they are contributing to the problem.
- Lower the game’s resolution or graphics-quality preset. If performance improves, raise settings gradually until you find a workable balance.
- Check that the game has access to adequate memory and, on a laptop, connect the power adapter while playing.
- Compare your PC with the title’s minimum and recommended requirements. Meeting the minimum alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
Steam cautions that settings and machine configurations for third-party games vary, so there is no single graphics adjustment that applies to every title (Steam performance guidance). If the game’s own settings are unclear, ask its developer rather than making many unrelated changes at once.
If the screen flickers or stays blank
Try the game’s available graphics or display settings and check that the monitor is configured as expected. Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies shader cache as a possible source of graphics problems, but cache-clearing steps depend on the game or GPU. Use instructions from the relevant game or graphics vendor rather than deleting files based on a generic tip (Capcom troubleshooting guidance).

A blank screen can have more than one cause. If display adjustments do not help, record when it occurs—such as at launch, after a loading screen, or only after changing a setting—and include that detail in a support request.
If the game crashes
For a crash limited to one title, verify its files, install available Windows and graphics-driver updates, and close overlays or nonessential applications before trying again. Some developers publish additional remedies for a particular game, such as checking a required runtime or collecting configuration details. Larian’s startup-crash page is an example of title-specific guidance, not a universal prescription for indie horror games (Larian Studios: Crashing upon startup (PC)). Follow the instructions for your game rather than applying another developer’s API, redistributable, or configuration steps by default.

If the whole PC restarts or shows a blue or gray stop screen, treat that as a computer problem rather than an ordinary game crash. Steam’s guidance distinguishes these system-wide failures from game issues and points readers toward PC-level assistance (Steam: My computer crashes or stops at a blue or gray screen). If basic checks do not resolve a system-wide failure, contact the PC manufacturer or a qualified technician.
For a persistent problem isolated to one game, contact the game’s official support. Include the exact error, when it happens, your PC’s specifications, graphics-driver version, and any crash report or log the game provides. Reproducible details are more useful than a list of unrelated fixes you have tried.
