A crash limited to one title calls for game-specific checks; a missing, flickering, cropped, or incorrectly formatted image calls for display and signal-path checks. Changing video output settings can address compatibility or presentation problems, but it cannot guarantee better game-engine performance.
First, identify the kind of problem
- One game freezes, crashes, or stutters: begin with that game’s installation, updates, and save data. If only one title is affected, check its publisher’s support information for known issues.
- Several games have problems: install the latest PS5 system software. If multiple titles continue to fail after game-specific checks, contact PlayStation Repairs.
- The picture is missing, pixelated, flickering, at the wrong resolution, or has incorrect HDR or geometry: troubleshoot the display, HDMI connection, and PS5 video output settings.
PS5 video output depends on the connected screen and every device in the HDMI path. A receiver, soundbar, or capture device can affect which signal reaches the display.
Fix game freezes or crashes in one title
- Make sure the game is fully installed. A download that has not finished can prevent the game from working correctly.
- Check for a game update. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
- Update PS5 system software. Install the latest available system software before testing the game again.
- Test without the existing save. If the game still crashes, start from the beginning without using the existing save, if the game allows it. If the new start works, the existing save may be involved; avoid overwriting it until you understand the game’s save options.
- Delete and reinstall the game. If the problem persists, reinstall it and test again.
For a disc game, check the disc for dirt or damage. Clean it with a clean, soft cloth, then try another disc. If other games work and the fault follows one disc, that points toward a disc-specific issue rather than a general console problem. PlayStation’s game freezes or crashes guidance covers these checks and escalation.
Resetting the console is a later, destructive step—not an early game-crash fix. Back up data first: a reset erases data stored on the console. If only one online or gameplay issue remains, check with the game’s publisher. For problems spanning multiple games, or persistent faults after troubleshooting, use PlayStation Repairs.

Fix a missing, pixelated, or wrong-resolution picture
- Check the basic HDMI connection. Make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends and the TV or monitor is on the correct HDMI input. Try another cable or port if available.
- Test a direct connection. Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the display, bypassing a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Restart the signal path. Turn off the PS5 and display, unplug both from power, wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and test again.
- Check the display. Install any available TV or monitor firmware update. Consult its manual for settings required to accept high-resolution signals.
- Inspect the PS5’s detected output. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. With Resolution set to Automatic, PS5 detects the display’s capabilities and selects the highest supported resolution. Check Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information to see reported resolution, VRR, and HDR support.
If there is still no image, follow PlayStation’s no image output from your PS5 console troubleshooting. Persistent problems after checking the signal path may need PlayStation Repairs.
PS5 4K 120 Hz troubleshooting
Check the whole signal chain before assuming the console is faulty. A screen may support 4K and 120 Hz separately without accepting that combination through every HDMI port or setting.

- Confirm display support. Check the TV or monitor manual for 4K at 120 Hz and identify which HDMI port supports it. Some TVs require enabling the port’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode in their settings.
- Update display firmware. Install the current firmware for the TV or monitor.
- Connect directly. Temporarily remove a receiver, soundbar, or other intermediary from the HDMI path.
- Check the cable. Start with the cable included with the PS5. If replacing it, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz; a cable replacement is not a universal fix for every display issue.
- Check PS5 output settings. Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, try Resolution at Automatic or 2160p, and set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
For further steps, see PlayStation’s 4K/120 Hz resolution guidance. Sony recommends the supplied PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Whether a setup reaches that mode still depends on the display, port, firmware, cable, and any devices between the console and screen.
Diagnose flicker, 120 Hz problems, or uneven presentation
Try a lower Video Transfer Rate for flicker
If the screen flickers at 4K, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and test -1, then -2 if needed. These settings are diagnostic trade-offs: they limit some supported output combinations, including 4K/120 Hz and other high-bandwidth formats. They are not a general image-quality upgrade.

Test 120 Hz Output
Enable 120 Hz Output only if the display and game support it. If a 120 Hz game has video output problems on a monitor or other display, turn 120 Hz Output off and test again. The setting changes the output mode; it does not make an unsupported screen or game support 120 Hz.
Use VRR only where it is supported
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) dynamically syncs a compatible display’s refresh rate to PS5 output. It can reduce artifacts such as screen tearing and frame-pacing irregularities, but results vary by screen, game, and selected visual mode. If a title behaves unexpectedly with VRR, try disabling Apply to Unsupported Games. Sony’s VRR feature description explains the technology; it is not a promise of improved performance in every game.

Fix No HDR or an HDR picture that looks wrong
First confirm that the connected screen supports HDR. Then go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and choose the behavior that suits your setup:
- On When Supported: HDR is used for supported content; non-HDR games and apps remain in SDR.
- Always On: PS5 converts SDR content to HDR output as well, which can make the picture look different. It does not mean the original game was authored in HDR.
Use Adjust HDR to tune brightness. No single setting is best for every display or room; PlayStation notes that available image quality depends on the home entertainment setup. See the official PS5 audio and video settings guidance for the current menu instructions.

Adjust display area if the picture is cropped or bordered
For cropped edges or a black border around the image, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen instructions. This adjusts the visible image area; it does not change a game’s resolution or performance.
