Most PS5 Pro display failures come from the HDMI chain or an output mode the television cannot accept. Work from the outside in: select the correct TV input, connect the console directly, test another port and cable, verify the TV’s firmware and capabilities, then adjust PS5 Pro video settings. For a blank screen, Safe Mode’s Change Video Output can restore a usable signal. For flicker, test Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. Cache clearing can address system-level slowdowns, but Sony does not promise it will raise the frame rate of a particular game.
Start with the HDMI path, not advanced settings
A PS5 Pro signal travels through several possible failure points: the console’s HDMI socket, the cable, the television or monitor input, and any receiver, sound bar, switch, or capture device in between. A setting that is correct for one display can produce a black screen or a fallback to 1080p on another. Change one variable at a time so you know which step changed the result.

- Turn on both the console and display, and select the exact HDMI input used by the PS5 Pro.
- Reseat both HDMI plugs firmly. Inspect the connectors for damage or looseness.
- Temporarily remove receivers, sound bars, home-theater equipment, HDMI switches, and capture devices. Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display.
- Try another HDMI input on the display. Some sets reserve their highest bandwidth for one or two labeled ports.
- Install the display’s current firmware and consult its manual for any enhanced-format, deep-color, or high-bandwidth HDMI option.
Sony’s picture-and-sound guidance covers these connection checks and recommends testing another cable and port before escalating the problem. PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting guide is the reference for the general PS5 procedure, which applies to the Pro where the same menus are present.

Fix a PS5 Pro with no image or an intermittent signal
1. Verify the simple conditions
- Confirm that the display is powered on and showing the HDMI input connected to the console.
- Power off the display, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and select the input again.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, then test a different HDMI port.
- Remove every intermediary device and connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display.
- Try a known-working HDMI cable. The cable supplied with the console is Sony’s recommended baseline for high-performance features; an older cable may work for lower-bandwidth modes but is not a reliable 4K/120 Hz test.
2. Recover the picture with Safe Mode
If the display remains blank, use Safe Mode to force a compatible output mode:

- Turn the console off by holding the power button for three seconds.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Change Video Output, then choose Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode, depending on the symptom.
After the picture returns, reconnect devices one at a time and restore higher-resolution features individually. If Safe Mode cannot produce an image even with a direct connection and a known-good cable, use PlayStation’s repair service rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. The complete Safe Mode menu and its data-loss warnings are documented in Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
Restore 4K at 120 Hz when the Pro falls back to 1080p
4K/120 Hz is a chain requirement, not a console-only feature. The display must accept 3840×2160 at 120 Hz, the chosen HDMI port must have that bandwidth, the TV may require a manufacturer-specific enhanced-input setting, and the game must support a 120 Hz mode. A television that supports 120 Hz only at 1080p will correctly fall back to that lower resolution.
Check the display and connection
- Look up the display’s actual 4K/120 Hz capability and install its latest firmware.
- Use the HDMI input identified by the manufacturer for 4K/120 Hz or enhanced bandwidth.
- Enable the TV-side HDMI option required for high-bandwidth or deep-color signals.
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to that input while testing; receivers and sound bars can restrict the negotiated format.
- Use the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable explicitly rated for 4K/120 Hz. Do not replace a working cable merely because it is not new.
Check the PS5 Pro output menu
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic while diagnosing a missing 4K/120 Hz signal.
- Review the information shown for the connected HDMI device, including its reported resolution, VRR support, and HDR capabilities.
Restart the game after changing output settings. Sony describes 120 Hz output as dependent on a compatible game and display, so the console menu alone cannot guarantee 4K/120 Hz in every title. The supported combinations and requirements are listed in PlayStation’s resolution guide.
Stop screen flicker at high bandwidth
Flicker usually indicates that the display and HDMI path are struggling with the selected transfer mode rather than that the panel is permanently damaged. First repeat the direct-connection and port checks above, then test the PS5 Pro’s transfer-rate limits.

- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate.
- Change the value from Automatic to -1.
- If flicker continues, test -2.
- Play the same content for several minutes after each change so you can identify whether the setting helped.
Sony states that selecting -1 or -2 limits output and may improve picture quality. These are compatibility settings, not universal image-quality upgrades: both settings limit 4K/120 Hz, and they restrict some 4K 50/60 Hz color formats. The formats retained at -1 differ from those retained at -2, so note which feature you are willing to give up.
If the problem appears only when 120 Hz is active, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and turn off 120 Hz Output as a diagnostic. A stable 60 Hz picture confirms that the fault is associated with the high-refresh mode or its signal path; it does not prove the console is defective.
Set HDR, VRR, and ALLM without unexpected behavior
HDR output
In the Video Output screen, compare the capabilities reported for the connected display with the mode you selected. Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output, while On When Supported leaves non-HDR material in SDR. If standard games or streaming menus look washed out, switch to On When Supported and compare the same scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVariable Refresh Rate
VRR requires support from both the display and the game, and Sony notes that results vary by television. If VRR causes instability or an unexpected brightness change, disable it temporarily and retest. The Apply to Unsupported Games option can force VRR behavior where a title was not designed for it; turn that option off when a game behaves strangely.

Automatic Low Latency Mode
ALLM depends on current system software. VRR can still trigger low-latency behavior even when the ALLM setting is off. To fully disable ALLM-related behavior, turn off VRR as well, then retest the game or display mode.
Make only one change between tests. Combining HDR, VRR, 120 Hz, and transfer-rate changes makes it impossible to identify which feature is causing the fault.
When a PS4 game looks unchanged on PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro setting Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games applies to the CFI-7000 model group covered by Sony’s Pro guidance. The connected screen must support 4K or 1440p. If a compatible PS4 title does not show the expected enhancement:
- Open Settings > Screen and Video and locate Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games.
- Make sure the option is enabled and that the display is reporting a supported 4K or 1440p mode.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing the option.
- If gameplay becomes unstable or behaves unexpectedly, turn the enhancement off and test the title again.
This feature does not convert every PS4 game into a native 4K presentation. Its availability and behavior depend on the title and the display mode negotiated by the console.

Address system slowdowns and general performance drops
Use Safe Mode maintenance tools for system-level symptoms such as sluggish menus, features that stop responding, or a broad performance drop across the console interface. They are not guaranteed fixes for a game’s programmed frame-rate limit or a title-specific performance bug.
Clear the system software cache
- Turn the PS5 Pro off completely.
- Enter Safe Mode using the two-beep procedure described earlier.
- Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose Clear System Software Cache.
Sony identifies Clear System Software Cache for system-feature issues or performance drops. The operation is intended to remove temporary system data and does not provide a promise of higher frame rates in a specific game.
Rebuild the database when content indexing is suspect
From the same Safe Mode menu, choose Rebuild Database when the system has trouble organizing content or menus remain unusually slow after a cache clear. The console scans the storage and creates a new content database. Allow the process to finish without unplugging the console.

Avoid destructive resets as a first step
Safe Mode options that reset the console or reinstall system software can delete user data. Back up saves and confirm that less-invasive connection, output, and cache checks have failed before considering them. If the issue is limited to one game, check that game’s updates and support information rather than erasing the entire console.

Understand PS5 Pro 8K output limits
8K output is available only on consoles in Sony’s CFI-7000 model group and requires a display that supports 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression (DSC). Select games can support 8K; the console’s system interface and media applications are listed up to 4K, so an 8K television will not make every screen or game render at 8K.
Choosing 8K also changes feature availability. VRR is disabled in 8K mode. Certain simultaneous combinations of Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting, and Remote Play are unavailable or constrained. If PlayStation VR2 is connected while the television is set to 8K, the headset cannot display video. Switch back to a supported 4K mode before using those functions.
Use this comparison when choosing a setup
| Check | What to verify | Typical corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Display capability | Native resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, and ALLM support | Update firmware, select a supported mode, or disable the feature that exceeds the display’s capability |
| HDMI input | Whether the chosen port accepts the target bandwidth | Move the cable to the manufacturer-designated 4K/120 Hz or enhanced port |
| Cable | Included cable or Ultra High-Speed rating for 4K/120 Hz | Swap in a known-good cable only after direct-connection testing |
| Signal path | Receivers, sound bars, switches, and capture devices between console and screen | Bypass every intermediary while diagnosing |
| Console output | Resolution, Video Transfer Rate, 120 Hz Output, HDR, VRR, and ALLM settings | Return diagnostic values to Automatic, then change one feature at a time |
| Game support | Whether the title supports 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, or 8K | Test another supported title; do not assume a console-wide fault |
Quick symptom-to-action guide
- Completely blank screen: verify input, reseat the cable, connect directly, try another port and cable, then use Safe Mode > Change Video Output.
- 1080p/120 Hz instead of 4K/120 Hz: confirm the display and port support 4K at 120 Hz, enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI option, use a suitable cable, and set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
- Flicker only at 4K or 120 Hz: test Video Transfer Rate -1 and -2, or disable 120 Hz Output to isolate the high-bandwidth mode.
- Washed-out non-HDR content: use HDR On When Supported instead of Always On.
- Unexpected VRR behavior: disable Apply to Unsupported Games, then test with VRR off.
- Slow menus or broad system drops: enter Safe Mode and clear the system software cache; rebuild the database if content indexing remains problematic.
- One game alone has low frame rates: do not assume cache clearing will fix it; verify the game’s own performance modes and updates.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the PS5 Pro produces no picture through a direct connection with a known-good cable and a second compatible display, or if the HDMI socket is visibly damaged, further setting changes are unlikely to help. Record which ports, cables, displays, and Safe Mode options you tested and provide that information to PlayStation Support. Sony’s Pro troubleshooting index covers display, flicker, 8K, and TV-connection categories, but it does not publish a detailed Pro-specific overheating procedure; do not improvise internal repairs or treat generic temperature advice as a confirmed diagnosis.
