Start with the problem your PS5 is showing: for first-time setup or a blank screen, check the console’s connections and model-specific instructions; for Wi-Fi or PlayStation Network errors, check the network and service status; for a failed update, retry it before using a USB drive. If the console cannot reach the home screen, use Safe Mode. Avoid reset or reinstall options until you have backed up anything you want to keep: those choices erase console data.

First-time setup or no picture

PS5 setup includes pairing the controller, choosing a language, connecting to the internet, setting display options, choosing Rest Mode options, and accepting the user agreement. Before powering on, connect HDMI and power, and attach the base or feet specified for your model. Sony’s getting-started guide includes model-specific setup instructions; check your model when prompted.

If the console powers on but there is no image, use the display troubleshooting linked from Sony’s getting-started page rather than assuming the console has failed. Check that the HDMI connection is secure and that the display is set to the correct input. Avoid changing unrelated network or system settings to troubleshoot a display problem.

PS5 won’t connect to Wi-Fi or the internet

First confirm the Wi-Fi network name (SSID), password, and security method, then check PlayStation service status for an outage. To configure the connection from the home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the network, and choose Connect. Enter its password if asked. For a wired connection, choose Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Sony’s internet setup guide describes both methods.

If Wi-Fi is weak or intermittent, move the console or router to improve the signal, or test a wired LAN connection if available. PS5 supports IPv6 but not IPv6-only internet connections: the router must also support IPv4.

On a PS5 Pro (model CFI-7000), if both the console and router support Multi-Link Operation, you can test the Multi Linking Operation setting on and off. Other advanced network settings include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy. Sony advises asking your internet provider or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with them; changing these settings is not a routine first step.

PlayStation Network error NW-102650-4

For this specific error, Sony recommends checking service status, restarting the PS5, trying a wired connection where possible, improving wireless placement, restarting the modem and router, and updating router firmware. Follow the NW-102650-4 troubleshooting instructions in that order before considering advanced network changes.

Sony’s page also lists port and static-IP suggestions for this error. These are not general requirements for every PS5 connection problem. If you do not know how to configure ports or a static IP, ask your ISP or network administrator before making changes.

PS5 update is stuck or won’t download

If the console reaches the home screen

Retry the update before switching to a manual installation: open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, select View Error Info, then choose Try Again. You can also check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings for system software update options. Sony’s system software instructions cover the update process.

Manual update using a computer and USB drive

If repeated downloads fail, use Sony’s official update file and prescribed process. You need a computer and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony’s procedure calls for approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file.

  1. On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then a folder inside it named UPDATE.
  2. Download the official update file from Sony’s PS5 system software page and save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase folder and file names if the console does not recognize the file.
  3. Safely eject the USB drive, then connect it to the PS5.
  4. Start the console in Safe Mode: turn it off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button if prompted.
  5. Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device and follow the on-screen instructions.

Use only the official Sony file and the specified process. Do not turn off the console or remove power during installation: Sony warns that interrupting an installation can damage the console. The Safe Mode update steps are also documented in Sony’s manual update guide.

PS5 won’t start, or you can’t reach the home screen

Safe Mode provides recovery options when the normal interface is unavailable. Turn the console off, then press and hold the power button until the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button if asked. From Safe Mode, you can select Update System Software and install an update from the internet or USB. Use the same official USB file and folder structure described above if an online update is not working.

If the system software must be reinstalled, download Sony’s reinstallation file and follow its Safe Mode instructions. Sony says this file needs approximately 1.2 GB of free space. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) removes the system software and deletes all console data, so treat it as a last resort and back up data first if possible. Do not interrupt the installation.

Safe Mode keeps appearing, or you need to repair the system

Check the power and connection cables, then follow Sony’s power-cycle steps. If the PS5 repeatedly starts in Safe Mode, Sony instructs users to turn it off, unplug it for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again. If the problem continues, choose Clear System Software Cache in Safe Mode. For persistent startup or Safe Mode problems, use Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting and official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic flow.

What Safe Mode options do—and which erase data

Option Effect Data impact
Repair Console Storage Checks and repairs console storage problems. Does not erase data, according to Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
Update System Software Updates the system software, including from USB. Not described as a data-erasing reset.
Restore Default Settings Restores default settings. Does not delete console storage content, according to Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database Clears cached data or rebuilds the database to address some feature or performance problems. Sony’s Safe Mode guide does not describe these options as deleting user data.
Reset PS5 Resets the console. Deletes user data.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Removes system software and reinstalls it. Deletes user data and system software.

Back up anything you want to keep before choosing either reset option. Sony’s Safe Mode guide explains the options and their effects; menu availability and instructions can vary by model.
